I Can't Believe No One Has Said Much about

Taking chances gets you Fran Curci and Hal Mumme. Being conservative gets you Bill Curry.

Eventually you have to acknowledge the fact that there is a larger problem with UK Football than just a simple matter of a coach or an athletic department. If it was just about writing a check or "hiring the right guy' we wouldn't be having this discussion right now. Frankly, I'm starting to suspect that UK doesn't belong in the SEC not because it can't compete but because the obstacles to success are so great, so ingrained and so wide ranging that either a. you need to be happy with a 7 win season and a minor bowl game in the BEST of seasons or b. find a new outlet for your Saturday's in the Fall.

This is the king of hindsight posts.

Hal mumme wasn't taking a chance. Hal mumme was a dumb ass hire That made no sense and was laughed at nationally.

Bill curry, at the time was viewed as a HOME RUN hire. Didn't turn out that way but it was viewed favorably.

I'm not saying I want Bobby. In fact, I don't. I was just curious if you had anyone in mind.

Yeah. I figured that's what you meant, so that last part wasn't directly aimed at you (or anyone in particular).

I don't know who the current up-and-comers are in the college football coaching world, but they're always out there. IF Kentucky was in the market for a new coach, I'm hopeful they'd exhaust all their resources to find the right guy -- and a guy of class and character.

He was. And I still think he would have been successful here if he was ever able to find an offensive coordinator who would stick around and commit to one system.

What mess are you speaking of? They're just coming out of the best sustained 5-6 years in the last 50-60 years of the program. They had a bad year. One. Give this staff an opportunity to bounce back, and if they fail, then we'll talk about other coaches.

All I'm telling you is there are qualified men of character and dignity coaching this game from coast to coast at many levels. There are PLENTY of people out there who can coach this game and do it the right way without disgracing the university. To suggest that there aren't, and that you have to turn to a scumbag of a human being like Petrino is embarrassing IMHO.

    This completely. Nailed it.

There are men of character capable of winning in the SEC who would coach at UK.

Oh Jeff do I hope you are right, and I'd be all for them if so! It just seems to me like every time the UK job comes open, we have a very hard time filling it, and end up settling in one way or another. If we are going to settle, I hope we at least settle for someone that can win, and not put us on probation. Those are the 2 biggest priorities to me. And for the record, I am still hopeful that Joker turns it around this year and this conversation becomes a mute point. I just don't see it happening.

JDrum, there's a sizable chunk of the UK fanbase that has the football IQ of a rock. This topic shouldn't come as a surprise.

I agree, and the rest of the fanbase has settled for sub-par football for nearly six decades, just waiting for the next coming of Bear Bryant.

You can slam me or whomever you want, I have no problem with that. The fact is that you can't deny that we still can't see the light at the end of the tunnel and never will as long as programs like Vanderbilt and Mississippi State are recruiting over us.

You guys act like Bobby Petrino invented the game. There were good coaches before him. There will be good coaches after him. And minus the douche baggage.

I'm almost in disbelief that this is an actual topic on this message board.

I sometimes wonder why some of our so called fan base as so much Loserville Envy. I would disband the football team and watch women's field hockey before I would have anything to do with Petrino.

Most of these guys have to be young. Howard made the UL program. That is the only coach that they have had ever that I wanted. You can thank CM for that. He hired Curry instead of Schellenberger.

How so? The last coaching search was done with the Football program under probation. What Coach wants to come into the SEC with his hands tied in recruiting and roster that's better suited for the MAC?

IMHO Mitch will make a solid hire if we go through a coaching change at the end of the next season.

I still have hope that Joker will get this thing back on track and I'll stick to my guns and say we get enough wins to get back to a Bow game in 2012.

  • ^Not hiring Scnelly was 2nd biggest mistake UK ever made, after letting Bear get away, I agree, but you are making an issue out of a non issue. The fact that Petrino coached at UL has absolutely no bearing on why anyone would want, or not want him to coach our team. You are making a meritless assumption here.

No my assumption is based on the fact that we always seem to have "fans" on here that think that UL is BAMA. They talk about how great JL was, then Turdtirino, and now Chuckles. We hear about how great they recruit, how good the O or D schemes are and so on.

I left the original CP and joined KI because of this lovefest and the UL Trolls. They are a mediocre team in a dreadful conference and I was against ever playing them in a year to year series. It has helped them and done nothing but hurt us.

Not slamming anyone in particular, just the portion of the fan base that thinks the answer lies in hiring a completely disgraced asshat of a human being to lead the program.

I don't know if that's necessarily true. Mitch had one of the biggest names in the game ready to sign on before Brooks, and Brooks turned out to be a very solid hire. Then he already knew he wanted Joker after that, so it's not like they had a search and got turned down by a bunch of guys.

It's an SEC gig. If and when UK ever needs another coach, they're not going to have any problem at all finding somebody to take it.

Personally, I think people need to cross their fingers and hope that Joker gets things turned around. He could be the long-term answer... IF he can survive this next season coming up.

Yep. Overall roster is in good shape. Just need a few breaks next year. It starts with game one.

I have a really hard time believing this is anything other than an urban legend. Future HOFer Bill Parcells wanted the job that relative nobodies Jim Donnan, Mike Kruczek and David Cutcliffe turned down? Another coaching giant, Doug Williams, interviewed, too.

Not urban legend at all. I had one of the guys who sat in on the proceedings give me play-by-play of how it went down. He didn't want it on the record, but every bit of it I was able to verify. Jerry Jones just spoiled it.

  • I don't doubt that people involved in the search, or who are close to people who were, want to think that Bill FREAKIN' Parcels was close to being the next coach at UK. What I do doubt, and very strongly at that, is that it was a REALISTIC possibility. I'm sure he said all of the right things, but Parcels was never going to be the next coach at UK when he was still the most sought after man In the NFL. It's like all of the UT fans who swear they were THIS CLOSE to getting Gruden or Dungy, but had to settle for Dooley instead.

It was all but finished had Jerry Jones not come along. This isn't Big Foot or the Loch Ness Monster. It was happening. A lot of it had to do with his love of horses and connections with some farms down here. That said, I don't think he would have lasted more than a couple of years. He was always a rambler with his eye on something else late in his career.

  • I don't recall which publication tht it was but, I read a quote that BP stated that he was going to take the UK job before JJ hit him up to go to Dallas.

I am for giving Joker not only this season, but next season as well to get this QB situation on track, and move this team in the right direction. We have an OC who needed an extra season to brace this defence and is on track with that now. Our offense needs to move the ball consistently and we will have the future QB in town this summer.

How long it takes to get this thing right will depend on that leadership. Staff and players alike will have to sacrifice to make it work, hopefully sooner than later. Lets worry about a new staff when that day comes. That day is not today.

Yeah. He acknowledged it somewhere. I couldn't find the link, though. There were too many hits on the keywords. I gave up. explode
