Money isn't everything. Ask John Calipari why he is at Kentucky. It is not because we are throwing 5 million dollars a year in his face. It is because he can do bigger things here than he could anywhere else and be remembered as the greatest of his time. Players want to play for Cal and Kentucky. It's the pinnacle!

Yep. Where else can you put on a $300K laser light show for an audience that gets in for free & then complain you don't have the resources to improve the facilities for the #1 revenue producer?

Or the fact that UK basketball has the history of Alabama football and UK football has the history of Alabama basketball. Money isn't everything. Ask John Calipari why he is at Kentucky. I agree that it can be successful but it is going to take a young guy that will build it and sustain it for a long, long time or an older coach to come in and make us truly competitive. Not Music City bowl competitive, but USC jr. competitive and when he retires then go get your Petrino type to come and win an SEC crown.

I guess what I'm saying is Rome wasn't built in a day. We are on step 1 of a 10 step program to the top.

Everything you just said is what is wrong with UK football. Fans making excuse after excuse. Then the AD follows what the fans expect. Damn it! Hire the best and hire them right now! And yes 5-6 million will get them here! So tired of this sissy crap!frustrated

  • My top 5
    1 Petrino
    2 Tubberville
    3 Cutliffe
    4 Dykes
    5 Fulmer

The idea I like about Petrino or Fulmer is that they are strong enough personalities that they won't LET the administration not support football.
I feel like sonny dykes or Cutliffe wouldn't be able to rattle the cage enough.

Out if those 5 who is the best recruiter?
Do kids even know who Fulmer is?

Really surprised that wku head coach Taggert isn't getting mentioned more.

The whole "WKU red is the new blue" thing kinda rubbed some people the wrong way, plus he is a WKU guy through and through. Played there, coaches there now, and would probably like to try to turn it into a respectable football program. It's not unreasonable.

Then tell me why are they not here? We've been through this before. You want a sexy hire? You gotta be a sexy school. People aren't beating down the door to come coach at a school with a very small in state talent pool and poor facilities. Mitch went after the "big" hire before Brooks and failed. My analogy of Alabama basketball was because they went after the big hire in Basketball and pretty much said money is no object. Couldn't get anyone. They settled on up and comer Anthony grant.

LOL @ you if you think Mitch Barnhart is making his decision based on our expectations. I'm sure his expectations far exceed ours but you get what you can get. I'm sure he is working back channels to see if the "big" names everyone wants to throw all this money at are interested but those are the guys that are waiting on other jobs to shake out. Hell one of the names that people are scoffing at in Tubberville isn't even a given and is said to be waiting to see what Arkansas is doing first.

They are not excuses, it is not sissy crapgrumble that is simply the realistic outlook.

  • You have tennessee auburn arkansas texas kentucky all going after a big name coach who do you think that coach is gonna go with hmmmmmmmmmmmmm let me think NOT UK.

  • If we get a coach the caliber of a tommy t il be giddy. And thats not me having low expectations the guy is a proven winner what more is there.

  • My concern is the amount of coaching openings in the SEC this off season my reduce the talent pool at HC.
Auburn (Petrino), Arkansas (Tuberville), Tennessee (Gruden), & Kentucky (????) (gonna have to be Fulmer or a Dykes type) I'm guessing that's the #1's on the wish list.

    UK141240

  • I would be ok with fulmer or dykes honestly id take fulmer because he knows the beast the sec is. Thats one thing about joker i dont think he truly knows what top notch talent looks like i want a coach who has coached elite talent fulmer has.

    quagmire

  • Those of you thinking gruden is going to utk need to stop reading clay Travis' fantasy land twitter feed. He doesn't know his butthole from applebutter when it comes to who the vols will hire.

    hoptownukfan

  • I don't know why we would reach down and pick up a past-their-prime retread that was fired from their last SEC coaching job with resources greater than what we could offer. It makes much more sense to me to induce a younger, exciting, up and coming coach like Dykes or Hudspeth to come here and build a program. Granted they may not make a successful jump but on the other hand their upward potential has likely not yet been met, whereas with the likes of a Fulmer or a Cutcliff you already know what the ceiling is and it will never be met with either of them here.

one b or two, he won't be here when all is said and done so it won't matter anyway. I'd say Dykes is going to be the guy. At least I hope so.

  • I don't think people are giving Fulmer enough credit. The guy has an unbelievable record in the SEC. He won a BCS natoinal championship, scared Spurrier to death, and beat Alabama 11 times. This guy knows how to manage a program. I think if we were to give him a big budget to hire his staff that could be really exciting. Tuberville would be very good also. A young Dykes would be good with the right staff.

I agree. The only reticence I have is that he has been out of the game for a while and has gotten old.

This site mentions two other coaches on UK's short list... Phil Fulmer and Sonny Dykes

Yuk to both of these-let's at least shoot for something other than retreads-

Define "right staff??" Those who know which palms to grease?? Is this what the big budget is for?? If he wasn't winning in the end at UT what makes you think he could make a dent @ UK?? And boy, wouldn't his hiring whip up the faithful!!

    NACat5463578

  • So completly ignore his whole career b/c of a couple bad season for there standards anyways. What coach out there are we gonna get that excites this fanbase other than petrino. Im sorry but hed prob go back to arkansas before he came here unless auburn texas and tennessee both dont hire him. And arkansas was not very talented this year a year after hes gone but nobody talks about that.

It is a myth that he wasn't winning at "the end" at UT. Go check his record. His second to last year he won 10 games and tied for the Eastern Division Title. The year before that he won 9 games. Three out of his last 6 years he won 10 games and in each of those 3 season he won out right or tied for the eastern division championship. The other three years he won 9 and then 5 twice. The fist 5 win season was surrounded by 10 wins, 10 wins, and 9 wins. The last 5 win season was prececed by 9 wins and 10 wins. Bottom line is that he was still winning a ton of games.

So, you are talking about bringing in a Hall of Famer who owned most of the SEC for a decade and a half. Yes, that should excite the fanbase. He is five years younger than Spurrier and ten years younger than Snyder at KSU and both of those guys are doing pretty well. The right staff btw is a combination of big time recruiters and big time coaches.

    usa1000

  • Well played sir. Most of our fans are deadset on one guy as the savior and if we cant get him there going to hate whoever the coach is Truth be told alot of them probably are 19 20 yrs old

    quagmire

  • Everyone wants a hire that will create excitement but those "sexy" hires don't always turn out the way people envision. Barring the ability to throw big money at someone and get them to skip over potential offers from better programs, I don't get the antipathy for Cutcliffe. The guy had a winning record in the SEC and took over a Duke program that had gone 13-90 in the nine years before Cutcliffe arrived (including a 22 game losing streak). They are headed to a bowl game this year.

He was fired at Ole Miss after a losing season (his only one at the school) and still finished 3-5 in the SEC that year. The year before that he took Ole Miss to the Cotton Bowl and a final ranking of No. 13 in the country. What has Ole Miss done since then?

And he didn't jump at the Tennessee job to replace Kiffin. Someone like Petrino would be gone without thinking twice.

I'd take Cutcliffe and not look back.

  • I like Fulmer. Say what you want but the guy has never lost at Commonwealth Stadium.
Seriously, he didn't forget how to coach. And Phil certainly brings the ability to recruit the south. Do the kids remember him? Who knows? But we get a good solid coach from another region of the country they might not know him either.
I bet he feels he has something to prove and he would be great at evaluating his assistant coaches as well.

If we hired Phil, I wonder if we'd have the first football/basketball duo in history who'd never lost on their home turf.
