Joker haters.....

  • 9 million? Really? You could hire a hc and coordinators plus assistants for 6 to 6.5 million. Just like basketball if you hire a coach kids wanna play for they will come. Ohio is very fertile recruiting grounds a top notch coach could break into Ohio. Then maybe keep top ranked kids instate. Pull a few from the south and then you could have something going. Plus with the money the sec TV contracts bring in money Shouldn't be a problem. So take your excuses somewhere else. Its that mentality that holds this program back. Don't except mediocrity anymore.

OK YOU DON'T OR DO LIKE JOKER. YOU WANT TO WIN MORE GAMES. WELL SAY WE DO SPEND 9 MILL PLUS PER YR TO HIRE A SUPER STAFF. THEN WHAT ???? THEY STILL HAVE TO RECRUIT THE SAME STATE OF KY THAT HAS VERY LITTLE TALENT EACH YR. THEN YOU MUST TRY TO ASK A 4 OR 5 STAR KID TO LEAVE SAY GA OR FLA TO COME UP HERE AWAY FROM FAMILY AND THE SCHOOL HE WANTED TO PLAY FOR HIS WHOLE LIFE. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN PEOPLE.

KY FANS LIVE A HUGE DREAM WHEN IT COMES TO UK FOOTBALL...

I don't condone the caps but you hit on the main issue. Like it or not UK is a bball school and football will always be second fiddle. That's just how it is. I'd love to have a consistently relevant football team but if I could only have one I'm happy it's bball.

As for Joker, look where Brooks had us and look where we are now. Joker drove this thing into the ground virtually overnight. I don't see how anyone could defend keeping him. Hell we were better under Mumme.

  • If your feelings get hurt cause someone is too positive or too negative on a message board then you need to step away from it and do something else.

My real life has enough things in it that I have to take serious. This isn't one of them.

  • Those that think that some big name coach is going to come in on a white charger and UK football is going to be happy ever after are the most delusional fans on this site.

Unless the underlying problems that infest UK football are addressed no coach will ever be able to win big here without cheating.

It took UK 50 plus years to reach its deserved status as a graveyard of coaches and IMO no quick fix is in the cards. It is going to take great effort over many years to turn the UK football program around with some good luck with lower rated recruits turning out better than anticipated, a perfect storm of support by the powers that be and some help from the football Gods.

I think you miss one thing Matt, there are people on this board who will rip you apart for any single negative thing you say about this program.

That leads to what you call negative topics staying open longer. It really doesn't have to be pumping or dooming, guys like Hop attack everything negative that is said.

It pisses me off to no end and makes me ready to drop my membership.

    amen

or posts by the OP that even make sunshine pumpers blush and think they are over the top. such puffery and in this thread such incindiary attacks are in no way helpful to anyone.

Here's my problem with your post op. Brooks was head coach for 4 of those bowl trips. Then you throw in a moral victory against auburn. We are young but who knows how that talent will develop over the years. As bad as brown was as DC I don't remember any defense worse than what we've showed. I'm tired of being the laughing stock of the sec. Tired of moral victories. Tired of excuses. Its always wait until next year or the next. I want a difference maker as our head coach not an average coach. And who the hell are you telling people what to post?

OK jeffries, you are right Joker was an assistant for 4 of those bowl games. But, he was the head man for the streak busters UT (26 years long), USC (10 years long), and Spurrier (I don't even remember, but in the teens).

I would fit in Matt's Group 2. Joker has some clear deficincies so far. Last year the offense was terrible. I think youth at the playmaker positions and let's face it Tee Martin were big problems. This year Joker adjusted, let Pat Washington have a lot of say in the structure in the offense and things improved. First two weeks of this year the defense has been really bad. Joker, to his credit, has basically said publicly we are going to go to more 4-3 and simplify because we are too young on that side of the ball. His DC doesn't like it, but Joker has said simplify and put the 11 best guys on the field. Will that make a big improvement, time will tell. There is still a lot of work to do.

Looking at it from outside the fan prism, I think the issue is there are three pretty obvious camps on this issue: 1) Those who are all in and don't want to say or see anything negative; 2) Those who are supportive but also understand there is a place for constructive criticism; 3) Those who seem to never have anything but negative things to say.

My guess is the problem is with group number 3, of which there are some pretty obvious members. It's a small group but one that constantly drives the conversation to places that ruin the ability to have healthy discussions that can, and should, include the type of difference of opinion that drives message boards. The thing about it is those are the people who are always the most vocal, so it's a vicious cycle.

Your forgetting to include group #1 as a big part of the problem. Those people who are "all in" are also the one's attacking any of us who post anything critical. More importantly, they accuse people who are actually in group 2, of being in group 3. If they didn't get so upset about people being critical, all of this bickering back and forth would never take place.

