Hear the Haters, but These are the Facts.

  • I posted this in my earlier thread, "what happens when Mitch....", but thought good to stand alone. I am not a hater. I am a realist. I run 2 successful businesses (thank goodness) on my own. I just want obstacles to be overcome and results palpable for all UK fans to enjoy. SO, here is what I put in the other thread.

Some people here are haters. That cannot be changed. They are that way in life I assume. Listen, I grew up with Joker playing here and loving him. He loves this place and frankly I will always think well of him and his love for UK. Here are the facts.

    1. Football keeps the lights on for so many of UK sports that they are too time consuming to list here.
    2. With dropping revenue, the improvements for any and all sports are scaled back or put on hold.
    3. Kentucky has never instituted any major investment and improvements to the football program here.
    4. Kentucky enjoys its revenue from the SEC and its lucrative contracts with networks and immediately funnels that back toward other sports or the university as a whole.
    5. Kentucky football is treated like a single mother who holds down 2-3 jobs and brings home the groceries and food for her children. She never indulges in herself and her well being.

Frankly, it is time to invest in the game that makes things happen here at UK. Basketball will always be our calling card. But, as a founding member of the Southeastern Conference, at least be active in attempting to improve the conference's signature sport.

But unlike your businesses Joker has to build this program. You didnt with your businesses. "YOU DIDNT BUILD THAT", to quote our president. lol

  • Yes, I know, my businesses were given to me by the federal government. HA. How I wish Thomas Jefferson was around to see this circus. I digress. GBB.

Think big changes are going to come with UK Football. Feel it in my bones this time. People need and deserve a winner. I cannot tell you or the tons of friends we have on here, how PROUD I was in 2007-2009. The LSU game meant as much to me as the NCAA title did this year. I know I may get bashed for that, but my family has been going there in the sun, rain and snow since my granddad was the team doctor under the Bear. We have lived and breathed UK Football and Bball. I was able to hold my head up high and got calls from friends all over the country who essentially said, "Hey, you guys are really, really good." Loved it, want to feel it again.

And frankly, UK should want to feel it again. Hate to use this term, but, truly there is some real truth to RP book. Success is a Choice. I believe that. So should UK.

Not here. LSU win a much bigger deal. In FB, u don't get penalized for merely hitting someone.

  • The bottom line is that someone can change things or someone can blame. We have an AD who look for excuses instead of making changes. Being a business man you take all the risk and get all the rewards. At UK the expectations are so low you get rewarded for seasons that everywhere else in the SEC would get you fired. Joker was delt a no win hand when he accepted the job.

To me the problem with the entire football program has never been just bad coaches, its been years and years of bad AD's who had no desire to do anything but go to basketball games. The AD's office for years was run by x-basketball guys.

Barnhart is no different. He hides from the "microwave fans" behind a pile of basketballs.

Well, Mr. Barnhart has a real opportunity here to figure out how to make UK competitive by being creative and figuring out a way to get Frankfort to work with them to help get bond money to improve and produce a product we all will be proud of. The ball rests firmly in his court.

  • Good thread and good points.

Some major problems/differences that I'd like to throw out for discussion.

A 501(c)(3) is not the same as a business.

The CEO and the Head of this particular operation of the conglomerate (Mitch & Joker) have been limited (severely?) by a Board & other power players and dynamics (state legislature, not being able to do own bonding, etc.).

No way I can put complete blame on the Divisional/Operational Head (Joker), or even the CEO, when it's those and the dynamics above them that need to change/restructure/re-engineer the most. Am I wrong?

#3 is false and #5 is your opinion.

In 99 UK made a massive renovation to the stadium adding suites and endzone seating. that was done through bonding from the state.

#2 is not true either. Nothing factual to back that up. In fact, with word that there will be some bonding capacity issued for athletics it could be the opposite of what you had.

    #1 is true.

Appreciate all opinions and options. Here is one thing I would like to know from you guys. If one was to be able to donate to the athletic department, can that individual be specific as to where the money should go? Love some feedback on that.

I believe that one is able to earmark donations for specific projects.

One might be able to earmark general donations for a specific sport but that would probably come out in the wash with money shuffled around to have the same totals.

Money donated to the k fund as part of getting ticket/seating priority cannot be earmarked (toward a particular sport or project) as far as I know.
