Joker haters.....

  • I've grown tired of all these so-called Uk fans hating on our HC. Perhaps you call for the days of Bill Curry..or even hal Mumme?
Since Joker has been here..Uk went to 5 straight bowls..for the 1st time in 50 years? We beat the national champs in LSU in 2007..we beat Ga between the hedges..we also played Auburn and Cam Newton to within a FG the year they won it all. We also beat Tenn for the 1st time in 26 years. Joker will make Uk a contender. We have a very young, yet talented team that will take some lumps this season, but things are looking very good for 2013 and beyond. Joker is one of the best evaluaters of under the radar talent in college football, and a good developer of talent. Look at all the ex-Cats in the NFL right now. Our offense is up-tempo and fun to watch..as well as very productive..and gone are the days of Steve browns passive..bend-dont-break defense. Minter's agressive, attacking d is way more effective and again, more fun to watch. Over the next 2 years, as everyone else will be losing tons of talent in the SEC East..having to fight turnover of seniors and such, Uk will be in great shape as Max Smith, Clemons, Sanders, Mobley..Robinson, Sweat, Legree, Shields..and most of our O-Line will remain intact..and having more experience. The defense will be tremendous next year. Even better the year after. Joker is wise, moving to build depth at all areas but concentrating on the lines..the most important position in football. I dont care how good your Qb and backs are..with asubpar O-Line..they wont move the ball. Same for your Lb's and DB's..if your DT's cant eat up blockers and get penetration behind the LOS..dosent matter how good your back 5 play.
Leave Joker alone. If you dont have anything positive to say..say nothing. We need to support this team..and Joker..not criticise it at every turn.

  • I am somewhere between you and the "haters". Even though I don't pile on Coach Phillips, I still reserve the right to be critial of certain decisions and/or player preperation without surrendering my "fan status".

Message boards would sure be a boring place if we all "left Joker alone" and only spoke about the good things Coach Phillips and his staff do as you suggest.

  • I have taken the "Jaw Jacker" approach.

After 30 years, I finally got it.

If our fans would truly admit what they truly want I think most of them would as well. Cause what they truly desire, is to hear the "experts" - "talking heads" - "media" - whatever, talk positive about our football team. For some reason, that matters to many, many of our "fans". In fact it is the most important thing, if they will truly admit it

All i know is that i have been all over the world, including the sand of Iraq, and all i ever wanted, was to be back here, looking over this beautiful countryside, and hills and hollers.

I know what my team, university, and state mean to me, and i'll NEVER be ashamed to say how much i love all three, and i'll never grow tired of supporting them either. The Cats are Kentucky, and Kentucky is the Cats!

Shit, thats good enough for me. GO BIG BLUE!

  • Looking at it from outside the fan prism, I think the issue is there are three pretty obvious camps on this issue: 1) Those who are all in and don't want to say or see anything negative; 2) Those who are supportive but also understand there is a place for constructive criticism; 3) Those who seem to never have anything but negative things to say.

My guess is the problem is with group number 3, of which there are some pretty obvious members. It's a small group but one that constantly drives the conversation to places that ruin the ability to have healthy discussions that can, and should, include the type of difference of opinion that drives message boards. The thing about it is those are the people who are always the most vocal, so it's a vicious cycle.

  • I think you miss one thing Matt, there are people on this board who will rip you apart for any single negative thing you say about this program.

That leads to what you call negative topics staying open longer. It really doesn't have to be pumping or dooming, guys like Hop attack everything negative that is said.

It pisses me off to no end and makes me ready to drop my membership.

  • Here's my problem with your post op. Brooks was head coach for 4 of those bowl trips. Then you throw in a moral victory against auburn. We are young but who knows how that talent will develop over the years. As bad as brown was as DC I don't remember any defense worse than what we've showed. I'm tired of being the laughing stock of the sec. Tired of moral victories. Tired of excuses. Its always wait until next year or the next. I want a difference maker as our head coach not an average coach. And who the hell are you telling people what to post?

  • I have always thought of the UK fan-base was split, as well... Too many ONLY focus on BB success & give too little about the FB program. Your "Instigators & naysayers" that just want to start arguments as to what's wrong w/ every little thing, all the time...And TrueBlue Believers that just want respect and a level playing field in ALL our programs.

I wish someone would put together a telethon for the "BigBlueNation FB Improvement Fund"....Maybe get Coach Cal on board to help raise funds...(You know, If anyone could get the ball rollin'...Cal would be that man.) He's got the ability to call on everyone in the BBN to give what they could afford. A little from most - a lot from some...Maybe a little bit of corporate donations thrown in there as well...Wham bam & in no time flat, UK could do a major improvement w/o getting bonding approvals from Frankfort.

But that's a pipe dream, of course...Everyone is too busy bitching & complaining & fighting to REALLY fix anything. (Kinda like the politicians in DC!)

