Joker has Cats in good shape.

  • Ok, haters..you know who you are..the ones that have been calling for Jokers head and saying wed struggle with Kent ST and WKu..whats to hate on now?
UK has one of the best QB's in the SEC...if not the best. Max Smith has completed 73% of his passes for 6 tds and 0ints in 2 games. Smith stands in the pocket, will take a hit to make a big completion. The WR's are playing awesome. Aaron Boyd, Larod King, D.Sweat, G.McCaskill. Whats more, the wr's are blockling very well. Ray Sanders has 183 yrds rushing..witha td, and around 50yrds rec. George looked good in limited action, as did Mobley. The O-Line has played very well.
Defensivley, other than 1 big play from a guy with 4.28 40 speed, Kent managed only 1 scoring drive. UK's young defenders flew to the ball, I saw more swarming, more tfl's, more pressure. J.D. Harmon is a walk on cb, at 6'2 197...kids gotta get a scholly!! Lowery, Tyler, D.Blaylock all played well..Tiller too, except for a iffy penalty. Neloms looked like a all-pro at corner..that ff hit was big time. Overall..I think playing the younger, more athletic kids turned out well..Khalid Henderson and Pancho Thomas both played well..Travaughn Paschal looked like aother speed rush option beside Dupree. Donte Rumph and Mister Cobble both played liek All-SEC DT's.
Florida and Arkansas have been my upset specials..you can check my other posts..and Im sticking with both of those. Florida was lucky to eek out a 20-17 win over Mizzou..neither team played well offensively. Arkansas lost to UL-Monroe..at home..in OT. The hogs defense is very poor..if you think Uk has problems on d...watch the hogs d.
I knew Rick Minter would get the defense playing better..and I also know we are ridiculously young on d..so we will take some lumps. But you have to commend Minter for taking the responsibility on his shoulders and having the insight to put the faster, more athletic frosh in and scale down the defense to allow the players to play agressive and fast.
Things are really looking good for Uk going forward..barring injury..Smith looks as good as any young QB in college football, and our recievers are making plays. As the young defense matures and learns more and more of the defensive playbook...the Cats will upset a few teams..lose a few we should win at the same time. I still think 7 wins is attainable this year. 2013 will be a special season..as we lose only a handful of players..with a good recruiting class..Cats could surprise the SEC east next year!

  • SEC offenses will put up 400 plus yards per game on our D, unless we keep them off the field. Long drives and time of posession will be key for UK.

Off base on which points? Id like to know. No way your a SSP. If you cant see the vast improvement by our offense..the potential..then youve not been watching the same team. Im calling for wins over Florida and Arkansas...the hogs are dismal..the Gators lucky not to be 0-2. Bowling green outplayed Florida for 3 qtrs..as did Texas A&M. The UL-Monroe QB put up 412 yrds on hogs defense..Max Smith will too.

Maybe? In saying that they can put up all the yard they want as long as they don't score points! LOL! Seriously though these young guys are talented but need to grow up quick over the next 2 weeks.

  • I liked some of what I saw against Kent ST, but I wouldn't say they are in good shape. A 1 and1 record with the win comming against a MAC team that gained 400 yards on our defense is nothing to crow about. I love Smith but to say he is one of the best QBs in the country is a stretch. If we want to get to 7 wins we had better not loose any of the games we are expected to win. Of course right now probably only Western and Samford fit in that category.
However, if the team continues to play hard and improves to the point that they win 4 or 5 games and are in most of the rest I would like to see Joker get another year. With the young talent and the class he appears to be bringing in this year, we would be better off than starting over. Unless we could get a BIG NAME coach which I doubt.

    blueboy

  • We played Kent State. Until we play any SEC team your post are unrealistic when trying to say that UK is improved.

But I would give Joker another year if he can get what he needs from the administration.

