Is it true Joker is going to use more of the spread Off???

  • Over the past month or so I've read a couple people mention that Joker and CO will be using more of the spread OFF this year... I don't know if this is a hunch or if Joker and Randy have actually said this. There are a couple things I love about UK using more of the spread however I have my concerns. I was one of the few 4500 that went to the SG and I did notice there wasn't many "I" sets or 2 Te sets. Any good qb can thrive in the Spread, it's been done with drop back passers, and of coarse dual threats. I do prefer athletic QB's. The spread allows a qb to see the entire defense and it also allows for a super quick dink and dunk style, similar to how we played with Hartline. I love Randy's play calling when we are in the wild-cat, but the zone-read and dink and dunk are two very different schemes.

    Are we going to the Spread to help speed PT development??? IDK, I hope so, we need depth at QB and if he's ready to take the job then i'm fine with it, however I hope we don't see him every down for a while. He's a super smart and talented kid there are still a million things he will have to learn to do well in Randy's OFF, that's a fact. I do love the idea of UK becoming a physical zone-read running team like we were in the TN game...I really think part of the reason we beat TN was due to us wearing them down with the ground game, just imagine if we could have passed the football... No one hates a up-tempo spread offense more than a SEC front 7...

    The "spread" is an over used term to describe offenses.

    Just because you line up in the shot gun doesn't mean you are a "spread" team. Just because you line up under center it doesn't mean you are a smash mouth team. Consider that Spurrier refused to use the shotgun for the first half of his tenure at florida.

    We won't be a "spread" team. We are a "pro-style" team in our truest sense. Joker and Randy prefer the pro-style offense that we saw in Hartline's senior year and the Woodson years. Our staff now thinks that we have the qb's in smith and towles and the receivers to return to this offense. Considering that our most successful season were in the pro-style offense we should be excited.

    We won't be a 4-wide offense. We haven't been under joker/sanders.

  • Don't think we need to go entirely to spread type system, but I sure would like us to use a more up-tempo execution with our schemes. No more huddle/line up/stand up and look to sideline/relay playcall/rush and snap before 40 second clock gets to 00:00. Just call the darned play and line up and run it. Hate the weak mindset of having to adjust and react to what the defense does, snap the ball quickly with a play you have confidence will work and make THEM react to YOU.

  • I'm just excited to see this year's team take the field...
    Seeing all the people clad in blue making their way to the stadium
    The smells of steaks, burgers, and hotdogs on the grill
    Everybody is so friendly, you just walk by someone's tailgate and they're offering you food
    Walking thru the concourse and the excitement kicks up a notch
    Coming up the steps into the stadium and you get that first look at the field
    The music is blaring, the guys are out warming up
    The PA guy comes over the speakers telling you how long to game time....

    Man...it can't get here soon enough!

  • A great many of the plays run at the Blue/White game had two TE's in the formation. Most of the time the second TE was utilized as an H-back.

    Thats what I was thinking. I think he's relevant to this discussion because he is a spread type QB. Are we gonna try some Wildcat with him or are we gonna put him at WR and or both? He could be along with a few other guys coming in the X factor for this season.

  • was a guy who committed to us before he even set foot on campus because of his relationship he built with Tee, and then stuck with us even after Tee left. I believe is a perfect fit for the Spread, Wildcat, whatever you wanna say. But when Cobb ran it it was a big part of the offense and keeping teams off balance because Cobb could throw it or pass it. Whitlow brings that ability IMO

  • I would like to see us go to a variation of the spread, but not a pure zone read spread like we saw at Auburn and some other places the last few years. There are a TON of variations of the spread and they can be VERY effective, especially when you need to get the ball out of the QB's hands and to the playmakers out in space as quickly as possible (i.e. when you don't have an OL built to hold blocks for an eternity). I think a quicker tempo offense like that, especially one that would put Smith and/or Towles back in shotgun a large perencentage of the time, would really help play to our anticipated strengths. Hell, even Newton did a lot better when he was put in shotgun. I know Joker and Sanders like the pure pro style offense better, but sometimes you just can't keep trying to force a square peg into a round hole.

  • Their tempo was done to shorten the game in my opinion. When the offense is clicking they ran many more plays but if you have one of the worst offenses in the country and one of the lowest 3rd down conversion percentage you start to think about giving the defense a few minutes to get their breath. Honestly, I expect a much better team this year. I think the talent will be better at most key positions. Joker needs a break through to a 7 win season and no mega-blowouts. It's possible.

  • Doesn't getting to the LOS quickly mainly prevent the defense from substituting? I think perhaps last year they were trying to get to the line quick to prevent subs and then calling the play, due to inexperience at QB and on the OL due to injuries. I guess this gives you a chance to take advantage of percieved mismatches. If the O is more familar with the D reads etc then the look to the sidelines is not necessary and maybe makes the up tempo O even more effective. Am I wrong?

  • I gotta say, when Whitlow does a planned run, he reminds me a bit of Cobb. He gets a step on the defense just the way CObb did for us, but he also has a better arm. I could really see him doing some great things here if he can bring his skill set to the next level.

  • I do not want anything to do with a "spread" O. Our O is fine when we have the personnel to run it.

  • It helps to have a passing attack if you want to run a lot of spread. We didn't have that until Smith came in and started putting some "touch" on the ball; then the "lousy" receivers started catching a few balls. With the QBs we'll have next season, and some additional receivers, I'm of the opinion our passing will be much improved. Now we can spread the field and run the ball. Since we won't have a super great RB, the passing game has to help the running game for some balanced offense.
