Jim Burr no call

  • No foul, no travel and apparently not out of bounds. Wow.

  • That was one of the most embarrassing things I have ever seen. Even it was a foul on UK, it was something, not nothing.

  • That happened at a crucial point during Ole Miss's second half run too. Very, very bad no call with the ref, as pictured above, just standing there staring at the player lying out of bounds. What was he thinking?!?!?!

Right. You can't not call anything. Has to be something.

  • By far the worst ref out there. I've seen him call terrible games in just about every major league. Pitiful.

  • The state of collegiate officiating goes down every year.

College basketball officiating has really been grating on me lately. Last year it was the block/charge. This year, it's the inconsistency and ability to be influenced by home environments.

Also, the flagrant 1. If you inadvertently elbow someone, it's a flagrant 1. If you body block someone on purpose (see Ryan Harrow last night at the end of the game), it's not. Makes zero sense.

Completely agree. They called a hand check on us last night and then repeatedly let Ole Miss do the same thing.

  • I think the ref is looking at his belly buldging out. Probably thinking to himself, "I wonder if these stripes make me look slim?"

Exactly. This isn't one of those convenient "well, I was blocked out on the play by other bodies". I mean, this is clear as day.

  • The poor level of officiating in these games never ceases to amaze me.

Do they no longer hold officiating clinics for officials during the offseason or do these refs just not attend?

    eagle_man

  • I was flipping out when this happened. I think he even pointed at him being out of bounds and then didn't blow the whistle. I agree you have to call something here, probably the foul/trip on Harrow.

    bmac

  • it's everything...that's bothering me.

Was it against texas AM...i think 2 out of bound call was against us...when it was clearly against texas AM.

or Noel has been victim of end of the game foul or rebounding like crazy. almost every close game, noel has been fouled like crazy.

what's crazy is the media has the replay even before the ref hands the ball back to the players...it can't be that hard for ref to be on the TV screen to review the play immediately and call it right...

  • he got the rebound and went straight to the floor did Harrow foul him? I did not see that much contact or did i miss something? Either way when no call was made for a foul or walk then laying out of bounds has to be called.

  • Blame the NCAA and TV for the way games are called..I have been a ref for 38 yrs but would never go the college route because of the way the game is called..They dont want the refs to call walking when the players take a pass and switch their pivot foot..They want everything called according to a little thing called advantage/disadvantage..Let me explain..

If a player gets a rebound and gets clubbed from behind and doesnt loose the ball usually a foul is not called as the non rebounder didnt gain an advantage..If the contact is violent there is a chance it could be called..But from my point of view by not calling the foul, you have given the advantage to the fouling team,as they can run rampant and get physical and not worry about getting a foul called..It takes the skill and thinking out of the game..What if a guy has 4 fouls and "fouls on a rebound" but doesnt get called..Advantage to his team..Period..

What if the contact or hack or whatever it was kept the rebounder from turning and firing an outlet pass to start the break? But they dont think like that..That situation last night,I guarantee you Burr didnt call Harrow for a foul because it looked like the contact was minimal..But for whatever reason it seem to knock the kid to the floor where two violations ensued and the rest is history...If you call those chicken bleep 2nd and 3rd fouls on Nerlens you might as well call that on Harrow

Sorry for the diatribe ,but this is why I watch no games at all if the CATS arent playing..The NCAA and the current group of all college officials suck..This wonderful game has been ruined...Done

  • Pure BS, about all you can say. Sorry, that shows refs play to the situation. I don't believe they play to teams, but they play to the situation.

Keep watching - the surprise will wear away. (And I'm not sure SEC football officiating is too terribly much better at times.)

I couldn't agree more. BUT the thing that makes me insane about college officiating is lack of accountability. They should make the refs hold a press conference after every game like players and coaches so the media could question them about their lack of consistency and just flagrant stupidity at times. My family and friends are constantly telling me to chill out about the refs that calls don't change the outcome of the games blah blah blah but it absolutely can change a game one way or another. Sorry College officiating is a soap box issue for me and makes me ramble. I always say if I see an official on the court and I know their name they suck. Officials should be invisible for the most part.

Thank you Matt, I have been saying that for the last four years. There were always a couple of really bad calls a year in college basketball but you can now watch it nightly. They either need to make it year around and pay them more and have them get schooled and practice all through the year or keep putting up with a career of people that suck at what they do.

don, my man. I really wish you would have kept that a secret. I will never look at your posts the same again. :)

  • The officiating in the first half made the game almost unwatchable. It was better in the second half but still wildly inconsistent (and there were a number of calls, and non-calls, during the Ole Miss run that extended the run).

I have no problem with the idea of advantage/disadvantage considered with regard to calling fouls and other violations. The key is, they have to be consistent. If they are consistent then it is a level playing field and players can adjust to the way certain things are being called.

I agree totally. My wife could tell you that you're singing my song! The thing is, I don't think it's ever going to change. The leagues (SEC particularly) is more interested in protecting the officials than in insisting they improve.

I hate the advantage/disadvantage thinking because then refs are not following what's suppose to be called a foul or violation. When I ref, I disregard situation and focus on applying the rules stated in the handbook. If it's a foul/violation, then I call it. Anyway, Jim Burr has been old, fat, and slow for years. I'm not sure why he's still allowed to ref.

Yeah, one of the most blatantly missed calls ever. I screamed so loud when it happened my poor dog about ished right there! Really couldn't even still believe what I saw and went back and watched it again at the next time out. Coach Cal had a little to say about it as well, when the refs went by him. Burr sucks but that whole crew was pitiful.
