Gillispie

  • I'm watching Texas Tech and Iowa State. There's this kid who is about 5'8 and appears to have a headband holding his hearing aids in who has played the entire time I've been watching. He looks about fifteen years old. CBC is stinking it up so far in Texas.

  • He's doing the typical sucks really hard the first year, turns them around the second year routine he has had throughout his career (except at UK). Too early to tell how he'll do at TTU.

    jamccain

  • He did that twice, then fell flat on his face once. I'm not sure I would call that scenario typical at this point!

    BigTyrone

  • There is no doubt he is a good coach. He just wasn't ready for UK and his personality didn't mesh well with most of the fan base.

    Keepin in fresh since 1986.

  • Heard he ended up with only 1 returning player from last years team, don't know if it is true, but the guy is seriously starting from scratch. . . Not that I'm a huge BCG supporter or anything, but it's just a fact. . .

You know, I don't hate the guy. But I'm going to make fun of him for years and years to come.

Until he turns that program around then it will be much harder to make fun of the guy.

Folks it takes a coach with thick skin and a buisssnnneeessssss mans grit and ethics about him to coach at UK. Billy was not ready for UK now and prob neaver would have been. Ask Tubby he won 28 or more games at UK almost every yr. a NC and well was wisked away.

Then I'll see he looks like an outcast hobbit, crouching on the sidelines with that weird sociopathic grin on his face.

But he'll need players to turn it around. So far his recruiting has picked up where he left off at Kentucky. One two star guard from Arkansas and three jucos are his class of 2012 so far.

We'll see I guess. I'm not predicting that he does turn em around. Just making the statement that he'll be much less harder to make fun of if he does. He'll become a mad genuis again.

  • I wouldn't be shocked if that happened in a few years. His tenure here was just so weird for so many reasons... If it weren't for Cal coming in and kicking butt immediately, CBC would probably be hated by everyone. As it is, I don't know many fans who care much about him one way or the other. It was just a weird phase we went through, and it's over now.

Not sure I buy into that really anymore. Good coaches don't take superior talent and lose consistently to teams with less talent. That's what Gillispie did at UK.

Gardner Webb, VMI, San Diego, Georgia and on and on.

I PM'd him yesterday telling him/her that. He did do that once or twice since that PM, but now he has reverted back to copy and paste.

Houston, UAB, and the worst in my mind, by 41 to Vandy.

Not defending the guy, but think he was a decent point guard away from a sweet 16 team. The injury of Jasper hurt.

  • it's funny BCG came up as I was talking to a guy yesterday that told me a Div 1 coach friend of his thought Gillispie was a fantastic coaching mind but the bottle killed him while at UK.

I know his drinking troubles have been well-known, but I thought it was interesting that a peer/colleague held BCG in such high regard.

I had heard before that there are people that say that the Billy Gillispie that was at UK was not the Billy Gillispie they knew prior.

Just couldn't have been a worse fit personality-wise for the position.

That is what you get when your AD depends on one of those 3rd party coaching search firms to hire your coach instead of them doing the due diligence and hard work themselves.

UK flubbed that coaching hire/search big time there's no question. Think the national perception was that no one wanted the job and they panicked.
