Here are the Penn St. Sanctions...

  • Hot off the presses from NCAA president Mark Emmert.... Penn State Penalties...

$60Million fine that goes to a charity for Child Abuse....

Banned from bowl games for 4 years

Scholarship reduction each recruiting year from 25 to 15 for the next 4 years.... That is 40 less scholarships..

NCAA vacates all wins from 1998 to 2011

Overall 5 year probation where they have to enter into an integrity Agreement with the conference and the NCAA and they'll have progress reports to insure that they are changing the culture in the athletic department...

They are also allowing players to transfer and be eligible to play at their other schools immediately...

Mark Emmert says that before they decided up on the sanctions they performed the most thorough investigation that the NCAA has ever done and it was apparent that all of these head up guys knew what was going on...

Why? They appear to be penalized for giving their football coach absolute control with no proper oversight. (Lack of institutional control) That is the biggest no no in on the books.

  • Here's the link to the NCAA Press Release that details the specifics of the sanctions.

  • Just curious if the NCAA has ever fined a member institution. 60M is STEEP! I wonder what the PSU response will be since normal protocol wasn't followed, they may argue that they were not allowed due process. Personally, this is what they probably deserved and is WORSE than a death penalty judgement. They get to play football but will get the living daylights beat out of them PLUS they vacate what has to be 100 or so wins which wipes the record books clean as well. I think the NCAA sent the message it wanted that's for sure.

  • They might as well drop down to Division 2.

According to Emmert, Penn State has already signed off on them. This isn't going to drag on through appeals, etc. It is a done deal as of now.

Penn St has already signed off on it. which to me means; they worked together on this.

Because reaches out to people not even involved in FB due to the financials of it all. What about the other sports(kids) that had nothing to do with this that will have there lives changed that aren't in sports that transfer easily due to low scholarship funding?

Don't have a problem with the loss of wins, bowls, etc., but 60Million? Geez.

I'm just thinking about the other sports student athletes.

I don't disagree with the unfortunate impact to the other sports. But the one to blame is Penn State, not the NCAA (IMO) for allowing the culture to grow until they could not reel it in.

Wow! Some people (TKE) are really shallow. They should have shut the whole football program. I guarantee these football players can transfer to other fine institutions. PSU is not what they thought it was. However, those kids that were raped in the PSU football facilities can never change that. If my son was a 4 or 5 star player and signed with PSU a couple of years ago he would never step foot in happy vally again. PSU is disgusting to its core. Administration, Athletic Department, Community, etc. People there still support that scumbag JoePa.

Penn state has probably already raised the 60 million.

Emmert made it very cLear that they must find other avenues of paying these fines rather than academic or non revenue sports beimf effected.

Yesterday i was on the fence on how i felt about the NCAA hammering Penn St. after it has come down i feel at peace With the decision.

It was football, wins, and an obsession with the all time wins record that caused a university (meaning thone who ran it) to turn a blind eye to the most heinous act a human can do. They chose football over protecting children. Imo their football program be damned.

Many people are have opinions based on the NCAA prior to this. The problem is there is no basis for comparison because there has never been something like this take place. The NCAA imo had to make a statement, a statement that says this is unacceptable. This decision was based on warning all other programs that putting a football program above human decency can never happen again.

Hadn't heard that PSU signed off but if they did, then that answers the due process part of my question. Again, in the end they probably got what they deserved and I'm not shedding a tear over this. Just a bit curious as to PSU options since this really was an unprecedented action by the NCAA.

$60 million is based on a season's football revenue.

This is not as severe as the death penalty, I don't think. But after thinking a little while, if there's no season, the revenue would just go somewhere else. This essentially gives child abuse victims and prevention advocates a year of benefit as if they had a major football program working for them instead of against him.

Of course it doesn't include the many millions the specific victims will be compensated.

It's really hard to see how they can do this w/o having an impact on the entire athletic department and the university at large. And the other financial shoe hasn't even dropped yet in all the pending civil suits, so I share in some of the concern that in trying to punish the football program, the ENTIRE university gets punished as well. 60 MILLION $$$$$$ ain't chump change and it's not like the football program has this type of money sitting around in a petty cash fund. It's got to come from somewhere!

    ukaveman

  • $60 million is a drop in the bucket compared to the civil suits that Penn State is going to have to wade through over the next 5-10 years.

Edit- and you can rest assured that the NCAA will slap tOSU and Miami on the wrist for showing equal lack of institutional control. Miami needs the same treatment. Well maybe not the fine.

  • In 20 minutes, the Big 10 is announcing their own punishment as well. My guess is they will reduce PSU's profit share and ban them from the Big 10 Network for a few yrs.

No need for the personal attack and you need to read my post. I'm not concerned about the FB program or the school, but the kids in other sports that are getting the shaft.

There are still a massive number of people who will continue to support the university (as they should) as well as the football program. As Hop posted earlier, they have probably have a plan in place for the 60 milli if infact hey don't have it already. Do i feel for the innocent student athletes at Penn St....yes. But the list of innocent people involved in this is gigantic and spreads well beyond sports.

Its just such a hear breaking and unprecedented tragedy that innocent people coming out unscathed was never going to happen.

I think a one year death penalty, or even two, would have been easier on the other athletic programs.

Per Emmert, PSU can't reduce funding to other sports to pay the fine. No need to feel sorry for athletes in other sports.

Big 10 is adding another $13 M in fines and withholding all bowl money shares from PSU. Wow.

  • Nobody has mentioned this yet, but what this will do to the Penn St. football program, the Big10, a/k/a "Legends and Leaders", just became significantly weaker.
