I sorta cringed at some questions asked at presser

  • It was basically a whole lot of , "we suck, so why did you come here?" I was honestly thinking, "are you trying to make him re-think his decision?"

  • I know they were most likely very cringe worthy but I thought UK & Mitch out kicked their coverage with this hire and I am sure I am not alone so thus the line of questioning. Just my 2 cents

  • Yeah, you are probably right. It just seemed awkward at the time. I am among those who think this is an outstanding hire.

  • I thought Alan Cutler made an ass out of himself with his question. I thought most of them were honest questions, but Alan's seemed agenda driven.

    Keepin in fresh since 1986.

  • Boys if he can't handle those questions, you have bigger problems....

    What was his question?

  • I don't remember his question. I think it was the second question asked if you want to check it out.

  • Alan cutler has become a "characture" of himself. He's a joke.

    Here was the exchange....

(Statement) Q. Coach Stoops, everybody in this room, even the media in this room, wants you to succeed.
    MARK STOOPS: Thank you.

    Q. Can you explain what you need to do to change a losing culture, which is what this is, and turn it into a winning culture, which will make all True Blue fans happy?
MARK STOOPS: First of all we're going to embrace the process. We're going to attack each and every day. What I'm worried about right now is meeting with our players tomorrow morning, and we're looking forward to going ahead.
Really not interested in what happened before. We will embrace the past, all the past great players, the past teams. But we're worried about going forward. We're going to do that.
Again, it's a process. We're not too worried about the results right now, we're worried about the process. That's getting my message to the players tomorrow morning, then getting out there and putting together a quality staff and moving forward.

  • I was listening on the radio and wasn't sure who asked that question, but he would have been my guess.

It's not so much the questions themselves, just the timing. They just seemed inappropriate for the setting, kinda putting a damper on the excitement of hiring a new coach.

  • Sounds like a legitimate question to me.

  • I don't think reporters always articulate questions the way they'd like but I also think it's well within bounds to ask a new coach why he feels like he can win at a place where not many people have and why he sought out this particular job when there were numerous others open. People want to hear his plan and why he wants to be here.

This is what I thought after I heard the question.

A COMPLETELY inappropriate question, that I would have loved to have heard asked, would be something along the lines of, "Except for Guy Morriss who went on to coach at Baylor, ex-Kentucky head coaches have not typically gone on to similar or better jobs after their tenure at UK has concluded. Did that worry you in accepting the position?"

  • Another minor issue, but a pet peeve of mine, is the press calling him Mark. What's wrong with calling him Coach?

    I wouldn't dream of not calling a coach a coach--even guys I've known for 30 years--if I know them as a coach they're still Coach.

Do you think Stoops wasn't aware of the suckiness before he was asked about it? lol Not exactly world beater info letting Stoops know we sucked.

  • You have this right, Matt.

It is a very pertinent question.....Why did you seek out Mitch Barnhart to inquire about the Kentucky job?

The UK program has attained modest success but never sustained it success for any length of time. Mark Stoops has confidence he can be the leader to change the culture.

  • It wasn't so much the questions that were being asked, as much as the timing, and especially the tone used when asking the questions.

I think that's a pretty simple one to answer, at least for me, he's not my coach. I don't call anyone else by their profession, nor do most people. To me, they are grown men just like me. I called Rich Brooks, Rich. I called Joker Phillips, Joker. I called Tubby Smith, Tubby. I called Billy Gillisipie, Billy. And I call John Calipari either John or Cal. JMHO.

Fair enough, although I think most people do use such honorifics in some situations. I didn't hear anybody holler out "Hey Eli."

I do use those kinds of titles for certain people by profession--political people (Mayor, Judge, etc.), preachers, doctors, and, for me, coaches. It's just a term of respect I was brought up with.
