Harrow talks UK pressure, illness

Whether Ryan Harrow’s playing time changes now that he has returned to Kentucky remains to be seen. But he already detects a minor change in coach John Calipari’s approach.

  • The passing out isn't a mystery. It's called panic attacks. Get the kid to a shrink so he can get a handle on his situation. And there's no shame in that. It's a pretty common issue.

I agree it could have been panic attack but everyone has to remember that are a 1000 things that can cause a person to pass out and a panic attack is only 1 of them, and I know because of 20+ years as a Mental Health Professional. Carl your "panic attack" statement is a good guess and it does go with what limited knowledge that those on the outside have. Ryan come roaring back for both your sake and the teams.

Carl, it wasnt me. I dont down vote people unless they are over the top vulgar or otherwise offensive. You shouldnt be down voted for expressing an honest opinion on whats going on no matter the subject.

  • Carl,
With all due respect, I do not believe that it is appropriate to speculate on someone's illness unless you are an MD, and only then after an examination and testing.

I dont believe Carl was diagnosing anything but just putting forth an opinion. I have worked for over 20 years as a mental health pro and have multiple degrees but Im not an Md. I can guess and thats what it is and w/o examining Ryan face to face no diagnosis could be rendered. But again its purely speculation on my and Carls' part what caused Harrow to miss his time w/the team but that legit on a site like this.

It might not be appropriate but this story is begging for speculation. He's been tested and there's nothing physically wrong with him. Everything points to a mental issue rather than a physical one. Of course I'm not a MD and could be wrong.

Sleepy I don't care about downvotes. In fact I expect and look forward to them in some cases. It's just some weird posts to downvote imo. It's not like I'm bashing the kid in any way.

  • With all due respect to Ryan, Carl is right. This situation begs for speculation. It doesn't matter if it is our business or not. He his in a public spotlight and when things are hidden from the public speculation is the result. It takes one look at the second episode of All Access to make the same conclusion as Carl.

The speculation is not all Harrow's fault. A lot of it has to do with how Cal handles these situations. In his eyes he is protecting his players. While I typically agree, in this specific case it could hurt as much as it protects. Nobody wants a mental issue to become public (or even have those close to us know) but facing that issue is what really helps. I'm not a MD either, but that's how I feel. Creating speculation only makes it worse for that individual IMO. I can only imagine what he thinks about everyone that is wondering what his issue is.

With all that said I want to wish him the best and I'll be rooting for him all year long. It may not be a mental issue. Do I buy that? Not really, but that gives me even more reason to root for his success. We all have mental issues to some extent. Whether it be serious or a lack of confidence or whatever. I honestly hope he has a major impact on this team and realizes his dreams.

In a tweet yesterday Harrow was quoted as saying that this "illness" has happenned the last four years to him and it happens at the same time of the year. It's a complete mystery to him. Same thing happened to him last year and no one really noticed or cared because he was not playing.

Maybe he just has an aversion to the Thanksgiving holiday. Maybe he just does not like cranberries and clam turkey stuffing and gets sick thinking about it.

Holiday depression is not an unusual or rare malady.

lol You nailed it. It's bad clams in the stuffing. But yeah the same kinda thing ran through my mind as well. This happens at the beginning of every bball season. That's not coincidence. I would imagine this episode was the worst of all considering the added pressure of being the PG at UK and being so far from his family. I'm wondering if the UK staff are doing anything for the kid. As in therapy or if they're just letting him ride it out and deal with it on his own. I wonder if he needs that or if maybe he needs an old school in your face drill sergeant type of manning up kinda thing. I'm trying to picture a kid telling Bobby Knight or Bear Bryant, "coach I'm sorry but I'm really tired. I'm gonna go home for awhile. Good luck til I get back." I don't imagine that conversation would go well for the kid lol
