Gus Malzahn to Ark. St.

  • That makes the Bama, Auburn, and Florida OC jobs open now. Arkansas has already changed both OC and DC and Ole Miss changed everybody.

That SEC west is cut throat. BTW wonder how Zeke Pike is taking this news?

  • Funny he turned down big dollars at Vandy for Ak State. Wow, move while your hot because that will come back to hurt you.

  • Aren't there better jobs than this still open? Are folks shying away from Gus?

No doubt. I'm shocked he had to take a job like Arkansas State, unless there was some underlying issue and he just wanted the heck out of Auburn.

  • Personally I think without Cam this season good old Gus just lost some of his luster. Could be something underlying but if there was it would seem there would've been something leaked by now.

  • Just remembered, Auburn is looking for a DC as well, Ted Roof left last week for one of the smaller Florida schools.

Didn't most Auburn fans applaud that move though? Their defense was pretty atrocious this past season aside from ElToro Freeman.

  • A story on Auburn's rivals site says he made $1.3 million this year as OC and that he will make $1.25 per year at Arkansas State. What???

I have a very close friend who is a die hard Auburn fan ( God help her ) that is absolutely ecstatic that both of them are gone.

Finebaum said Malzahn's interview at UNC was going very well until the AD said, "oh yeah Gus, are you still married?" *LMAO*

  • My how the might have fallen. Arky State? Wow!! And, for less money. Ouch. I think we're about to see how good Chizik is as a coach. Just three years in and he's lost both coordinators to lesser schools. One made a lateral move and one got a "promotion." Was his success tied to someone else's players? Can he and his staff coach up the talent they're getting AND keep up with LSU and 'Bama? Not sure Gene will last much longer on The Plains.

  • Arkansas St. just won the Sun Belt and went 10-2 this year. They will return a very good QB in Ryan Aplin who threw for 3200+ yards and ran for 600+ yards with 27 combined TDs. His offense should be effective with a QB like that. Plus, he's from Arkansas.

  • maybe he should have took the Vandy job when he could have but really is Vandy ever going to win consistently in the SEC? Yeak okay they had a nice season by their standards but still they're not going to win double digit games, I know their is more prestige in the SEC but Arky St is a job you can get a promotion from, see Hugh Freeze!

I believe I read where Malzahn is from Arkansas and said he just needed a change. But still, I'm surprised that with all the high-profile job openings that he ended up at Arkansas State.

Even if he would have been a complete and utter failure at Vandy, it was reported he would have made a GUARANTEED $3 million per year there for 7 years (according to VandySports.com). At his current $1.25 million, it will take him 17 years to make that much at Arkansas State.

  • He can go to Arky St and shine as a HC and look like an offensive genious against mediocre talent. That will net him a bigger job than a Vandy, Kansas, or Minnesota type job in a couple years for more than the 3 million he would have earned at Vandy.

Perhaps he's posturing for the Arkansas job figuring that Petrino is ready to move since he has stayed put for an eternity by Petrino standards. lol.

^ This. I think you're absolutely right. What coach has ever used Vandy, Kansas, Minnesota, etc. as a spring board to a bigger job? I know DeNardo left Vandy for LSU and Holtz left Minnesota for Notre Dame but they are clearly the exception to the rule. Ark St. has a really good team coming back and Malzahn's name will be linked with openings at schools a lot more stable and with more potential than the schools he's had opportunities with so far, maybe Kentucky in a year or two.

Wasn't sure what you guys were referring to at first. In case anyone missed it, this is what they are referencing as it pertains to Malzahn's wife's interview.

His wife's video comments didn't stop Arkansas State from making Gus Malzahn a head coach

It's not UNC or KU, but it could be the right place for him.
