If Patrick Towles is NOT able to return this year

Can he still get a medical hardship or redshirt for this year? Or would it just be a lost year?

They could apply for one. Since he only played a couple of series and was only in because of injuries to others, they might be able to win that argument.

I would say a RS would be easily obtained/granted.

First I hope it is minor and he can come back. If he cannot come back and he loses a whole year of eligibility for a couple possessions in the middle of a losing season.....ouch.

IMO, he should absolutely sit out the rest of the season and obtain a medical redshirt to preserve the year of eligibility. Just use Newton and Whitlow. Towles is going to be very, very good for us. No need to waste a year on this mess.

Joker will screw this up if allowed. A real coach can make Towels an AA. Think of the future with a new coach Towels, and a system that wins.
No brainer.

Depends on how bad the ankle is. If he is good to go this week or next, we should continue to play him for experience. It was looking like Max had the spot wrapped up for the next couple of years, but I'm not convinced he will be the same after another dislocated throwing shoulder and torn ligaments in his ankle.

I would say there is about a 99% chance Towles returns and plays.

The coach sitting him out for the rest of the season will not meet the medical red-shirt requirements, IIRC. I believe the standard is that he must miss the rest of the season due to injury. IIRC some other teams (can you say Bama and Saban?) had a habit of having players declared unable to play for the remainder of the season to gain that medical red-shirt but I believe the SEC may have placed tighter restrictions on the ability to gain it. However, I could be mistaken.

High ankle sprain could be a week or a month, with these you never know.

Since the injury occurred during the first six games and he has played less than 30% of the season, then yes - he is eligible for a medical redshirt, provided he doesn't play anymore this season.

It boils down to whether or not they can convince a MD to say that the injury cost him the rest of the season.
