Jalen Battle

  • Per Twitter, Jalen Battle has named UK as his leader.

A 6'3" 180 lb safety prospect (4.6), Battle plays for University School in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. His teammates Nick Internicola (LB), Skai Moore (LB), Dionte Taylor (WR) and D.J. Woods (WR) have all been offered by UK.

Of the 5, Moore, Taylor, and Internicola are the most sought after prospects, although Battle has an (gasp) Illinois offer and Woods has an Indiana offer.

Battle is unrated by Rivals and ESPN (and isn't in the 247 database) and is a 2* per Scout.

Edit: He also tweeted that he is committing soon.

2* in Florida are a much different animal than 2* everywhere else.

  • Looks like he University School of Nova South is a smallish (~1500 student) private school in Ft. Lauderdale. Just based on measurables, he has great size and speed for the position.

His highlight film is short, so perhaps he hasn't been a starter? Camped at several schools, including Miami(FL), so he could get a significant ratings bump if he sees more action or gets on the radar for some of the analysts. It may be less of an indictment of his talent (the low/non-rating) and more of a function of him not getting enough playing reps for an analysis.

  • We have more pressing needs at this time. At least for now, I hope we don't take an early commitment from him.

2 WR teammates and 2 LB teammates with offers already from us. Wouldn't hurt to see what the possibility is of some of those guys wanting to play together. Just worth a look, if so, both area's of need. If not, move on

    Hogan_Ryan

  • Especially a kid like Internicola. I would gladly take both Battle and him.

  • Jalen dropping tons of hints about UK tonight. Says he is calling Coach Cassidy tomorrow. Looks like we are gonna have another commit.

if so we will have another built in recruiter to help us try and bring some of those teammates at need positions with him to Lexington. Sounds like a guy who is built for the Hybrid safety role, or maybe a traditional safety?

  • This kid will end up being one of the better DB/LB recruits from Fla. after his Sr. season. Very underrated at this point. At 6'3 175 he'll be a perfect S/LB Hybrid ala Winston Guy in Minter's defense. And the odds are very good he'll bring a teammate with him.

  • Per tj walker he committed tonight and feels like Woods, Moore, and Internicola will all join him

    allenctynimrod

  • I can't find Woods profile. What is his first name?

    tWhit

  • DJ Woods he's a speed WR

    allenctynimrod

  • Yeah but you can't find his profile under DJ. I went to the University School website and it shows his name as Donnice Woods. And when I went to his profile on here it says he's an All Purpose back/CB. Not sure if I'm looking at the right guy or not. Anyway, Internicola and Moore are highly rated nice looking prospects.

I found him on Scout under D.J. Found him under Donnice Woods on 24/7.

He's got some decent offers. You know what screw the Trinity kids. We'll take these 4 guys.

    tWhit

  • Woods is a 2 star on rivals and he's listed as DJ and WR

  • Looks like a reach to me, if in fact uk does accept this commit (which I'm somewhat skeptical on).

    MinterWonderlnd

  • I've been ok with every player we have taken thus far but to be honest I don't like this one. I know noone cares and that's fine i'm not trying to argue, but I do not see 4.6 when I see this kid play. He does have great measureables but I think there are other kids with just as much potential instate. I like Canady better. No doubt the speed (4.48-4.52 40) is there and he's much stronger with good instincts... Yes he's only 6'1 but he's 210# with better athleticism... I'm all for building pipelines but with all our needs I do NOT understand this. If I were Joker I would not take this kid. Sorry.

    todd

  • So Minter and Todd, you wouldnt take this kid if it brings in Internicola and Woods? JMO but that I think that is the reasoning to accept this kids commitment.

think that would be exactly the reasoning behind this. The sum is much greater than the parts here IMO. Battle by himself I guess you could argue if he was a good commit or not, but put them all together and it makes ALOT of sense. It addresses a great number of needs we have all expressed.

    Hogan_Ryan

  • Uk reached on a kid late last yr in Sterling Wright who plays the same spot. Can't afford to use another valuable scholarship on a similar type of talent at the same position, especially with fewer rides to give out this yr. For a roster like uk's that needs a lot of help, each scholarship should be looked at like a bar of gold.

    MinterWonderlnd

  • Not sure if it is reaching if they pick up a kid late and noone else is really jumping at the offer. I understand what you are saying but you dont turn down a kid if it can bring in two more talented kids. Now he has to have the ability to play some or UK doesnt take him. Plus as far as numbers go I would bet the world we get very close to 25 again this year. Projections are already at 20-22 so 3-5 more spots will almost certainly come open.

  • I've talked about this before, why take a kid like this and not offer a kid like Daylen Dawkins who fits our offense to a T? Or Tyree Harris, Joey Bloomfield etc...

Listen I fully agree the kid looks like a good prospect but anyone should be able to watch the video and see this kid is not a SEC LB and he doesn't have the speed to play Safety... We have way to many glaring needs to take a reach this early in the year... I really try to stay positive but i'm sorry I can't on this one, I don't want to argue about it either. My opinion won't change because it's obvious this kid is weak and slow by SEC standards. The deal should be if all want to commit then all get a offer, kids change their minds so much these days in no way shape or form am I confident Battle is the future at SAM LB... Remember a month ago is was Nash, now people are willing to go from Nash to this. It's not even close.

Because they are not as good and do not offer the same benefits. His commitment puts us in contentionfor commitments at a position of need. I do not understand your infatuation of Dawkins, Bloomfield.

  • Also, for everyone who is pointing out that Battle and Woods are 2* on Scout, they are also NR, which means not ranked. They have nit been evaluated on any of the three big sites. A little unfair to judge them based on the 2* and their listed measurables. Often means they have not attended many camps.

Woods is a smallish WR that would be in the slot. We are loaded at the slot and if we take one this year it needs to be Timmons. Any other WR we take in this class needs to be able to play on the outside. IMO
