TIFWIW, but I spoke to my father-in-law on Wednesday who is a Bama alum and booster. Also a personal friend of a high-profile agent that works with BCS coaches.

He said to me "what would you think about Mullen as your next coach?" I replied, "no way he'd come here." He said, "well, maybe not but his name has been mentioned in connection with a possible search."

What this tells me, and I have no reason to believe that Mullen's name was not discussed, is that we have no clue what we're looking for.

I've heard Mullen to Aubie, but not UK

  • I think Mullen would be a good choice..I would like that..He has done a great job at State..

I question whether Mullen is a big enough name for them at the end of the day. You know Auburn has a ridiculous entitlement mentality and with a recent NC on top of that they will go for a home run.

If the administration makes the decision and not the boosters I could see it though.

An even better question might be, if UK a big enough next step for Mullen? I'd say no.

  • My only disagreement with your statement is KY is elite in basketball, and no where near elite in SEC football. We don't have a lot of homegrown talent in KY in football and when we do they almost always spurn us for somewhere else. Now if you hire a good coach who has recruiting connections and we start at least being competitive and wins some games in the SEC we might get a 4 star recruit from time to time.

Currently comparing the Basketball team to the Football team is like comparing Dom Perignon to a Fall City

Maybe Mullen was the good coach / bad school dude who was unhappy as mentioned by Feinbaum?

  • Okay my bestfriend/brother is a huge State fan, Alumnus, an big time booster, at MSU. He said Leo Seal past away and left MSU something like 100 Million dollars for sports so if Mullen leaves it want be for money, they have gave him everything he has ask for in Starkvagas. He also said he couldn't go to AU because of some clause in his contact "Noncompetable" I think is what he called it.

Just a little info i i was told take it for what its worth

I posted this in another thread...but it fits this topic discussion...So here goes.

I like Butch Jones ...He's my #1 favorite for UK's nxt HC (for reasons stated in other threads - personality, creativity, system, HC exp...& He's a salesman!). But I'm not Mitch...And who really knows where Mitch's head is at...I could see him going any # of ways...(other than keeping Joker, that is.)

We've heard rumors of some fan favorites...Pitrino, Tressel, Tuberville, Cutcliffe & Phatty McFulmer. (Im waiting on Houston Nutt to be the next re-tred mentioned - I'm sure it'll happen before too long!)...But of them...Only Pitrino really intrigues me (MANY great leaders/coaches are flawed individual men!)...Tuberville would be a solid - yet not so sexy pick (even if he brought Neal Brown as OC)...But honestly, any of them could elevate UK into the middle of the pack in the SEC East... (competing in SEC games & getting back to bowl eligible status on the consistent). Which would be much better that this crap!

If Mitch goes "Up & Comer"...(Do to striking out on the big name guy)....Dykes, Hudspeth, Diaco, Doeren, Campbell, either Stoops bro not named Bob...Any of those guys would really be solid choices, as well. All are talented fb minds & have qualities that will make them successful in the big leagues, one day. I think the fanbase would rally behind whichever guy. (For 3yrs MIN!) & maybe UK would find lightning in a bottle & gets the next great one. Some of those guys will win big in a BCS league in the not too distant future!!!

    OR...

Ol'Barny could surprise everyone and target an NFL guy...A "no one saw this coming" guy...A Rex Ryan - Jack Del Rio - Josh McDaniels...(maybe even Jason Garrett - who's a good HC but has some Total TOOLS in DAL!)....But it has to be guy w/ contacts all across the fb landscape & the ability to find talented assistants that can teach & some that are great recruiters on the college level. Of this kind of hire...I like the idea of Rex Ryan...The loveable load mouth & DEF specialist....& even if he does like his old lady's feet in a mildly creepy way...He's the type of character that could make UK relevant on a national stage & w/ the national media...(Which really helps not just in recruiting players, but boosters & fans & the STATE BOYS that just might let UK fund FB at a SEC level!)

