because harrow is weak, real weak. I would rather have Polson as my backup PG. Maybe not as athletic but without a doubt more hard nosed and very good about bringing hustle to the floor. I know your opinion will differ but that's my take.

thanks Matt I forgot about Hawkins.

  • I truthfully don't feel in my gut that we will get Wiggins and if that is the case you can fill that spot with hawkins and have all the point guards you will need. Also Hawkins would allow you that multiple year player that some of us have been asking for; and what better position to have that multiple year player than as your PG? But laying all jokes aside, I don't mind Polson being the backup should we not get Hawkins. I have just been really disappointed in Harrow and he has really been exposed with physical play. He is just too soft IMHO.

wouldn't it be more likely if we get Randle, that backup PG would be Aaron Harrison.

I asked Chris earlier about hawkins position, and i was told he is a combo guard.

I think we might see more Lamb like approach.

Swing Aaron Harrison to PG and let Young play SG. Poythress, Randle, and Johnson/Lee.

    or

Harrison, Young, Randle, Lee, and JOhnson.

(i am getting off topic...so many possibility in the line up is making me drool...)

  • Nothing to this point has changed with what I am hearing in that Poythress and WCS are currently coming back, with Goodwin and Noel gone. Like Chris said though, this is all very fluid right now. If UK wins enough games to get WCS more exposure and his stock keeps rising, it will be hard to keep him here unless he just wants to return. I do think that with the draft being so weak this year, while a player may be projected as a lottery pick, I think Cal will advise them as he sees fit. In the past, if they have been a lottery pick then he has told them to go, no questions asked. I think this year is different, but who knows. Just my opinion.

As for Harrow, I am not sure where he would transfer, but do you really think he will stay here to play backup to Harrison? I'm sure Cal can probably talk Polson into staying one more year to have a backup. Maybe Harrow does stay, and I hope he does. That would be great to have him as a "backup".

I think you are correct in this thinking. Regardless Andrew is gonna play 38 mins a game at the point anyway especially late in the season.

    try to imagine this: 1. Hood 2. Polson 3. Harrow 4. Wiltjer 5. Poythress 6. WCS 7. Harrison 8. Harrison 9. Young 10. Lee 11. Johnson 12. Willis 13. Randle or Wiggins

What would be other teams' reaction? bow

This would be unbelievable, but would also leave us with 2-3 returning players for 14-15.

  • Polson will not get a scholarship this fall if Hawkins or if both recruits that we want comes. Plus if Noel and one other leaves for sure, someone else (besides the one) in the group of Archie, Alex, Willie, or Ryan, might leave also so the numbers will be fine in the end and no oversign will happen. I believe Hood and Kyle come back.

  • I hope Kyle comes back. If he is willing to put on some good weight / muscle, I believe he has such a diverse skill set that he will be a nightmare match-up for just about everyone. He would also be a match-up problem in the NBA if he beefs up.

I think Kyle should seriously consider red-shirting next year to really work on his body. Plus, look at the team that he would be practicing against each day to improve his skillset. His body does not look any differently to me than it did the first time I saw him as a freshman.

If his goal is the NBA, then he has to transform his body. If he works to transform his body, I believe he could be a special player at UK and in the NBA. I hope he chooses to do so. GO CATS!!!

I know you were just offering an alternative, but Harrow being back would be an amazing back up pg. and I think that is what Cal envisioned for him, I think he believed he thought he would get Teague back this year. and that is root of problem for this kentucky team

Redshirting would be a great idea but kids today just don't have that kind of patience. He's got a ton of work to do on his body. Some of which is just getting older and filling out.

  • There are ways to make room on this roster and players. Oh and Harrow is way more likely to transfer to a smaller school after he graduates in 3 years this summer than WIltjer.

    GregNJ

  • Who would backup Harrison if Harrow transfers? Simple, his brother or Hawkins.

People don't forget that Cal can get his 6th man drafted in the 1st round. And as talented as the team will be next year it will be easier for guys to hide their shortcummings thus allowing them to still improve their draft stock even as the 7-8 man. Just cause a couple guys may return for next year doesn't mean that they would have to settle for a 3 year plan.

  • While I agree Harrow is the best option to back up Andrew, I'm surprised so many people think he's the only option. Aaron Harrison is certainly capable of doing it, much like Lamb did during his two years at UK. You also have Polson & likely Hawkins on the roster.

