In-game twitter posts from Commonwealth

  • Fellow Cat fans,

My seats in Commonwealth are on the UK side and a few rows up directly behind the defense's bench. This is my first season with twitter and a buddy suggested that folks might be interested in the sights and sounds we see during the games. Honestly, it's one of the most interesting parts of the game is we can see and hear everything that's going on over there during the game. If anyone speaks above a whisper you can hear it from where were are. I love it.

Anyway, I'll get started during the first game and we'll see how it goes. It won't be a play by play or anything but when something interesting happens (injuries, Rick Minter going nuclear, Randall Burden working on a new dance, etc.) on the defensive side I'll tweet it out.

My twitter handle is @LeeWeatherly if you're interested. Go Cats.

  • Good luck, I don't get service for squat during games at CWS. If you can get through, I'll bring some updates from the offensive side of the ball.

    80 Proof

  • Good luck. I can rarely send/receive texts, access internet or make calls at CWS and I have AT&T.

  • 80, I'm on Verizon now and all my friends that have it have told me that it's very good during games. Last year on AT&T my blackberry could not even send or receive texts from 2 hours before the game until about an hour afterwards. I had to use my wife's verizon phone to call or text anyone. It was horrible.

I'm hoping that things will be the same way this year on Verizon. We'll see.

What's your twitter so I can follow you?

  • From everything I've heard at CWS everyone has cell phone issues on gameday, but typically AT&T is the WORST. . . Seems like with others you might not get through on the first attempt, but you can get through. . . But with AT&T it just ain't gonna happen, lol

  • Great idea, Lee. As always I tweet plenty during games from the press box and I try not to keep it play-by-play. I have to tweet scoring plays or big plays for users following me on there but I usually try to keep it strictly to observations. I suspect it would be good to follow my tweets as a companion to the game and not just as a substitute.

A tip for AT&T users: If you're on an iPhone or any 3G-capable device, a sometimes-successful way to get around the jam is to turn off your 3G and try to connect on the edge network. Fewer users are on it now so it's less jammed on game days than the 3G signal.

I bet something similar would work for users on other networks, but I only know from experience on AT&T.

Whoops! Was it that much of a secret? Most of my friends are tech nerds (and I'm no slouch) so I forget what circles I'm in. headslap

  • This could be a shortlived experiment if that's the case. Maybe I'll use smoke signals.

  • I sit at the very top row of the stadium at the 50 and I would rate my verizon service as no better than average. Of course I would have killed for average when I had AT&T.

  • When I had Verizon I got much better gameday service than my AT&T plan now.

Also i don't know if this still stands true but black berrys when I had one used a more compressed data format to push it through the network, whereas the iPhone texts were larger data packets and had a much much much harder time getting through,

Farmy, the issue probably isn't packet size or bandwidth. It's more like the 70K users all trying to access a limited number of nodes(antennae) local to Commonwealth.

Using the Edge network probably works better because each node can support more Edge users than 3G users. Plus, until JP let the cat out of the bag not many people were trying to use Edge.

  • I remember people always complaining about the service at CWS on their phone, myself and all the foreign students all had absolutely crappy cingular pay as you go phones and we always had no problem calling or texting during games lol!

You wouldn't have that option now. AT&T bought Cingular.

I should have pointed out earlier also that each provider (AT&T, Verizon, etc.) has their own nodes around Commonwealth. I have no idea how many each company has. Verizon could either have more nodes servicing the area around CWS or maybe there are just fewer Catfans that use Verizon.

  • just fyi, I have the Motorola droid 2 global and wife has iphone, both stink at CWS

  • I have the LG Ally and it worked like a charm. I was taking pictures and texting and posting them to facebook all throughout the game.

  • What type of phone (IPhone, Droid, BBerry) you have really doesn't matter. What matters is what network you are using. Last year at least, if you used AT&T, you probably had little to no service during the game. Those that used Verizon report doing much better.

I could even tell at the tailgate when it was getting close to game time. My phone service started to fail. Which was kind of creepy considering I was the "On-Call" for work during one or two of those games.