Well...Even if it's a consultation prize to what UK could have been w/ Petrino...I'm still on the Butch Jones bandwagon!

"Kentucky: A source close to the program tells us that Mitch Barnhart has considerable interest in Cincinnati head coach Butch Jones."

Are you serious, Who's Hall of Fame will fat phil be in? what a joke. Pitrino is best option.

Its Petrino..if your gonna be a jackass..at least spell your #1 pick correctly. PETRINO..is a FAIL..hes left 2 BCS programs in shambles..dont see why he would have any more loyalty to UK. I personally dont want Bobby "Son of Anarchy" Petrino anywhere around our program. Could u imagine? He comes..wins 10 a couple years..then bolts 4 the first higher paying gig? WE would be worse off than we began.
KIRBY SMART...#1 choice by those that understand football
PHil Fulmer..proven track record in the SEC..the guy runs a clean program...great SEC winning %..won titles, SEC championships..tons of big bowls. Talking like he would bring Ron Zook in as DC..a great recruiter and good defensive mind..whats not to like? Fulmer went 9-3 the year before he was pushed out in favor of Lane Kiffin..another less than moral coach that is way overrated..did nothing at UT..has done less than stellar at USC..let me know when either Petrino or Kiffin wins a title or BCS bowl..wasnt that Petrino that had OSU down by 28 only to let them out coach him and lose? A less than stellar OSU squad
Dont get me wrong..it would be entertaining to watch Biker Boy Bobby on a special episode of cheaters or in lets make a deal..mabye even in Nitro Circus..
Fat Phil has a much better resume than Bobby P. so dont know where this is coming from from u Tiger!

    BigBlueDawg12

  • Recent news has San Jose ST's Mike MacIntyre as a frontrunner for UK gig. MM..a Bill Parcells understudy..spent 5 years as db coach for Cowboys and Jets..then was DC at Duke..who allowed 69 yards less and like 9 pts a game less than the previous year..named BCS Asst. Coach of year that year..2009...his recruiting class was ranked #1 in WAC by scout. Not a sexy hire..by any means..but if you want a guy that fields a good defensive unit and a SEC offense..meaning..he runs the ball between the tackles and focuses on ball control..fundamentals..could be a surprise pick.
    SMART..SMART..SMART..SMART..SMART..SMART..SMART ..SMART!!!!!!!!!

Please explain how Petrino left 2 BCS programs in shambles???

He left UofL after a 12-1 season & Orange Bowl victory. The players he left were considered to be a top10 team...#9, IINM...And it was a poor hire by Jurich (Kragthorpe) that proceeded to run the Cards program in the ground.

Yes, ARK let him go after his affair/mid-life crisis...However, ARK went 11-2 & won the Cotton Bowl in 2011...And the team he left behind was considered a NC contender / top 10 team...before AD Long's poor hire (John L. Smith) proceeded to run that team in the ground.

And JFYI...Yeah OSU came back & won the Sugar...But that game was total BS! Tressel played ineligible players that should never been on the field...You know, the same players that ultimately got his ass canned at OSU for running a dumpster fire of a program, costing him a 5yr "Show Cause" penalty!!

Fulmer is washed up & has been out of college FB forever / Zook is no savior as a DC....I want neither of those ex-Vol's in LEX (I think we've had enough of them for a lifetime!)

Smart hasn't proved squat about his coaching ability & there are serious doubts about his ability to recruit to UK the kind of players needed to run his DEF. Looks great w/ ALA's 3deep full of 4*/5* players...but so does Minter's system, which is the Ravens DEF, when it's ran by All-Pro's like Suggs, Lewis, Reed & Ngata. Not so much when it's UK's players!!!

And Lets' not forget....The BCG + Joker fiasco make 2 huge mistakes by Mitch w/ the major revenue sports at UK...Those mistakes have cost over $8M in buy-outs. (not to mention the $1.5M Tubby got as a LOYALTY BONUS...just prior to him cutting bait & high tailing it to Minnesota!

