If you could have either....

  • an explosive offensive FB team or a dominant defensive team, which would you prefer?
Back in the days of Curci & Claiborne it looked like the emphasis was more on a strong defense with a conservative running game. Both coaches were quite successful with this philosophy.
Then comes the days of Mumme & Brooks when scoring points was the wave of the future (moreso Mumme than Brooks). Again, both coaches had success in that style of offense.

But in order to compete (or even just be competitive) in the SEC a strong defense is almost mandatory. But does an "open it up" offense generate enough ifan nterest that it brings back the season ticket holders that jumped ship these last 3 years?

I guess it goes back to the old saying,: "Offense sells tickets but defense wins games".

    Which do you prefer?

I believe your statement above is correct. Alabama not only has a good defense but a well balanced offense that scores a lot more points than people realize. I think it takes both to have a consistent winner and hope we get a coach that stresses both if we want to play in the SEC.

  • A shut down defense with an efficient offense. I don't have to see my offense put up 50 points and 600 yards of total offense to be happy. Give me an offense that is balanced and can put up 24-28 a game (one TD a quarter average), and a defense that locks other teams down.

  • Offense is great, but alone, it just gets people who don't understand football overly excited. Defense wins championships! I don't watch UK to be merely entertained. I want to win!

  • I want a shut down defense and an offense that will put the opposing defense in a living hell. Is that too much to ask for!?

    Keep Calm & Stoops On..

  • If UK could do it.....which I doubt they'd ever be able to....I would want how Bama plays now. I love a balanced offense that is more heavily slanted to the run and an absolute dominant defense. Michigan used to have teams like this during the Bo yrs also.

Though, I would guess that most UK fans would want the offense. I believe that most UK fans are basketball first fans so they would prefer to see "a basketball game on the gridiron." I think most would rather see a 45-42 win rather than a 28-10 win.

  • Look at the best team on college football (Bama) and that well answer your question.

Give me a stifling defense and an adequate offense any day of the week. Better yet give me a defense that scores points and an offense on the field that scores 17 points. That's the thing for me.

  • Defense

  • Are you talking the score is 6-3 or 3-0 a lot, sometimes we win and sometimes lose then I would rather have a high powered offense.

If your talking scoring say 21-10 is defense then I would say most people would take that.

If yourvsaying will be like Alabama this year then I think everyone woukd take that style of play. If you are

Talking our defense is awsome and our offense struggles to get past midfeild then I would rather have offense and defense.

If our record is the same either way then give me high scoring

  • An efficient offense that isn't one dimensional (run OR pass) and a suffocating defense.

  • Takes balance to win consistently in the SEC IMO.

  • Give me a hard hitting, nasty attitude defense that holds opponets to under 20 on a regular basis..paired with an offense that establishes the run game..then looks to throw the ball downfield when the D is stacking the box with 8or9 guys, an offense that can slow a game down if needed..eat clock when leading by more than 14. Im a purist i guess..I get more excited when a LB knocks the snot out of somebody, or a saftey hits a wr so hard he not only drops the ball..but his girlfriend feels it, than i do for tds..even long ones. One of my favorite plays in the past 5 years? When Dicky Lyons knocked that all-american LSU SS into the next time zone in the cats upset over the eventual BCS champs.

  • I want a well balanced overall team but if you want excited fans filling the seats at CWS you dang sure better have an exciting offense. The average joe is far more interested in offense as are the people watching tv across America.

  • You have to have a little bit of both clearly. So I'd love to have a great D and a dominant running game. Just like the Bama's and LSU's of the world. That how you win championships. Just push people around up front on both sides of the ball. A little Harbaugh ball.

  • Defense. If you have a shutdown defense you can stay in every game.

  • Winning sells a lot more tickets over time than just offense. Had Mumme stayed and continued to win only 2-3 games a year, attendance would have fallen way off. Agree with the comments on balance. These days you have to be able to both run and pass, and defend, and not lose the special teams battles.