  • We beat a Mac team who is predicted to finish 5th in its division. Not league but division. So I wouldn't take too much out of that. I like the up tempo offense. Hate the way our run defense looks. Western will be a much bigger challenge. They have a better defense and a better run game.

Actually that kind of advice is for teams like Bama and GA, not UK. With the personnel we have, we can't play power football with Kent State must less any SEC team. We have a young Oline, which is why we are going with the no huddle, its also why Smith doesn't get extreme pressure all the time because of doing the 3 step or being in the Shotgun. Our running game's success comes from great wide receiver and tight end blocking around the ends as we saw in the KSU game, not from blowing people off the LOS. The passing game is setting up the runs, which is what we have to do for now. Mistakes and penalties can still destroy this offense of ours so we have to run what is the strengths of our personnel to win any future games.

And if we would beat WKY, you will say that they ain't FLA, and FLA will be a much bigger challenge. Doesn't this get old waiting until you are finally right about something UK does wrong. I know I have better things to do then to wait for the sky is falling thinking pattern.

    UKlaw82

  • News flash they're not Florida. Besides samford they're the worst team we play. All I'm saying is they will show us where we're at. A lot more than Kent St. *EDITED* For the record I predicted a close win.

    Don't attack the poster!

I think it's the other way around though. You guys make ridiculous predictions and wait to be right. When's the last time you were right?

And as for UK not being built to run the ball, you may be irght, but who's to blame for that? I love how Joker talks about his new frshmanpile movers in the off season, only to not have a stout enough O-line to block for them. I allowed myself to suspend my realistic expectations leading up to the UL game, but this team is not built to win in the SEC, and it's just obvious. We will possibly win one game we are not supposed to, but that's it. Hope I'm wrong. AS for the OP, if you are confident we will beat Fl and Arky, I will take your bet!

Are you willing to spend 9 mil plus per yr on a top coach and his staff. ?????

    dvillepro1

  • 9 million is a bit excessive. You could hire a top notch coach for 3.5 to 4 million. Then another 2 million for coordinators and assistants. Do you like paying joker 2 million plus for losing seasons. Just like anything you get what u pay for.

    jeffries123

  • Good grief guys. Rich Brooks went 4-8, 2-9, then 3-8 in his 1st 3 seasons. Hal Mumme lost more than he won, leaving on a 2-9 downslope. Bill Curry was good for 3 wins a year. Joker went to a bowl, then came up short by one game..after big losses to the NFL. Lets let the seson play out. I see reason for optimism..especially in the next 2 years. This year..I see Florida, Mizzou, Arkansas..Georgia...I see teams we can play with. Anyone calling for Jokers head is silly.SILLY. You will all be eating your words..and Joker is at the brink of taking us to SEC respectability. Will it happen this year? Probably not..but a 7 win season and a bowl game will give a young, talented team an extra month to practice..and Max Smith is only going to get better..and hes the 12th rated QB in the entire nation as we sit..Uk's offense 45th. Imagine if Williams and Sanders dosent fumble vs the Cards? If MacIntosh hits makable FG's?We are gonna need Craig Mac to come up with a 4-4 fg game to eek out an upset over a Fla, a Ga
Our defense will take some lumps..but if they bow thier backs when it counts..force some 3 and outs, create some turnovers..our offense can score some points this year. I dont care how many yards we allow..Im more concerned with how many points we allow..if we can hold SEC foes to 21 and under..we will have a good chance to win. Take Florida..they are lucky not to be 0-2. Bowling Green drove the ball on them..Mizzou too. Arkansas is a win this year. Thisteam is young..and only getting better..Uk should improve each week. I see a offense that can put 30 on just about anyone not named Alabama..Max Smith is accurate and efficent with the ball. IF..IF UK can avoid costly turnovers..I think we upset Florida, and either Mizzou or Ga. I think joker finds a way to get 7 wins..go bowling..and get his young team primed at a SEC East run in 2013.

You're right. Let the season play out.

Other than that, your post is wildly optimistic.

