Football info-Winston Guy tweets

  • Noticed 2 of Guy's tweets that were interesting. 1 was a tweet to Trevathan telling him they(UK?) moved Miles to Will LB, also saying he looks huge and it's due to "Coach Rock workouts". I'm assuming they are talking about Miles Simpson. Curious if anyone else heard about this. The 2nd tweet was to Collins Ukwu, and hoping his surgery goes well. Wanted to know what type of surgery Ukwu is having and if it's anything serious.

    Any info is appreciated!!

  • Interesting about Miles. I think he'd be a very athletic Will. He certainly had the frame to add some good weight. Also, if I'm not mistaken, Ukwu was to undergo shoulder surgery. I think he battled some discomfort for a good part of the season and that this surgery was planned ahead of time. With what he does on the field I don't think that it's something that is going to hinder his play next yr. If he played through discomfort then the surgery was probably not a huge deal that would involve a crazy, lengthy rehab. And he is not a thrower. Though for some reason I am quite fuzzy on his injury. I could be incredibly wrong....which is highly likely.

  • I saw Ukwu Saturday and he looked fine to me. It's probably not a major surgery.

  • Interesting news about Simpson. I think he could do well at WLB if he gets bulked up enough. So that begs the question......who do they have pegged for the OLB/S hybrid position? One of the new guys? I hate to overthink it, but maybe this was a move to show Henderson there is a spot wide open that he could step into.

Maybe they're looking to go to more of a traditional 3-4 where we would have Williamson and Simpson at the 2 LB spots and Wilson and Dupree at the OLB spots. Just a thought as that would be a way to get the most talent on the field at once.

  • Don't think Rump and Cobble are big enough space eaters for the "true" 3-4.
I think the move for Miles maybe more a combination of weight/strength gain and depth at Safety with Neloms, Faulkner, Benton, Lowery showing strongly there.
But then wasn't Miles a backup on Guy's position?
I'm guessing it's more from bulking up then and being able to be more of a traditional lber.

  • wonder what that means for McDuffin. Hate to waste 2 guys the staff were very high on last season stuck at the same position.

If Rumph and Cobble aren't big enough space eaters then who is? Another year in the weight room and those guys should be absolutely massive.

  • I still say there can be a VERY valid reason for letting news of this leak right before NSD when you have one of the best OLB's (in terms of recruiting service rankings and potential) that UK has had a legit chance of landing in a LONG time down to only UK and Ole Miss. Things like an open position that a player like that could play can be a good selling point down the stretch. He would have to gain some size to play either WLB or OLB/S, but he wouldn't need to be quite as big at the OLB/S position as he would at WLB in the SEC. And if you watch his videos, he looks really good dropping back in pass coverage. Again, I'm just sayin'.....

Cobble is plenty big enough to play the nose, and Rumph could probably get by as well. The question would be the 5-tech (3-4 DE) spots. I'd imagine that if we did go to a full-time 3 man front we'd start go with Rumph-Cobble-Ukwu across the front, with Coleman being the first man in at both end spots. They certainly have the athletes in the FR and SO classes, along with Ridge and Wyndham, to come-up with a pair of pass-rushing outside 'backers. Inside is a bit more questionable, as we lack some bulk there, but that isn't necessarily a killer depending on the type of 3-4.

Honestly, I have no idea what Minter is looking to do long-term. I always assumed the Safety-hybrid spot was just a way to get the best players on the field at once, and not a long-term tenet of the defensive scheme. That doesn't appear to be the case though, since they've been actively recruiting for guys to fill that role. I'm very curious to see what this D looks like going forward.

Cobble weighs like 320 or 330, correct? Rump is over 300 as well. I'm not sure you get much bigger than those two guys....especially Cobble.

Agreed, only I think Rumph is even bigger than Cobble. They would both do just fine along the DL in a 3-4. Like others have noted, its the other DE spot that would worry me as I'm not sure Ukwu has the size and strength to play End in a 3-4. Outside of Dupree and Wilson, I'm also not sure we have the manpower for the OLB positions in a 3-4 either as those guys are usually jumbo LB/DE types.

I actually like the attacking hybrid 3-4 we used this past season with 3 down linemen, the DE/OLB hybrid, 2 traditional LB's, and the OLB/S hybrid as the front 7. I think that type of scheme provides so much flexibility and allows you to attack from all different areas, but it creates a lack of size one at least one side of the LB's where they are asked to take on the lead blocker, be it a pulling Guard or a FB.

  • Cobble was carrying a little bit of bad weight this year. Rumph is a DE that can play DT, and Ukwu is a DE. It would be really nice to get all of the Louisville DL's in school and eligible. There is a strong chance we'll see a freshman (likely Chapman) get some PT this year on the nose.

  • Cobble has the correct body type for nose tackle in a 3/4 - short, about 6' 1" or so, chunky, with a wide body. Another year in the weight room and he could be a real solid player there IMO. Rumph is more of a 3 tech.
