Gotta Love Jacob Hyde....and other recruiting notes!!~!

  • You have to love Jacob Hyde...kid bleeds blue...hes the best DT at the U-19 USA team...whipping 5 star Laremy Tunsil's butt all around the field and pushing Hunter Bivin to the ,limit. He's recruiting for UK. Thats big. Peer Pressure can make you do things you wouldnt normally do...and if Hyde bonds with some USA teammates...who knows? If Hyde wasw a Bama or Texas committ....hed be a 5* kid. Im from Breathitt Co..played and coached all my life...trust me when I say Jacob Hyde can step in and play SEC ball now.
Kudos to Joker and his staff...using every coach to recuit...that gives each coach more time to bond and form relationships with thier prospects. I see GREAT improvement in recruiting...were gonna have more than 5 kids with offers from Ohio St, Fla ST, Notre Dame, Clemson, Miami, ect ect.
I think if we land Khalid Thomas, Dajuan Drennon, Ryan Timmons...along with Maurice Swain and his teammate Ricky Frazier....this will be the best class in mabye forever...if Hyde can flip Hunter Bivin...Joker and Dermontii can flip Reon Dawson..and or we land D'Andre Wilon and Mykal Moody...John Wall gets Corey Cooper to committ...this would be the best class ever for Uk.
For those Joker haters out there...watch this year. The class comin in has a ton of talent and 4 some unknown reason...a kid commits to Uk never seems to get any extra stars past 3. Tell me AJ LeGree isnt as good as any of the top 10 WRs in 2012 class after his career is done...that kid is a special talent. Sure hands...good size..tough...47" vertical blocks well..and he will lay out and sacrifice his body to make a grab. And both rb's...Dyshawn Mobley is 6'0 225 and can flat fly and makes amazing cuts for his size...while Jonathan Taylor a Bama committ before they told him to wait...looks like a Trent Richardson clone...bulldozes De and LB's. Runs hard and has great hands and great vision, cut back once and gets north fast and lowers his shoulders.
KUDOS JOker..luv ya man, keep it up..we will get there soon...2013 or 2014 we will be best team in SEC east!! IMHO.
BIGBLUEDawg12 OUT!!! Let me kow what ya guys think...agree/disagree..lets talk football guys. Vote 4 me!!

  • I agree to a point. talent and depth wise I think we are closer than we've ever been to having staying power. I'm still not sold on joker as a coach, but I think this year we can make a more accurate judgment of where we are truly at.

I like joker and hope he succeeds and respect how he runs the program and values character in his players.

  • I also agree to a point. You started to get a little crazy with your commitments though. Justin Taylor btw.

  • Jacob Hyde has apparently been killing it at every camp he's been at going against 4 and 5 star players. WHY THE HELL is he still a middle of the road 3 star. Give the kid a freaking bump.

Kids that come here very seldom get the love that those that leave the state do. Its kind of sad but I hope he plays here and becomes an AA.

No sh*t. JDrum, you need to talk to the 247 folks about this and do some lobbying for Hyde. When is the next wave of updated rankings?

No kidding...I hope the UK staff encourages him to cool it, and stop going to camps and showcasing his 'country strength'. Additionally, let's keep the 247 staff pegging him laying in the weeds at 3 stars. No need for drawing the attention of vultures.

You dont win recruiting trophies because UGa would be perennial champ. See how that's working for them.

Well, UGA won the SEC East division last year and are expected to do so again this year with some outside chatter of being a National Championship caliber team.

I would take that lack of success.

  • Sort of reminds me of Myron Pryor who was a 2 star but showed similar types of ability. WE all know how that one ended.

Richt underdelivers every year. UGA won the east by default mainly because the two traditional powers (UT / UF) sucked.

With the talent UGA reaps EVERY year, they should be much more dangerous. It seems every year, they spit the bit on a game they should dominate.

Throw an awesome coach in Athens and THAT would be a sleeping giant.