I hope we beat WKU. They (Western) looked really good against Bama sans turnovers. Toppers were moving the ball nicely against the best defense in all the land. I am personally scared of the mobile QB (Jakes), abd their monster TE which is squarely on the onus of our miserable LB play.

Andrew Jackson is the best Defensive player we have yet to face yet. Dude was penetrating Bama's oline and smacking people around.

Don't take this as a slight, but they maybe on par with UK talent wise, so let's take this season game by game and HOPE our defense improves.

    Kooky Kats 247

  • Wow.WKU? Really? So, after Uk puts up 45 on WKU, then you might join in on the optimism? Hope so..this team needs the fans behind it. Lets support our Cats, not criticise them at every turn. I really think Max Smith is special, and a leader. He gets the ball off so fast it keeps the rush off him. Hes been great at check-downs. Has the clock set firmly on 3 seconds. This cat offense can turn a defense's agression against them.

    BigBlueDawg12

  • We will not put 45 on WKU. I hope we do. Their DLine is formidable.

But I do LOVE what Max is bringing to the table.

    Kooky Kats 247

  • I know football games and their stats are not transitive, but Western held Bama to 35 points.

WKU Stopped Lacy and Yeldon to like 50 yards apiece and sacked McCarron 6 times. One thing for certain, Bama's Oline is better than ours.

WKU also had more first downs than Bana after 3 quarters. Had they not turned the ball over 3 times it would have been a less lobsided game.

I think our game next week will be close and whoever wins turnover battle will win game.

BBD12 does give the Sunshine Pumper segment of the fanbase a bad name. There is unrealistic, and then there is the opening post of this thread. Neloms an all-pro? Smith best QB in the SEC? Rumph & Cobble all-SEC? Watch some more football games, sheesh.

WKU game is going to be a war. They are confident they are just as good if not better than us and certainly will NOT be intimidated after playing @LSU late last season (only trailed 14-7 at the half) and Bama last weekend.

  • There is no way anybody can objectively say that Joker has this program in a good position after the demolition of a MAC team in a home opener. Granted, there was/is reason for more optimism with the way UK's offense has performed over the 1st two games but the offensive gains have been offset by the backslide in the D. I've been as hard on Joker as anybody and I'll give him and Sanders credit for revamping their offense and maximizing the talents they have on the offensive side of the ball. I didn't see that one coming and it should give UK more of a chance to pull off an upset or two in the SEC IF, and that's a big if, the defense can somewhat get its act together.

I agree. I've seen enough of this offense to believe they can score on any SEC team; however the defense is vital to having a good year. I haven't exactly been sold on the linebackers and secondary though. We difinitely need improvement at DE also. I think if we improve defensively we can make some noise.

  • I am in UK's corner the whole way, but to get crazy saying we can play with the other SEC teams after beating a very weak MAC team is jumping the gun a bit. Let's take baby steps and enjoy the win, hope we come improved next week againist WKU as we will have to be or it will result in a L. If we can keep improving, then there might be a glimmer of hope. If we don't improve and improve a lot by week 4 & 5 it will be a long season. I am backing the CATS and giving the players the support they deserve. Just not jumping the gun to paint a picture the staff has fixed it yet.

  • Talk about WKUs defense all you want but keep in mind that the WKU offense put up a goose egg against Bamas defense.

The same WKU offense that with their great RB Rainey struggled against UKs defense last year. I doubt the WKU offense is better this year without Rainey who is playing in the NFL. Even factoring in that UKs defense is not as good as last year the WKU offense does not strike fear in me. I doubt that Jakes has suddenly morphed into a great passer so UK will load the box to control the run and force him to pass.

IMO the only way WKU beats UK is if they force multiple turnovers creating multiple short fields and/or score off their defense.

UK will have to throw a real stinker to lose to WKU.

  • We'll be competitive in the SEC. My worry is Joker's game management and losing 34-27 every game. GO UK, I'm still behind them and hope for wins.
