I may well be the only one...

  • ...but I would actually be fine if we missed on Wiggins, Gordn and Randle if I knew two of Goodwin, Poythress and WCS returning. I think all three will imporve greatly as sophmores. For that matter, they haven't really beenbad as freshmen, we've just been spoiled by Cal's first several classes. What we're seeing from these three is what you usually see frommortal freshmen. I would trade some of the glitz from shiny new freshmen for the lessons these three have learned as freshmen.

  • Problem is, that's not going to happen. They are likely all three gone, but at best one comes back from what we're hearing.

  • ESPN NBA draft analyst Chad Ford updated his draft prospect rankings today and he's got Nerlens #1, Alex #10, Archie #11 and WCS #23. He also notes that once they get into the draft workouts, many NBA scouts and GMs expect WCS to move up into the lottery.

    Don't expect to see any of these guys back for UK next season.

    I didn't read it as anyone is likely to come back. I took it that at best one might. I just think weight as well forget all of them. Wiltjer, too... And maybe Harrow.

    Besides the ones I listed above, Chad Ford had Harrow ranked #83 and Kyle not in his top 100.

  • Noel, Poythress, and Goodwin are gone. WCS will "test the waters" for about a week and when he does move up to the lottery, and he will, he will also be gone.

    If Harrow and Wiltjer leave, then it is simply because they do it on their own accord. I don't see Wiltjer going anywhere. Harrow, while I expect him to be back, I don't know whether or not he will because I'm not sure how he will take to sitting behind a freshman PG.

  • Last season I "didn't mind" when Shabazz picked UCLA because I knew UCLA wasn't a threat to win a title and he was only going to be there for a year before he went to the pros. I thought we had enough to win the title without him...boy was that stupid of me.

    Our current team with Shabazz would be a whole different animal and we wouldn't have six losses...maybe three at most, and we'd be a hot, trending, dangerous team. He is the killer we need this season...but alas he's in westwood.

    Let's not kid ourselves...we want and will need Wiggins because only one thing will matter next season...hanging #9. That's the expectation and Wiggins will take us a very long way toward that.

    I agree with the great PG comment (Harrow was at least starting to play solid over the past month but took a bit of a step back) but this team has been pretty darn good on the defensive end for the most part. The much bigger problem is defensive rebounding. Without the second chances teams would be shooting a lower percentage than the already low percentage they are shooting against UK.

    Unfortunately for these kids, they are naturally compared to last year's team. Few freshman come into college with the drive and will of MKG and Davis. We got spoiled. But more often than not these kids are going to have to go through a learning process of understanding how they have to work in preparation to play and then how the have to translate that to the court in games. As a result, we will likely have many more guys like Terrence Jones than MKG or Davis.

    Most of the kids will eventually get it because Cal looks at character as well as talent. Hopefully it will be like Teague and they get it before it's too late in their freshman year. In the meantime, we will continue to get frustrated because they will seldom get it soon enough to satisfy our expectations.

    K. Wiltjer is not going anywhere. He is not on anyone's radar. There are 20 K. Wiltjer's in college basketball this year. But fans only see the ones of the team they are rooting for.

    Borrow money from a pessimist -- they don't expect it back.

    The only one I've heard anything about possibly coming back is Cauley-Stein. The rest are likely gone, unless something unforeseen happens.

  • Am I the only one who thinks WCS is nowhere near ready for the NBA? Before his surgery he was okay for a freshman, but nowhere near a polished post player. He might end up going to the NBA, but it would be a huge mistake for him to make, IMO. The NBA has a hundred guys with his size and athleticism. He needs at least another year in college to even learn how to play the game of basketball. Hasn't he only been playing the sport for a little over 2 years now?

    Wiltjer would get drafted if he leaves just for his shooting and scoring ability alone. I'm not convinced that he will make that move yet.

    Noel & Goodwin were in the draft before they ever even got here.

    Harrow I'm unsure of. He could possibly improve his draft status by playing next year as a backup 1 & 2.

    Poythress is at a crossroads right now. If he continues to improve on what he's been doing these last 2 games then he's gone for sure.

    The problem with predicting what these guys will do this year is the strength of this year's draft. It's not going to be a particularly strong and deep one, so some guys will get drafted higher than they would in other years. If I was a player I wouldn't just be looking at getting drafted, though. I'd be more concerned with being able to stay in the league for 10 or more years once I got there. So I'd want to make sure I'm ready to make a team and prove valuable enough to get that second contract.

I'll probably get grief for saying this, but, these guys who come to UK should know full well that they're going to be surrounded by other great players and the way I look at it, let the best man win, not the new shiny penny, simply because it's new and shiny.. Not all these great 5 star players are going to be ready for the NBA after 1 year and shouldn't have to feel pushed out the door to make way for the new guys.. They should be able to feel comfortable if they want to return and feel they'll be given a fair shake to play.. If I recall, Cal never promises a kid a starting spot or a certain # of shots, so, I would hope that none of the current players feel pressured to move on..If that's the case, I think we'll have more problems down the road than success..

    Honestly the twins will come with more grit every game while Ryan can be beaten physically on some plays. I don't think the twins will start just because of their reputations, talent will be the main reason.

    i understand what your sayin and in principle agree...but...there isnt one freshman point guard that we have had that harrow would start over...wall, knight, teague, and andrew harrison are all better then harrow and thats not a knock on harrow at all i just names a top 5, a top 10, a first rounder and harrison will be top 10 if not top 5...so all in all your right with your opinion but it doesnt work here with the guys named above

    Harrison is better as a High School Senior than Harrow is now. It's not even close. Oh, and don't forget there is a 4-6 inch height difference as well.

    Idont think anyone but Kyle will return but if there is someone else to come back that would be great. Wiggins I think is slipping away from KYs hands as time rolls on. Gordon I thought at one time was going to commit to UK but I think now that he stays out west and goes to Arizona. Randle to me is the biggest mystery of the spring b/c he has been pretty tighted lipped about his recruiting like Wiggins has been. He says good things about all the schools left on his list and if you take his latest USA Today blog you would think NC State would be his choice but Im just not sure about him now. Fla and KY are right in there for him but dont disregard Texas and NC State. If we get 1 of these guys that would be great but next years team will be great anyway and you add Wiltjer to the other perimeter players coming in next year then you have a great team all the way around.

    I feel a little sorry for Archie. I am not sure if he came back he would have the minutes he is getting this year. The 2 spot looks crowded with Aaron Harrison and James Young coming in. However, Archie isn't anywhere near ready to in the Association. I am worried he finds himself spending significant time in the D league next season. He's in a piickle no matter what he decides IMO. Alex should come back if the Cats miss on Randle and Gordon. He isn't ready either, and I don't see Lee's presence as big of a factor on minutes as I do the two guards for Archie.

  • I feel real sorry for Archie the future millionaire. Give me a break. How many out of control ultra athletic 18 year old 2 guards have gone on to the NBA and made millions? Archie is just like those guys.

    That's a good point, I shouldn't "feel sorry" for him. But I think the main issue still remains, IMO he's not in the ideal situation. He will need to be drafted by a team that will be willing to give him A LOT of time to develop an NBA game.
