If you had your DRUTHERS... Pitino or Calipari?

  • Pitino was as hot as any name coaching in the mid-90s, but the game has slowly but steadily passed him by.

Just don't think you can win at the highest level in today's day and age pressing for 40 minutes and shooting a ton of 3's. Teams and coaches eventually adapted to that.

Now, with the one and done rule the way it is, you mostly win by having the most talent on the floor. Calipari has mastered that art better than anyone. He attracts talent, he develops talent, he adapts to the talent he has, he wins.

    Wash, rinse, repeat.

I agree to a certain extent. . . but teams like Butler, and VCU, among others have had success and they are no where close to having the most talent on the floor. . . There are multiple ways to win today IMO. . .

Good lord, how did you EVER become a MARINE?....No decency, no respect for authority, no dignity........your parents must be soooooo proud of you.

Well, whether they are proud of you or not, Jarhead. I certainly am!!!!

    USMCatFan

  • That is exactly how I became an outstanding Marine. haha. Remember what Eleanor said...“The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!”

Speaking of I was just about to email you. We did our best reproduction of your chili tonight and it turned out pretty damn good. Thanks for the recipe and lettin us hang out. We had a blast. Semper.

Yeah, I remember Druthers before they became DQ. I think I liked it better. DQ sucks, except for their ice-cream.

In all seriousness, I always come down on the side of the guy who can get the most talent. That's Cal.

Talent will trump Xs & Os in almost all cases.

  • And not that Cal's bad on Xs and Os. I think he's very underrated in that regard, especially on D.

Very very underrated. DEFENSE not PGs are the staples of his teams.

"I'd rather go to Druther's restaurant"... It was bought out by DQ
Yes, I believe their kids meal was the andy dandytale or something like that. I always prefered DQ to Druthers.

Remember Dairy QUEEN? It was eventually bought by Burger King.

And yet, didn't UK have the #1 overall defense the last two years under Cal?

Weird huh. Lol. No one ever talks about the D Cal's teams play. All they wanna talk about is PGs and while its true he does a great job with guards, he gets very little credit for what he's done with bugs

    tommy

  • what's he do to bugs? Does he eat them or squash them? shrug

  • Yeah, he is an underrated coach when it comes to development, defense, x's & o's, and simply being the master of getting these egos to gell into his overall system.

It's a FAR cry from what we saw under Tubby, who, ironically was considered an elite defensive coach.

In his defense, I think Tubby's teams were excellent when he had the right type of guys. The 2003 team was as good a halfcourt D team as I have ever covered. But the fatal flaw of the ball-line defense was how it played Russian Roulette with teams from the 3-point line while doubling-down on post players who didn't require help. On a given night, ANY marginally talented team could get hot from 3 and threaten to take down the Cats. (Penn State, USC, UAB, etc, etc). You don't see that with Cal. He's on guy's ass if they give up a 3 while not giving anything up inside, either.