I have argued for several years now that it would benefit UK tremendously for each of our commitments to get bumped up as high as possible b/c it would mean a boost in the class rankings, which creates more attention to the program, which gets the attention of younger recruits, and so on. Even if you have the exact same players, it would benefit the program in the long run a LOT more to have all of our recruits get ratings boosts to put the class rank higher than to have them all fly under the radar and us come in with a class rank in the 40's or worse. You want your class rank to be as high as possible for more than just bragging rights. The excitement it generates with future recruits and fans is big.

  • After watching all of his plays in the U19 tournament, Hyde has impressed me. First off, he was given the starting nod over an Ole Miss commitment who is pretty darn good in his own right.

Second, he did pretty well at times against double teams when he played with a low pad level and fired off the ball. There was a great play in the gold medal game where he stood up a double team, split them, and made a tackle at (or just behind) the LOS. He was also a handful when he clearly was supposed to get up the field. He got pushed around some by double and triple teams, and whiffed a few times on ball carriers, but clearly has the strength and mobility you want in an SEC NT.

He really needs to work on his pad level and hands, as his punch could be much more violent and explosive. Adding a few moves to his pass rush is also needed. He currently has a bull rush and a push-pull (which also needs work), but would be much better served by adding a rip move to get underneath and cross the OL's face.

  • 1) Getting wins helps recruiting more than anything.
    2) Getting dudes to NFL helps as well.
    3) comfort/relationships with staff
    4) tradition
    5) perks- facilities, chicks, conference

I tend to think most will forget an abstract list from 2009 based on a geek's opinion of compiled evaluations of HS performance.

I agree with you on 1-5. No doubt about any of those. My only point is that it is in your program's best interest, from a perception standpoint and for the purpose of getting more chatter going about your program, to have classes ranked higher than lower. Recruits take notice of things like that. Now, is a recruit THIS year going to make a decision based on what UK's class rank was 3 or 4 years ago? Hell no. But if UK were to suddenly get classes in the top 25 for the next couple of years, would the recruits in the next class take notice? Some absolutely would.

  • This comment isn't just for 247 but includes all the rankings by the services that pride themselves on being the best, this is an example of a miss. This kid has all the tools and is blowing up the camps. Thats not my opinion but those who run the camps and has followed him in the usa play. Hope the young man gets a bump not so much because he is coming to UK but in this case because he deserves it.

Still a little raw, by his own admission and that of his coaches, but there's no denying the potential. He's on the cusp of a fourth star now, and he learned some good technique stuff from David Turner in camp this summer that he hopes will make him even more potent for Clay County this fall. I think there's a chance that film could help him move up to a 4-star.

Jeff, you know as well as we do that there are a LOT of "raw" players in the 4* (and even the 5*, to a lesser extent) category. They go around and get bumped up to 4* and 5* status based, in large part, on how fast they run, how high they jump, how quick they run drills, and so on in the camp circuit. It is an absolute joke that a kid like him can go out and dominate elite competition every time he faces them, be it in camps or at the Team USA practices (which I actually don't put as much stock in as a lot of others, b/c I realize the team wasn't made up of the absolute elite of the elite this country has to offer), yet he still gets held in check at the 3* status. If he was committed to a bigger "name" program, he would have been at least a 4* by now, if not a 5*. Yet, he commits early to UK and plays in "little ole Kentucky" (nevermind that players who face weak competition in small states get 4* and 5* star ratings all the time if the big boys are offering them or if they commit to a big boy program), so he is just piddling along as a run-of-the-mill 3* in the eyes of the recruiting services. I'm sorry, but its a joke. Raw or not, Hyde has earned at least a low 4* ranking.

JD..I played on Breathitt County's 95 state title team..I've coached there 8 years...I've seen Hyde in action several times...I dont care what his 40 time is..hes explosive...and has the strength of an ox...kid can rep 225 something like 26 times and can powerclean your average volkswagon...(ok..lol on that) Id guess his max bench to be in the 425 range...he does need some technique work..but what 17 year old kid dosent? He could learn to use his hands better to separate from O-Linemen, but he can split most trap blocks(double team) I've seen him shuck a 6'4 280lb OT and just flat bulldoze a huge guard then make a TFL like 3 yards deep. More than once. High school centers fear this kid. DR.Jekyl..as I call him...is Myron Pryor with more strength and a higher ceiling at the same point in thier careers!