So, He better go w/ the PROVEN SEC commodity this time. Cause, If Mitch does not make this a true home run hire...He's likely to be let go/run out of town in 3yrs or less, when his guy flops AGAIN. (3 strikes - your out!)

And the ONLY true HOME RUN hire that we know is interested in the UK gig is Petrino...& If he was hired...The only way he's leaving UK for a better gig, is if he wins at UK. Period. If he screws the pooch again, he's basically committing career suicide...And he knows it...He knows he would end up at a DII / DIII / NAIA level school (like Mumme). I do not see him allowing that to happen...And I know for sure that he wants to be in the state, long-term & is willing to make concessions to do so... (Mama Petrino isn't going anywhere, anytime soon...And she's the one calling the shots right now! Take my word on that. She has him by the nuts & then some!)

Because, he's not the guy "they" want so he left the other programs in shambles. I've asked several times that they explain and none have. Even Matt May has spoken out on this forum against the Petrino hire. They all state his transgressions at Arky and he's a jerk and he left the falcons, blah, blah, blah. He's a winner. I say the work he did at U of L was ruined by a bad hire by the AD. Not by the coach who left.

On it's own, the UofL claim you make would hold water. But EVERY JOB HE HAS LEFT he has left things a complete HOT mess. Kragthorpe had a band of merry thugs who were getting shot in clubs and getting caught with huge amounts of pot in their cars. That didn't magically start when Petrino left.

So, Thugs getting shot in clubs & players on dope is the reason UofL went 6-6 in 2007 w/ basically the same roster as the 2006 12-1 team??

Maybe it's that Petrino is the kind of coach that can keep borderline lunatics out of trouble & get the most out of them on the field...And Coach Crapthorpe was too soft to do so. Much the same could be said for ARK w/ John L. Smith.

And BTW, ALT went all hot mess before he coached a single game...IINM, he lost Vick to the dog trial/jail before he ever got to coach him!!!

The last thing I think about when hiring a coach is how that coach is going to leave the job. I mean really how stupid is that. You don't hire a coach worried about what things will be like when that coach leaves the program. You hire a coach like he's going to be here forever. And if said coach is winning and getting it done you do everything in your power to keep him here forever.

For most coaches no, i wouldn't worry about how he left it. But when you are dealing with Petrino you know he's looking to leave as quickly as possible. Been that way with every job he has had.

Let me play Devil's Advocate here.

    1. Do you blame him for wanting to leave Louisville? Terrible conference. Hard to recruit. No matter how you look at it, it's a stepping-stone job. Every coach they've ever had has been looking to leave as soon as possible.

    2. Do you blame him for wanting to leave the Falcons? For starters, when he took the job he thought Vick would be there. Most importantly, though, he realized he is a college coach, not a pro coach. You can criticize him for the way he left, but I don't think you can criticize him for wanting to leave. If you do that, you'll also have to jump on Saban, Spurrier, Calipari, Pitino and the million other guys who realized they are college coaches, not pro coaches.

    3. Have you heard that he was trying to leave Arkansas? Maybe it's out there, but I never heard it.

    Beavis13

  • Let's look at leaving a team in a hot mess. To say every team would be fair but let's point out every equals 3. Of the 3 teams 1 he would probably still be coaching. Louisville is not lifetime dream position. How long should a coach stay? The Falcons is a questionable situation. It would depend if you can believe Joe B. I'll give you it was at the very least handled poorly. Arkansas let him go due to his stupidity. He might have stayed there for a number of years.
The hot mess though could be any number of coaches legacy. Using the assumption that he did them wrong by leaving for what seemed a better opportunity and causing those programs to take a dip would be unfair IMO. You need to label Urban Meyer with that as well. Bowling Green, Utah, and to a lesser degree Florida all paled in his wake. The success of those programs after the departure of the coach is on the AD. Sometimes a coach is good enough to make the next guy never able to measure up. Just ask Tubby Smith.