  • Here we go again. Schitzophrenic uk fans.

We want four year players, but we are trying to chase every upperclassman who is on scholarship off of the roster.

harrow has had issues this year, no doubt. but he's played very well at times. Another year in cal's system, even as the backup would do him wonders. Perhaps by the time he's a senior he'd be ready to assume the role full time. Remember, don't we want some "4 year players"?

Wiltjer is no different. Some are saying he's sure to transfer even though there is no evidence of that. he's another who took a nice step forward this year and IMO is poised to be very good for his junior and senior year.

We have some who want to have their cake and eat it to. They demand perfection from freshmen. Yet they also want 4 year players on the roster. If poythress were perfect, he'd be going pro. If all of our freshmen played to some of your standards they'd all go pro and we'd have to sign 11 players per year.

In today's college basketball, you can't expect a 3 or 4 year player to be outstanding as a freshman.

Playing Aaron at point would be just as undesirable as playing Lamb there. It was a necessity but it took away from what Lamb did best by asking him to be a facilitator rather than a shooter/scorer.

In fact, if you go back and look at games that Teague played fewer than 35 minutes you are likely to see Polson logging some minutes at PG. With the talent the team had last year (and next year) you can get by for stretches without a PG but not for an extended period of time.

There is no reason for Cal to not have a servicable PG on his roster to back up Andrew (or whoever the PG du jour is). Hawkins could be that guy for the next four years. Relying on your shooting guard is not the answer. It weakens two positions. And God forbid your PG is injured and you have to convert your SG to PG permanently.

I completely disagree with your first comment. Lamb was our back up PG at UK and he did an excellent job. Next year, if we have Aaron harrison who has experience in PG and also we have Young, it is completely fine for Aaron Harrison to play PG. Allowing for Aaron, James, and Andrew (if we get him).

Your second paragraph is 100% false. Polson only logged in minutes in 11 games. Marist, Penn State, Radford, Portland, Chattanooga, Samford, Loyola, Lamar, Ole Miss, Georgia, W Kentucky. All of which were blow out win. Only time he played was when game was completely over before the time line up. Polson averaged 2.8 mpg (for games he participated). 29 of them he didn't even play. only once he logged 10 minutes (against Penn state we won by 38 points).

Cal will play Aaron Harrison at point, if this allows higher minutes for our top talent. If he wants to keep all talent happy, then Aaron might see time in PG position.

I don't see how you can even consider not putting the Harrison twins on the floor together. That is probably the most intriguing thing about them, IMO. Two Top5 McDonald's All-American guards who are twins and have been playing together since they were in diapers. That is something that only comes along once every two or three lifetimes. I've seen brothers play together before, and even twins, but there has never been a set of twin guards with their level of talent.

The closest thing to the Harrison twins would be Dick and Tom VanArsdale who played at Indiana back in the early 1960's. They were both selected in the 2nd round of the 1965 NBA Draft, both made the rookie All-Star team, both were NBA All-Stars 3 times, both were considered the best free-throw shooters in the league, both played 12 seasons, and both retired in 1977. You could say that their careers were .... identical
    Bah Dum Bah drums

It's just very rare to have twin guards, and unprecedented for them to be as good as the Harrison's are. The last thing I want to happen is them not on the floor together. From what I've seen they both have great ball skills, both can shoot, both can drive, both can pass, and both can create their own shot. So either one can play either guard position at any time. I'm as excited as I've ever been to see these two freshmen play together. It appears to be like second nature for them to know what each other is doing on the floor. They have to be on the floor together. Not doing so is just a waste of their special relationship.

Stoops Troops reporting for duty .... Which way to the front lines?

    jasonukfan

  • I also don't think we are going to need much of a backup at either guard position, unless one gets in foul trouble. Like others have mentioned, Aaron can play the PG for 3 minutes while Andrew gets a quick rest. They are both in very good shape already, and that will only improve after a couple of weeks with Calipari. I just don't see them coming off the floor very much. I'll be surprised if the Harrison's average any less than 33 minutes a game.

    eh, you miss understood me.

I meant when Andrew goes to bench (catching break, or foul trouble, etc). Not who starts...

I do expect both Harrison to start and play together.

Don't know much about Tom and Dick but the Morris twins at Kansas were pretty good.
