In All Honesty, your Joker Phillips... So what do you do?

  • fylm said...

    1) Take the bye week to have Randy Sanders clean out his office. Be sure to slam the door on his butt for running off Brinson's recruits. (Mossakowski and Russell)

    2) Take your offense back and play your talent instead of a petty OC's favorites. Get Clemons, Gainer, and George the ball.

    3) Move the pocket and get the RB's, TE's, and FB involved in the passing game. If the WR's can't catch a cold how about looking at other positions?

    4) Develop wrinkles in the Wildcat with Newton. Honestly, he's probably the best athlete on the offense.

    5) Do not hire another high school coach to replace Sanders. Please endeavor to find a legitimate collegiate assistant instead of a guy to whom you owe a favor.

    This. I was hoping to hear by this time tonight that Sanders has been fired, but deep down inside I know that's not going to happen. Sanders is just an extension of Joker in that he is running Joker's system, but with poor ability in playcalling. I doubt Joker is going to ever bring in an innovative OC and turn him loose to do his thing. I think he enjoys having his "yes man" buddy at OC instead of someone who may actually prove another system would put UK in a better position to win ballgames. He made that move with the DC. Now let's see if he ever does it with the OC. My money says he won't.

  • What I would like to see no later than early this upcoming offseason:

    - Sanders gets shown the door;

    - Joker bring in a young and/or innovative OC who can recruit his ass off and who employs a system/scheme that will attract better talent;

    - Move Tee to QB coach where he belongs;

    - Hire a real WR coach who has that "juice" on the recruiting trail;

    - Get rid of Brown (finally) and hire a legit DB coach who can also recruit like hell and teach DB's how to make a play on the ball and how to keep from getting beat like a drum every time down the field.

    If each of the above moves is made, I have no problem with Joker staying on board next year. I would also like to see Brooks hired as Director of Football Operations and given the keys to launch a massive fundraising campaign for football. With all of the talk he has been doing about how UK football needs more funding and a financial commitment for improvements, maybe he should put his money where his mouth is and kick it off with a large donation of his own and then hit the road throughout the state to get donors to contribute with him.

  • Since many seem to prefer a spread offense and want Leach, how about Neal Brown instead? He is the OC at Texas Tech. He is a Danville native and the Big 12s days are numbered, IMO.

    @ mjdotson
    Sanders and Brown would be two coaching "losses"
    Hiring an OC, a WR coach, and a DB coach would be three replacement hires.
    We can't have that many coaches,

    This is the most sensible and reasonable post I've seen thus far irt Joker, his future and the state of UK football right now. Kudos!! If all these things are done, then I'm all in for a 3rd year and lets see what happens then. It's all about accountability and when you are making 6 figures on your paycheck, you damn well better earn it! Joker has a choice to make and how he goes about it over the next several of weeks will determine his future as UK's HC.

    I like this idea.

    Lets pray this team doesn't lay a egg (after two weeks of practice) vs JSU. If we do it will be hard for MB to do anything to keep fans coming back unless "Major" changes are made.

  • Coach Brooks has sold his Jessamine County home and will be moving to Oregon, on a permanent basis.

    He has made his positive contributions to Kentucky football and has retired. Retired means retired.

    FYI...."Put his money where his mouth is" is a statement I find offensive.

  • Spread the field, open the middle take the RS off Bookie and use him some I mean what is he saving him for

  • I think most have hit it on the head here. Go unconventional. I think most of us with our "fan" caps on would like to see a 5 wide-chuch the ball around offense. But if the triple option moves the ball, then run it. And keep it as simple as possible. It's pretty clear the guys getting most of the snaps can't process all the stuff that's in the current playbook.

    With respect to the comments on Brooks, it was more of a "perfect world" wish list item for what I would like to see done. Realistically, I know he's not coming back out of retirement. You can tell from following him on Twitter and in interviews that he values the retirement life with his family. That said, it wouldn't hurt to reach out to him to see if he would be interested in a non-residential (meaning he wouldn't have to have an office at UK or be around all that much) advisory role re: football and fundraising. I doubt he would go for it, but just throwing it out there.

    As for my comment being offensive to you or anyone else, I certainly didn't mean for it to come across that way. It was more of a thought in light of the fact that he has been more than open about what he believes to be shortcomings in the facilities and overall commitment to the program by UK and/or UKAA. I usually don't like to hear anyone people complain about things like that when they have the ability, both from a financial and respect/power standpoint, to make a change or to guide others to do so. My thought was that if he would make a financial contribution and then push for others to join him, it would probably go a long way towards setting the wheels in motion. Given what all he did for the program and his clear interest in seeing the necessary changes happen, I would love for nothing more than to see him as the catalyst for those changes and to have something (be it the long-awaited recruiting room or something else) named in his honor.

  • Coach Brooks' current relationship with Joker Phillips and Mitch Barnhart would exclude him from such a role.

    It would only be fair to get it from his mouth (which you won't.....not his style), but I would say he is none too pleased with either man's recent role in the UK football debacle.

  • 1 Review the whole playbook and find out what we are best at and scrap all else. Simplify and modify as needed.

    2 Identify the best personel to execute those plays

    3 Practice those plays until we can execute them in our sleep

    3 Add new plays (ie Run the hurry up we used to out of the shotgun. It wasn't a true spread formation but it did spread the defense out and make them cover the whole field rather than line up 8 in the box and basically dicatate that we beat them with the pass.) Part of our problem is that we are letting defenses dictate our offense. It should be the other way around.

  • If I am Joker I start taking over the playcalling like now, and get up in the box so he can see everything going on and still be the HC.
    It will be a miraculous change, I am hoping.rockon
