College basketball officiating has really been grating on me lately. Last year it was the block/charge. This year, it's the inconsistency and ability to be influenced by home environments.
Also, the flagrant 1. If you inadvertently elbow someone, it's a flagrant 1. If you body block someone on purpose (see Ryan Harrow last night at the end of the game), it's not. Makes zero sense.

Blame the NCAA and TV for the way games are called..I have been a ref for 38 yrs but would never go the college route because of the way the game is called..They dont want the refs to call walking when the players take a pass and switch their pivot foot..They want everything called according to a little thing called advantage/disadvantage..Let me explain..
If a player gets a rebound and gets clubbed from behind and doesnt loose the ball usually a foul is not called as the non rebounder didnt gain an advantage..If the contact is violent there is a chance it could be called..But from my point of view by not calling the foul, you have given the advantage to the fouling team,as they can run rampant and get physical and not worry about getting a foul called..It takes the skill and thinking out of the game..What if a guy has 4 fouls and "fouls on a rebound" but doesnt get called..Advantage to his team..Period..
What if the contact or hack or whatever it was kept the rebounder from turning and firing an outlet pass to start the break? But they dont think like that..That situation last night,I guarantee you Burr didnt call Harrow for a foul because it looked like the contact was minimal..But for whatever reason it seem to knock the kid to the floor where two violations ensued and the rest is history...If you call those chicken bleep 2nd and 3rd fouls on Nerlens you might as well call that on Harrow
Sorry for the diatribe ,but this is why I watch no games at all if the CATS arent playing..The NCAA and the current group of all college officials suck..This wonderful game has been ruined...Done

I couldn't agree more. BUT the thing that makes me insane about college officiating is lack of accountability. They should make the refs hold a press conference after every game like players and coaches so the media could question them about their lack of consistency and just flagrant stupidity at times. My family and friends are constantly telling me to chill out about the refs that calls don't change the outcome of the games blah blah blah but it absolutely can change a game one way or another. Sorry College officiating is a soap box issue for me and makes me ramble. I always say if I see an official on the court and I know their name they suck. Officials should be invisible for the most part.

The officiating in the first half made the game almost unwatchable. It was better in the second half but still wildly inconsistent (and there were a number of calls, and non-calls, during the Ole Miss run that extended the run).
I have no problem with the idea of advantage/disadvantage considered with regard to calling fouls and other violations. The key is, they have to be consistent. If they are consistent then it is a level playing field and players can adjust to the way certain things are being called.

Jim Burr no call
