Football Recruiting.. Question JD.

  • Lot of guys on the radar from Ohio, is it me or more than ever?

My question is, what is the blueprint for recruiting at UK? I ustto think it was get the best the state has to offer, and then look for needs and hidden gems that UK could transform into position players.

Last year, we took a little of everything. True position players, the best Kentucky had, and some Atheletes. We will never have our pick of the litter but what really is UK's blueprint for success? The reason I ask is because I feel like this year we are trying to sell Big 10 kids on playing in the SEC.

  • The Ohio connection is from Cassity I believe. Hopefully he's able to land some good ones from out of Big 10 country. Otherwise its still the same old same old in the south.

I think it varies from year to year. This year seems to be much more need-based than others, especially at hybrid DE-LB, hybrid S-LB and CB. WR seems to be top priority on O. You're not hearing many QBs or RBs right now, and only a few OL.

They've wanted to get back into Ohio for years, but didn't have the right assistants to do it. Now with Minter and Cassity, that has changed.

  • You can bet the kids in OH are very well informed about Towles, and I'm sure he is mentioned to the kids in OH esp. WR

Didn't help with the Stafford/Stafford kid out of Cincy Taft in the 2012 class.

The strange one for me is Ky - 6 & Tn - 5. This years instate class is deep in the Lou. area and most don't have interest in UK. IMO we'll end up with only 3 instate commits and we already have one. I also love the fact we're going hard after Fla., Ga. & OH kids.

Only one Sc. offer? That's odd but I guess with USC & Clemson now having stronger programs the coaching staff looked elsewhere.

Lovin that FL-51 even better. Hell It wouldn't hurt my feelings if signed 90-95% of our class from that state every year!

A buddy of mine says he'd be fine if UK never recruited KY. Obviously, you can't completely ignore the state, but his point is that you can generally find guys on every corner in GA and FLA who can do about anything the top kids in KY can do.

Where the in-state recruiting matters most is when you get a guy from KY who REALLY wants to be a Cat. Guys like Tamme or Woodson. That extra heart goes a long way.

  • The guys I have seen standing on "corners" in Georgia and Florida were usally pimping out some Lady Marmalade.

  • I love that we are hitting Ohio, Florida, and Georgia hard but hope that when we have a new assistant come in that he has good ties to TX also. With TAMU now a part of the SEC we should be able to hit TX hard and lure a good 5-6 kids from the Longhorn State every year too.

  • What I would really like to see is for UK to reach the level where that can go national to get players for need positions. That is when you know you have arrived on the recruiting front.

  • I don't know it for fact, but I suspect that academics is much stronger in OH than it is in FLA. Especially since I saw a report that FLA is dumbing down their HS tests because a huge number (seems like 90%) can't pass with the tests the way they are. Does no good to get 4*s to commit if they can't qualify.