If those people who you call “all in” don’t want to hear criticisms, then they should start a UK pep rally board so they can pump one another up. It’s great to be 100% behind your team, but to have blind faith in everything UK football is just naïve. When you play poker, you can go all in with a pair of deuces if you like, and you may occasionally get lucky, but it’s not a very intelligent play.

This is very accurate. Although I stay in the middle, "Group 1" is significantly more guilty of ruining the discussion on the boards than "Group 3"

They are the first to make personal attacks against other posters and start the name calling that makes me want to just turn off my computer.

  • Matt is definitely right, it's group 3 that ruin good threads. They are the ones who start the name calling as soon as someone gives any kind of rebuttal to their post. They can't stand the fact that someone actually supports the team and Joker. And then it escalates to where it's nothing about football just personal attacks. It's childish.

Catmando - starting their own pep rally board will not work, because the critics (won't call them haters) find their way there. The critics blow up every forum there is. They feel this need to override any positive anyone has to say or do. I have been on other forums and posted something positive to like the players or the team in general, and I have been blasted. I have been called names and told I am the problem. Really, I am the problem because I support these young men and give them encouragement, support and attend their games. I am no sunshine pumper and I know there are problems, but I also know there is some good as well. I am a realist. But I will always support the team. If anyone wants to call me out for that they can. Doesn't mean I agree with everything. Heck I don't agree with everything at my job or what my bosses say/do, but I don't quit my job because of it and I am not a quitter on this team. They have my full support and whatever happens as the season rolls on or at the end of the season is out of my control. I will deal with it then. But until then, the CATS get my support.

BlueGhost - can't win every battle. Sometimes you have to agree to disagree and move on and not get nasty or rude about it. Not saying you do, just saying in general. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but when their opinions get personal about players that is where I take a stance. Unless they want to post by their real name and not a user name and hide behind it running their mouths and man up for the remarks they make that are rude and nasty I will call it out. There is a limit. These are young 18 - 22 year olds who deserve better from their own so called "fans".

I never said you personally were the problem. It's the people that attack and accuse anyone who does criticize any facit of the problem.

I have never once come out and attacked anyone on here because I didn't like what they said in regards to UK football. I argue with them, I make my point, but I don't attack.

On the flip side, there are several, who go out of their way to nitpick my post and find something negative about it so they can attack me.

Instead of argiung their perspective, they take their ball and go home, by trying to paint me as some sort of Joker hater, or LOD, or whatever tag they decide to use at the moment.

I'll admit, I'm emotional and very critical at times about the program when I think it is waranted, but that doesn't mean I don't love UK. In fact, I think it may be a testament to the fact that I do actually care about my program enough that mediocrity does not satisfy me.

I am not calling for Joker to be replaced. But your logic IMHO is faulty in the respect that the link between big name coaches and top recruits is rather strong.

  • It can happen. The question is who's the big name coach and where is the guy that can get him to come here. I'm not seeing either.

  • I guess I'm just confused as to what's left to argue about. Is Joker on the hot seat? Sure, whether we want him to be or not. If you are pro or con here it really doesn't even matter.

I also would guarantee that the administration cares a lot more about empty seats at Commonwealth stadium than anyone's opinion here at the Cat's Pause (possibly even the journalists).

    BlueGhost

  • I don't mind "honest" discussion about the program. I myself have been critical of Joker and am on record saying that our program has to show progress this year for him to keep his job.

What my main issue is the 3 or 4 wildly negative and wildly un-informed posters who drive a constant agenda. I will never back down from a situation in which I am trying to bring truth to the discussion. Interestingly enough, most of the misinformed posters seem to be more uninformed and the athletic department and it's funding and the improvements to the football facilities more than anything else.

Agreed. Joker is on the hot seat and he's likely to be fired unless we see a turnaround because of the empty seats more than anything. No sense in kicking a guy while he's down. We need to focus on the games and the teams and gear discussion towards those things. Can we still discuss coaching decisions and what not? of course. But we need to at the very least be respectable towards the staff.

Agree with that. I saw a thread the other day about the attendance. Many blamed the economy. I just slapped my head. I guess they didn't notice the economy didn't seem to be affecting Florida, Notre Dame, and on and on and on. If UK was in the top 10 it would be packed and then some every game. Economy has nothing to do with it. It's all about the unacceptable product on the field. imo

I agree about the administration part. Unless we run a minimum of 6 - 6 and bowl game I don't believe they even entertain a return. Even with a 6 - 6 and a bowl game, it's going to be a hard sell to get fans returning to Commonwealth. Some fans believe if HC is gone, we are then going to get a high $$ - big name HC. That is yet to be seen and I for one will believe it when it happens. It's all about the $$ in this game at the top level. Is it fair to not support a return if we run 6 - 6. In my opinion no, This truly is a young team in alot of key positions. If we run 6 - 6 this year I believe next year is very promising.

    1003blue

  • If this team goes 6-6 then we have our coach. Then next year I think expectations would be high and so would fan morale. So season tickets would sale better.
