Future Cats shine at Hoop Summit

With its signees accounting for four of the 10 total starters on the floor, the Nike Hoop Summit served as a running informercial for UK coach John Calipari's program.

  • Yeah... their stats were amazing. How in the heck does Rivers get MVP with 20 pts and "0" assists? Davis had 16 pts, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks (more like 4). He would have had even more if Rivers knew how to dish the ball. Teague sure as heck knows how to. I'm excited about this class. I can hardly wait!

  • The Biyombo kid was very, very impressive. Physically dominating. Wouldn't be surprised one bit to see an NBA team spend a first round pick on him this summer.

What I liked about him more than anything was his mentality. He literally tries to dunk everything.

  • I was very impressed with each of our guys last night. Davis and Gilchrist had better games than Teague and Wiltjer but you can see how these guys will fit in with Cal's scheme definitely. Lots of talent going to be added to an already talented team.

He looked like a man among boys for the most part. He's a big dude who just took it at people. That said, I thought Davis and Gilchrist did a good job of being aggressive in the paint and not backing down to anyone.

  • He didn't have the best night last night, but UK fans are going to love Kyle Wiltjer.

He's just so skilled. And how can you not love his sweeping hook shot? His game is very old school.

  • I can actually contribute to a conversation for once! I actually watched this game.

Davis performed well and looked as good as advertised. Gilchrist seems to me to be the key of our class. HE has major hops on both sides of the court and a nice touch.

Teague will be a good one, however I am not expecting dominance like some of the other kids in the past few classes.

These kids will fit well into Cal's DD. The two most impressive were David and Gil for what I watched.

Maybe its the grass is always greener mentality, however I wish we could take 2 or 3 more of the kids that played in the game.

    1. The Wroten kid that is going to Washington can fly and is a hell of a passer. Wish we could have stolen this kid away. He had a one handed no look pass at the top of the key to Davis that was ridiculous.

    2. Biyombo has already declared for the NBA. He was a beast in the inside. He was a man amongst boys.

    3. Rivers is going to be a good one. He will not only score for Duke, but he will be a calming influence for a team.

On a final negative note (please hold back the tomatoes)... the Portland kid who played for team Canada, Wiltjer was the least impressive of the signed kids that I saw. He took a few bad shots and did not look nearly as athletic as the rest of the competition. Hopefully he is a kid we are only looking at for only spot duty the first year or two. OR maybe he just had a bad day... he still scored 12 while looking bad so maybe thats a good thing?

    Clever stuff here.

  • Thanks for all the info Chris and Amped. Looks like we are going to be well stocked if we can just get a couple more guys to stay!

  • Is there anywhere to see a replay of this game?

You are basing Kyles athletic ability against other top level talent....being a good basketball players has nothing do with being able to jump out the gym or run and move with great agility. This kid has the best post moves by any kid in his class and the best shooter as well...at least for a big man. He will be a stud at UK...I think you need to get on youtube and watch him more...I think you will change your mind.

  • Anthony Davis and Mike Gilchrist are going to go off in Cal's system. There has never been a more perfect inside/outside duo for the DDM.

Who was the MVP in your mind?

  • Very exciting for sure! I'm really thinking that if we can steal back a couple of players from the '11 squad that the 2012 team has the potential to be extremely special!

  • 2nd year in a row I didn't get to see it. Cable system in Hampton doesn't carry Fox. upset

Hoping they re-air it at some point.

  • After watching these guys on the same floor 2 times, no doubt Rivers has the name, Davis has the most upside, and Gilcrest is the best player now.

    blueboy

  • Nothing to see Jeff, just 4 average to above average guys going to UK in one class. Reminds me of Tubby's recruiting near the end. You can pick it up later when they get to campus.

I don't know which game you watched, but there was nothing close to 'average' with Davis, Teague and Gilchrist in the Nike Hoops game last night. You have to put it into perspective with the other players on the floor, who were allstars as well.
As for Tubby near the end at UK, he didn't even try to get this kind of talent. Surely you remember how bare the cuppord was when he left.

P.S. As far as personalities go, Tubby is one of my favorite coaches.
