When is the last time that UK was able to hire an awesome assistant from a top notch school? And I don't think the problem is that we aren't offering.

I might be wrong...as I often am.....but I think John Ray. He was hired late in 1968 from Notre Dame. Had a career record of 39-39.

  • I'm not at all in favor of a Kirby Smart hire. Sure, he looks like a great DC, but, who wouldn't, at Alabama. They're 2 deep in 5 star talent and go 3-4 deep in 4 star talent. You or I should be able to look great when you have that type personnel to work with. I guarantee you, 90% of the defensive coordinators in college football could put up equal results as Smart's with the same talent.

Give me a guy with Head Coaching experience. No guarantee that a coordinator can handle the head position, as we've already seen. I want a proven HC that can recruit, hire strong assts and plays a fun style to watch.

I get what you are saying but there are plenty of coaches that have failed with 4 and 5 star talent as well. Case in point Mike Shula, Ron Zook, Larry Corker, etc.......Just because you get them on campus doesn't mean you're going to win. You still have to develop them and get them to work as a unit. Something Smart is doing very well this since he lost almost all his starters from last years team.

Also look at Auburn right now. They've had 3 or 4 straight top ten recruiting classes. But yet what was one of the things the announcer said during the game the other day? Doesn't matter how much talent you recruit unless you can develop it which Auburn isn't doing?

    Just saying.

  • Joker was a good coordinator. Didn't make him a successful head coach. Muschamp was a terrific coordinator, but, the verdicts still out as far as his head coaching goes. Alot of UF fans were calling for his head in the 1st year.He may work out great, but, the point is, it's a risky proposition hiring an unknown commodity, which 99% of coordinators are and it's 100 times easier to succeed at a UF than it is at a UK. I still prefer a guy who has a proven track record with Xs and Os and one who has proven he can maximize talent to compete with less, because, regardless of what people believe, UK will never and I repeat, never get the talent that the upper echelon of the SEC brings in.

Personally, I'd be all over Charlie Strong. He probably wouldn't come, but, I'd at least give him a shot. Something else to think about is this. It's actually possible that if UK hired Strong that he may want Joker to stay on staff. That would be very unusual in todays landscape, but, I honestly think those 2 could work well together and as much as Joker loves UK and wants them to succeed so badly, he may well be willing to stay on if asked. That would also help us keep some of these guys who may waiver on there commitment if Joker's not there. Just something to think about.

I think we have found out the past two weeks what kind of coach Muschamp is. He has shut down Texas A&M and Tennessee the 2nd halves on the road. That is what Smart could do with improved talent here in a fee years IMHO.