    Yes. +1

I'm all for UK Football. I just hate Joker. Well hotdice is right so I guess hate is a strong word. I don't hate him. I do hate him as a coach. I hate that he's coaching UK. It's not a personal thing. He just isn't a good coach. And since the diehard football fans were calling for Mitchell to be let go so that money could go to the football program I've had a healthy dislike of those diehard football first fans. Not a hate.

Matt - you classified the groups really well. And rob65 the only group Matt missed is the know it alls. The guy that sits at his computer and likes to argue and/or try to prove everyone else wrong and believes his opinion is the only one. Truly the only posters I have trouble with are the ones that come on here and do two things:
    1) single out players and bash them beyond belief. These are student/athletes and not a one of them deserve to be thrown under the bus by their own fan base. If you don't believe in them than there is a proper way for constructive criticism. Posters forget these players are 18 - 22 year olds. And these players have feelings, friends and family and your comments can be very hurtful. Think twice before you post. Think first how it would make you feel if it was said about your, your son, grandson, nephew or friend before you hit the post button. It's that simple!
    2) And the other posters that I take issue is with some have to beat a dead horse. They get onto something (and often its nothing more than being a copy cat of what someone else has already said) and they have to post it 5 times over and they also have to post it on every open forum possible. They are like a nasty virus trying to spread itself to see how many they can get to agree with them.
We are all entitled to our opinions and sometimes the respectful thing to do is agree to disagree.

Hate is an awful strong word. I agree. Although with some of the post I have read the past few years it's possible hate is accurate and that is a sad sad thing.

  • Great response Matt! Thank you!

  • Their is no doubt their was quite a few people and some on this board that felt Joker was not ready to be a HC in the SEC. He was the easy choice because of his ties to UK, his price tag as well as he had the endorsement of Brooks. Now some people ride the Joker fence and when UK wins they jump to the "keep Joker side" and when UK loses they jump to the "get a new coach side".

But I am here to tell you it doesn't matter if you are a Joker supporter or a Joker non-supporter. Eventually he will be out because the same problems exist that have yet to be addressed and those problems have doomed every coach at UK since Fran Curci. These problems plus low expectations have doomed the UK football program long before Joker.

  • It boils down to the fact that no matter where you go you're going to run into stupid people. For awhile you can tolerate them and you try to be nice and see things from their perspective but then it gets to the point where it becomes obvious that they want you to be as miserable as they are. Thats when things get a little ugly. All you can do is just hope like hell they are proven wrong. But in the end that really doesn't matter because they're already wrong. We all know who these people are. I'm certainly not including people who are critical of the way things are going. I think we are all more than a little concerned about the direction of the program. Its just that most of the time a guy feels the need to take up for his beloved program. Coaches come and go. Obviously Joker is a little different simply because he's one of ours. If you truly love this program then you know the challenges that this program faces. And it sure would be nice to see the hometown boy lead us to accomplish great things. If it happens it happens. If it don't it won't. On to the next one. Those who are spiteful and bitter will remain spiteful and bitter regardless. The rest of us will continue to do what we've always done support the program and the coach in place.

  • Joker and Randy have done a good job with the offense but Joker is not a great recruiter, evaluater or developer of talent. He's average at best and that won't get it done in the SEC. I will continue to support him until this season is over but if this team doesn't make it back to a bowl or show a ton of improvement I hope he is gone.

  • I'll also add that luckily we have a rating system in place on this site. So its obvious who the stupid people are.

You made it clear you were speaking about me. You didn't need to add this line to underline it. The ratings mean nothing at all. It's just a popularity number. If you're an outspoken liberal on any Kentucky related board you're going to get downvoted to the hilt. I take pride in it. And if you're looking for a stupid person look no further than your mirror. Next time be a man and call the person out by name instead of hinting around it like a coward.

  • I'm as negative toward joker as anyone as a coach. As a person I have no problem what so ever. I just want a better program and if that makes me a dummy than so be it. I can also say those who keep rooting for average is enabling the program and that's not very smart either. At the end of the day we're all wanting the same thing. Some think joker can get it done others don't differing opinions on how we get there doesn't make anyone smarter than anyone else.

    jeffries123

  • OK YOU DON'T OR DO LIKE JOKER. YOU WANT TO WIN MORE GAMES. WELL SAY WE DO SPEND 9 MILL PLUS PER YR TO HIRE A SUPER STAFF. THEN WHAT ???? THEY STILL HAVE TO RECRUIT THE SAME STATE OF KY THAT HAS VERY LITTLE TALENT EACH YR. THEN YOU MUST TRY TO ASK A 4 OR 5 STAR KID TO LEAVE SAY GA OR FLA TO COME UP HERE AWAY FROM FAMILY AND THE SCHOOL HE WANTED TO PLAY FOR HIS WHOLE LIFE. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN PEOPLE.

KY FANS LIVE A HUGE DREAM WHEN IT COMES TO UK FOOTBALL...
