Free Throws.......

  • I truly don't understand how a player can go 0-6 from the line, and a team 10/21...

Do they not work on free throws at all? If we shoot 70% from the line we win this one.

Have heard Cal say before that they don't spend practice time on FTs. We won't win many close ones with that type of FT average!!!

  • It's not something Calipari needs to work with.

It's something player themselves have to work with.

  • No they don't shoot any free throws at all. Cal does not think it's important or maybe they missed them on purpose. All this BS is sarcasm, but it sounds just as foolish as this topic. They had a bad free throw shooting game and Cauley Stein was responsible for the majority of them. Hell yes, it's disappointing but this team has improved big time. Relax and see what happens.

Not sure why you are all upset by discussing free throws... You should take your own advice and stop acting "foolish" and "relax".

We are just talking basketball here lil fella.

I have heard the same thing. I think this particular team may need to be the exception and have some free throw time.

  • Free throws are one area that each player has to spend his time on, by the 20 hour rule for practice time per week the individual has to take it upon himself to hone his game in this vital area. It is the same as going in the gym and getting up a few hundred jump shots or several post moves, the player not the coaching staff has to work to make themselves top shelf.

  • Well they were definitely worse than normal today, and was certainly a huge factor in this one. But it wasn't just WCS. I don't think we have anybody right now that we can really count on to drain several in a row. Boys need to work on it for sure.

You stole my post Sarge!! Onre things sure..not very many teams have won it all shooting poorly from the stripe. WE have to get better as a team, and individually, at free throw shooting if we hope to go past the sweet sixteen this year. Just think..had we hit only 4 of the 12 misses at the stripe..we win. UK was 11-23 im pretty sure. Poythress was MIA today..Goodwin had a horrible 1st half, Mayes a horrible game. WE still came close. THis team still hasnt bought into Cals system fully..no ones diving on the floor for loose balls..no ones battling besides a couple or three..the WHOLE team has to be scrappy, tough, determined. If Poythress had half of MKG's heart and motor..he would be a superstar.
When it comes right down to it..this team dosent want to put forth the effort, endure the pain it takes to be elite...jmo. Last years superior squad..all the kids, even the superstars like Davis and MKG..were warriors..they fought, scratched, dived, hustled thier way to victory. They had the WILL to win..this team dosent have that WILL yet..dont know if they will have it this year at all.

  • Free throws are important, but it's also not the biggest thing that team needs to work on.

We might have lost 12 points missing free throw, but no matter how much you work, you aren't going to make all that 12 points.

UK lost about 20 points from bad decision making. How many easy lay up did UofL have from bad passes? Those not only lose us possession, but gives them easy points. That swing of that far out does UK missing free throws. You guys talk about making half of those 12 points. That's 6 points.

I think we lost about 30 points from bad passes, and panicking from presses. Only one player handle press well, that was Harrow with 0 TO. Goodwin had 5 TO, and to be honest he had many more that caused a TO.

  • No way Goodwin should be shooting less than 64% from the freethrow line and WCS looked just down right aweful. I dont usually believe in moral victories but this game had positives about it and I saw more energy in the 2nd half than in the previous 2 games combined. Yes they lost but the progress showed tonight and it was encouraging. But there are 2 areas where they havent improved and that is with Goodwins awareness of where his teammates are when he drives to the hoop. It seems that he doesnt pay attention to anything but scoring himself. The 2nd thing is Poythress and his lack of playing hard and Im beginning to think he will never learn that to the extent that it will help the team. I really like the kid and he has all the potential in the world but potential is what you can accomplish not what you are actually doing.

  • I was just looking on the UKathletics site and as a team we are below 65%. The only 2 players above 70% are Wiltjer at 85% and Mays at 95%. I believe those #s are prior to todays game. The problem here is neither goes to the line much. Wiltjer only 13 attempts all year and Mays 21. Of course both are primarily jump shooters and unless they get more involved in driving then we can't expect too much more I guess.

As someone else has said, CAL doesn't work on them during his practice, the players work on them AFTER practice and are required to make so many so PLEASE stop acting like he doesn't care about free throws, its silly and pretty stupid.

    UKlaw82

  • Cal absolutely works on free throws. He just doesn't spend a lot of time on them. He can't. He only has 20 hours a week with them except for Christmas break.
Players have to get in the gym on their own. That's the fact.

What does cal do? He does high pressure scenarios every day in practice. Miss and you run situations.

^ ^ ^ This is the point Cal has made about players NOT "in love with the gym". You don't need a coach to practice FT's (in fact they may be a detriment as they are more likely to try to "change" the FT motion than just say "shoot 100 each day"). Individuals and teammates HAVE to practice FT's on their own time and I think a national TV audience brought that to this team's attention LOUD AND CLEAR. 60% is a LOUSY average (3 more made), but it would have got us to overtime and 65% (4 more made) would have won the game! And this goes without mentioning that Siva committed about 15 fouls and Smith a dozen that WERE NOT CALLED (rant over!).
