Fair or not, coaches are always going to give scholarship players more of a shot than walk-ons. It's just the nature of the game. Walk-ons have to be extraordinarily better than the other guy to surpass them in 99.9% of the cases. Obviously, Williams has taken advantage of his chance. Good for him.
Dupree was moved to linebacker because they feel he's a better player there, both now and down the road. Not everything is for right this second. Football is about development and what a kid is after 2-3 years in the program. he's a true freshman 8 games into his career playing behind veterans. They love his potential. And unless you've spoken to the kid and he's told you he doesn't like defense, I think you are treading into dangerous waters trying to read an 18-year-old's mind and or body language. Also, how do you KNOW he could have helped at tight end this year?
As for Gainer, so coaches are supposed to preach that you have to work hard and earn your spot and then you're supposed to just hand someone the job despite the fact they don't give you any indication in practice they can trust you? That makes a ton of sense. He fumbles. A lot. He's been hurt. It is what it is. What do you think other players think if they are told practice matters then they see a guy who puts the ball on the ground over and over play ahead of them? In fact, you stated Williams should have be playing above Sanders because he's proven to be better, yet you also want a guy who hasn't proven himself to be better than the other backs to jump the ones who have? That's a double standard.
With Crawford, there are a lot of reasons coaches do the things they do. And it's not always about winning football games. Despite what seems to be prevailing opinion these days they are coaching COLLEGE kids and are just as responsible for making them good people and developing them into men who can go out in the world and be productive members of society for themselves and their families. One percent of these kids will ever make money playing football. Besides, Crawford does indeed play, he just doesn't start because he's not the better player.
Go check Mossakowski's stats since those first few games. He hasn't exactly set the world on fire. Did he get a fair shot? I don't know. I know his arm was never healthy. I think the staff made a mistake in not staging a competition during bowl practices for the job, and I don't blame Moss for leaving, but he wasn't the answer either.

BOOM!!
Funny how he has something to say to everyone else except you rompcat. You pretty much said everything I was going to.
The notion that Joker has "hitched his wagon" to Newton is ridiculous. He has pulled him twice and after Smith showed ability the other day he opened the competition up.
Acat-You basically just used this as a platform to bash Joker, then attempted to insult everyones intelligence by acting like you hate being negative. Don't lie. You are loving every second of it guy. If Smith starts you are going to look real smart. Just sayin.

About this:
"Why was Coshik behind Sanders? Williams hits the hole better and runs harder than Sanders. Why was he behind him?"
Sanders weighs 205 and Williams 178. We need runners that can block. Before the past couple of weeks our line has been shot due to injury.
Next...
"Why move Dupree to LB where he rarely sees the field and we have decent depth. When he could have helped at TE THIS year. IMO, the kid doesn't play like he likes being on defense."
Not sure. Is Dupree playing LB or the LB-DE hybrid spot? But, we have a lot of depth at TE we don't have at LB/DE.
Next:
"I wonder why Gainer sticks around? Why does a fumbling problem in practice for Gainer prevent him from seeing the field when Newton fumbles and tosses picks in gameday situations."
Newton's back up is Smith who is a true freshman and has had very little time to grasp the offense. Yanking him earlier would have accomplished nothing except to help Smith develop bad habits (dumping too fast, locking onto a receiver, etc.) that would have slowed down his development. Other than Gainer in the backfield we have Sanders (currently injured), Clemons (out for the year), and Williams and Jonathon George. Sanders, Williams, and George all have more experience in the system than Smith. Plus, Gainer had a serious elbow injury followed by a serious infection.
This:
"Obviously ball security isn't that important to Joker."
IS NOTHING MORE THAN MADE UP NONSENSE.
This:
"Give Gainer a shot during a game,"
He got some carries against Jacksonville State. I didn't see any need to put him in against MSU. Two other backs that have been working hard without putting the ball on the ground in practice got carries. They have been waiting and working to play too.
This:
"I don't care if it puts the ball on the ground during drills. Some kids are just "gamers" with poor practice habits."
My guess would be that most coaches in America don't put in kids with poor practice habits. Gainer did OK versus an outmatched Jacksonville State but his accomplishments (against an outmatched opponent) didn't scream for playing time. No proof of being a "gamer" in that game.
About this:
"What's up with keeping a guy like Crawford on the team if your never really going to forgive his past mistakes?"
He gets in and plays. But, he is behind Rumph and Cobble. I don't see any reason for him to start.
This:
"And then there's the Moss situation. Just never felt like the kid got a fair shot."
This is a case of feelings not matching reality.

Look, I take zero amount of joy from losing every darn week. I've got season tickets and will continue to get them to support UK FB. Over the years I've come to follow FB more closely than BB. So I'm not happy with the direction of the program in many areas. I may be coming across the wrong way, but I've seen enough from Joker to form an educated opinion. His results don't lie. If you all want to blindly support every decision and comment from Joker, go right ahead.

This thread is exhausting. If Joker were from outside the program everyone would be bitching about the lack of talent Brooks left him with. Joker has not been perfect but he has not been coach for even two full seasons and he has pulled the trigger where he has seen a problem, recruiting and defensive coordinator. We are in a down year. They happen. Let's see where we go from here. I for one think the quality of recruits is improving and that 2 weeks ago everyone was saying this team is getting worse. In the last 2 weeks I have seen improvement especially on the offensive side of the ball. I still believe it will be 2013 before we see the 8 or 9 win potential season but the young players I have seen on the field and the recruits coming in are indication of things to come. I suspect Max will start.

You bring up a good point about Brooks. We all seem to NOW agree that the program is void of playmakers. Yet those of us who dare place same of the blame on Brooks and the FACT that the program was in decline (just check the record since the LSU win) get labeled haters.
He played a role in this whether people want to admit it or not.

Not intentionally trying to get off topic, but I've got one question for the Joker supporters who think Brooks needs to take some blame too.
If the program was in decline while Brooks was here, why did Mitch promote an OC from the same staff that was treading water or going backwards? It was my understanding that Joker was promoted for continuity reasons. Barnhart obviously felt the direction of the program was sound. So should my frustration be directed at Mitch instead of Joker?

IMO frustration should be with everyone including the waterboy. I think with hiring Joker they got some continuity but it could have been a smoother transition if Mitch comes out and says this is the plan moving forward, then gave stadium updates and the whole 9 yards. Then Joker should have replaced everyone he wanted to as soon as the opportunity arose. The recruiting is getting better for UK but it will still take some time to be equivalent to the USCjr, UThug types. The direction of the program wasnt "so sound" as we are finding out. Anyone think about CRB leaving right before things declined?
