***JON HOOD WANTS YOU TO KNOW 'SCOTTY'S STORY' (Exclusive)***

  • Scott Schaefer idolized Jon Hood the basketball player, but it was Schaefer who made the biggest impact as their relationship developed into a story of friendship and hope.

I'll warn you, this is VERY long, but if you have some time I think it's worth the read for everyone, not because I wrote it but because of who Scott Schaefer was, what he taught people and how you can affect people without ever knowing it. The story also says a lot about the type of person Jon Hood is, although Jon didn't want this to be about him. And it's not. It's about Scott. But I can tell you how emotional Jon got talking about Scott and their relationship in a 75-minute interview I had with him a few weeks back.

Anyway, please check it out if you have time. It's worth it. I learned a lot simply by listening to people talk about Scott.

Now to figure out an excuse for my bloodshot eyes...

  • Awww. Im literally in tears right now. Im a 6'4 325lb former OL/DL country boy and I am overcome by tears.

Thank you Matt..for bringing such a sad, yet heartwarming story to light for us. My prayers go out to the Schaefer family and to little Scotty himself..who I know is up there rooting his Cats on!! Such a intelligent and brave lil man.

Stories like this one helps keep things in perspective.. we too often get caught up in the thrill of sports..and take for granted many things that shouldn't be taken for granted. Such a huge heart in such a small kid..I wish I were half as brave as Scotty.

Scotty Schaefer...we all love you little man..you will forever be a part of the best family on earth..the Big Blue Nation!

It IS worth the time Matt. Thank you SO much for sharing this..and if you can..please tell Jon we thank him as well for sharing such a personal and inspirational story. I love sports as much as anyone..Uk sports in particular..and football above all..but stories like this are so much more important. Scotty's Story transcends any relative importance sports could ever hope to achieve..the BBN lost a true member in lil Scotty Schaefer. Without Jon and you Matt..sharing this..I wouldnt have even known about Scotty..and I want to thank you from the deepest part of my heart for sharing this touching and emotional story of life, love, and loss.
This story helps one to reflect upon what really matters in life.. and anyone should benifit in some small way from it's reading whether spiritually or emotionally.
    Thanks again Matt..best read EVER.

  • If you are not in tears after reading that then you may have a problem.

Matt, please pass along to Jon Hood a special thank-you from the BBN for sharing Scotty's story with us.

  • Thanks for the kind comments everyone. It's not often you get a chance to tell a story like theirs, so I just tried to stay out of the way. I honestly had very little to do with it, the credit goes to Jon, his family and especially Scott's family for be willing to discuss it so openly this close to his passing.

  • Though how Jon's formed this relationship with Scott is awesome,
what struck me most was how Scott lived his life. I would venture to say he lived more in his 12 yrs than most of us do in a full lifetime. Jon was right, he gained more from the relationship that Scott did.

  • Matt, awesome story and reminds us all these guys arent just players, they are part of the human family.Very humbling.

well said JISLIFER. Scotty really did live more in his short time than most do in a full lifetime. I really feel im a better person for having learned about this kid..his love for sports..but more so his love for his fellow mankind..truly one of the great inspirational tales of my life..how a kid so young..beset by so much hardship and pain..can keep his faith and hopes and dreams alive. I wish I were half as strong and brave as Scotty Schaefer!! What I take from this story: Dont take anything for granted, be kind to my fellow man, and live life to the fullest.

THis is such a sad, heartbreaking story..yet a story filled with hope and preserverance..I think back on the times I wanted to give up or said "Life isnt fair" and I see the story of this 12 year old kid..going through 26 surgeries..and through it all..he kept his head up and held high!! Makes me think twice now about getting down about small matters or feeling sorry for myself...I know im better off for having been able to learn of Scottys Story!!
