Football Recruiting: What's left?

With 20 players already on UK’s commitment list, Joker Phillips & Co. have almost wrapped up recruiting efforts for the 2012 class before the 2011 season even kicks off.

  • This is great news if you are preserving the 11th best recruiting class in the SEC. The good news is we have better players and good depth. The bad news is our unrated, 2* and 3* recruits with one or two 4* players will only keep the 6-6 and occasional 7-5 record going and our continued loop of Nashville, Memphis and Birmingham in the post season.

Steve Spurrier languished the same way for a number of years at South Carolina with the cries of "he's too told" or "he's lost it." Then he got lucky with Ashon Jeffries and an adequate if not off center quarterback. He advanced to 7-5 consistently. But, then the football gods smiled down on the "ole ball coach" and an all world running back named Marcus Lattimore signed with the Cocks. You know the story. Outside of a drone attack in Lexington last year, the ole ball coach rode the swift legs of his freshman running back to the SEC east title. Never mind the humiliation of Auburn in the championship game. The too old to coach Spurrier is now up to his ears in 3* and 4* recruits for 2012.

Pray Josh Clemons parts the sea of Gators, Dawgs, Tigers et al and leads the Cats and our ever devoted Blue Nation down the Glory Road. It's been so long I can't imagine how that would feel.

  • The OBC coaches in one of the top three talent-per-capita states in the country. UK doesn't have that benefit, and never will. The coaches have to project 3s for the most part and hope they can land a 4 here and there moving forward.

  • Great breakdown, Jeff. Looks like the staff can be very picky with their last several scholarships. With all of the attrition, I'd have to think they will sign 24-25. Maybe a WR, a RB, 2 LB, a DB, and a speed rush DE to complete the class. Really hope Ross does whatever he needs to do to qualify academically.

The last I heard, the number was around 22. They could probably hit 25 with normal attrition. It will be close.

  • They better sign 25. No way attrition doesn't knock out three more players between now and next year.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised, heck I even expect, about ten more commitments. Saying we sign 25 we have five to go there. We will lose a couple/few to decommits, we will lose a couple to academics, and last year Joker pulled a few so you can easily see five more opening up with those three categories taken into account. I said it, ten more commitments for the 2012 class.

  • When I look at the WR depth chart I see the need for 2 more guys in this class. Out of the 5 we signed last year only 3 stuck. Once the JR class we have now is gone, the wr position is gonna need a few more bodies. Here is what they will have. Adams, Collins, Cunningham, Robinson, Sweat, and hopefully two more signees this year and a few the year after. I think Blaylock goes to the D. IMO WR and LB are the two biggest needs they have.

Wrong......TOBC got to the SEC title game because UGA & Florida slid backwards. In a "normal" year, a 5-3 SEC record will see you in 3rd place in the East. It's interesting that TOBC still garners the attention he does from some in spite of the fact that he's never lost less than 5 games in a season since he's been at Carolina. For a man of his accolades and coaching in a state that produces a lot of major talent, he's been an underachiever for his career there, and his handling of the Garcia situation speaks volumes about his failure in QB recruiting.

  • I still say you take a guy like Fromang if he commits. His offer sheet is too good to pass up. Plus, most of the o-linemen taken already project to line interior from what I understand. We need some more tackles.

    BlueRaider22

  • I say you work on 2 more linebackers and a runningback then you work on signing a couple of guys that are really special at whatever position they play. Players like Mckay, Fromang, Washington, etc

  • Good stuff, Jeff, thanks. A couple of things - keep an eye on Jordan Washington (DL) from Bob Sphire's school in GA. He's supposed to be setting up a visit to UK. Also, Blake Tibbs is rumored to be commiting to UGA very soon (i.e., today).

    DACats86

  • Also, what about JaMichael Winston - is UK completely out ofthe running there? His teammate Darius Philon is supposed to be committing this Thursday between Alabama, UK and Mississippi State (pretty easy to guess this one).

At linebacker, there is also Tyler Drake and Tre Banks.

  • Great breakdown JDrum! The staff has done an excellent job recruiting for the 2012 class. They've addressed their most pressing needs at OL and DL as well as added great athletes that project on either side of the ball. I don't worry about stars. UK is not going to land 4-star kids unless they're homegrown. Joker and Co. have to project, put them with Rock, and coach them up. It's a formula that's worked and will continue to work. While the 'Cats may not be landing the blue-chip talent the rest of the SEC is landing, they are getting higher rated 3-star kids that possess SEC talent and skill. That will show this fall and beyond.

  • Overall, we've addressed our needs for the most part. However, this class is fairly weak and will finish 11th or 12th in the SEC. That's not going to get it done.

  • Look people, we may get ranked 11th in the SEC on paper, but it doesn't mean that we can't improve and compete.

Imagine if we were in a NASCAR race: You can finish 2nd 3 minutes behind the leader like we have in the past.....or you can finish 1.2 seconds behind the leader. You're still 2nd, but you are improving and are starting to compete.

It does not mean that you will start dominating. Nor does it mean that you will start spitting out 4-4, 5-3 conference records left and right. It doesn't work that way.

You can try to spin it however you want, but UK is stuck in neutral, and even took a step back last season. Last years class was a slow step in the right direction, but this class is pretty weak. UK must improve recruiting if they want to do more than compete every once in a blue moon.

Yeah. It sounds like Tibbs is all but a Dawg after that offer rolled in.

I've heard it depends on how he looks the first 3-4 weeks of the season. A lot of people down there think he'll land an offer from one of the in-state powers if he plays well. Catch 22 for UK. They want a great prospect, but if he shows too much potential, it may knock the Cats out of it.

What do you base that on? They're actually pretty similar, and follow the staff's blueprint for how they have to operate. If you like one, you should like the other.

I actually like this class much better than the last one. Of course, I'm one of those guys that would be happy if we only recruited DL and OL...
