Fourth and Short CM

  • I have seen the same play that Central Michigan ran on fourth down before and never understood it. They have fourth down and inches to go for a first down and give it to a running back two or three yards deep in the backfield. Why give it to a back that deep? I was glad to see them do that but it makes no sence. Turning point in the game.

  • I think the QB dive on a quick snap is the way to go every time, but the logic in giving to a RB is that the can build up steam and momentum before getting hit and they may have a second to see a hole instead of just slamming into a crowd.

  • Depends on how your center, if you center gets stood up then your QB can't lean forward. The downside of a QB draw is the QB has no momentum to get a lean. Their QB wasn't very big so I can see giving it to a back with a few steps to build momentum. But if the defense breaks the line its over. But that is the truth regardless. If your DL can penetrate then you can stop the short yardage play.

Exactly, if your OLine allows penetration your running play is pretty well blown up no matter if it's the QB on a sneak or a RB out of the backfield. If your OL can get a strong push the QB sneak is great, the lesser the push the more you need the atleticism and power of a RB with some momentum.

  • The decision to go for it should have never been made to start with. I wouldhave bet my last nickle that they were only going to try and draw the Cats offsides. The risk/reward wasn't worth it. At best, if you make it, you have the football at your own 35 and your offense still struggling (had been pretty much shut down since midway in the 2nd). At worst...well...you see what happens. At that point, your offense has been struggling for a little over a quarter, but your defense is still playing well. 100 times out of 100,you punt the football and make UK's struggling offense go 80+ yards.

As for the play, I prefer a sneak in that situation. Unless the play is completely blown up behind the line, you probably get it on the spot of the ball.

  • Punt the ball. They had total control of the game to that point. Horrible, horrible decision by the CMU coach. He helped get his team beat.

  • Speaking of questionable decisions, in fairness, you have to wonder why Joker went for the TD at the end instead of a FG to go up 10. Had they stopped that play and managed to tie it, you talk about getting BBQ'd.

Absolutely.....I would have kicked it, but.....

***The UK defense had been playing lights out since midway 2nd quarter. If you don't make it, then CMU has to drive nearly the length of the field to get the TD.

***McIntosh had already missed a chip shot earlier, and this one was even closer than a PAT, and IIRC, at an angle.

That said, I think Joker did it from a purely psychological standpoint, to challenge his players AND to show them he had faith in them.

I thought of Hal Mumme when they did that. I also thought they were just trying to draw us offsides. I guess he just got caught up in the moment, but man, that was awful and inexcusable. But I'm glad he did it!

Yeah, showed the team he believed in them and hopefully will give the offense some much needed confidence going forward in our schedule.

  • Jeff if they needn't make the touchdown CM would have been getting the ball on their own one yard line. Our defense had been doing a good job at that point. That is the same reason I would have gone for the touchdown in the first half instead of the missed field goal. Been a while since I have seen you. David from Lynch

  • The quarterback was 6'3"/ 215 lbs.

The running back they handed off to was 5'5"/ 166 lbs.

I think you nailed it. Seemed like he wanted to challenge them to punch it in.

I liked the play call, too, although Newton came REAL CLOSE to getting tripped up.

Hey David... Good to "see" you. Hope all is well in your neck of the woods. I got to see the Black Bears play a week or so ago. Larkey's building a great team there.

Anyway... I can see your point. I just think it was too big of a risk to bypass going up 2 scores with under 5 minutes to play.

  • My first thought was he should have kicked the field goal to go up two scores.

I am sure he thought about Craig McIntosh's rare miss from point blank range in the first half.

Also, he was making a statement to his team to put this visitor from the MAC away.

Retrospectively, the decision was obviously the correct one.
