Jokers reputation with recruits?

  • I've read alot of comments from alot of potential UK football recruits and the one common theme you hear from the kids in reference to Joker is "He's really down to earth".. "He's a good guy".. "He's easy to talk too"..

I think all of these things are great that the kids feel that way, but, it got me to wondering, they all seem to like him, but, do they respect him at the same time? The reason I even question this is because if you go read what kids have to say about Saben, Meyer, Spurrier, Kelly and most of the other bigtime coaches, being down to earth and a good guy are hardly what your going to hear.. Your gonna hear things like, "he's intense", he's a proven winner, he'll push me, etc.. You hardly ever hear those type things with Joker..

What do ya'll think? Do the recruits respect Joker as a coach or just like him because he's laid back, easy going and a good guy or is it somewhere in between and which would you think the recruits these days would prefer?

  • Coaches probably act a little different in the recruiting process then on the field wouldn't you say. Kind of hard to use what recruits hear in the living room and make the assumpton that Joker does not get respect from his players.

Not that I'm not saying that is not the truth. Maybe they don't respect him, I just don't think you can use this particular argument.

Yeah, do we really want to them say, Joker's a butt, too into himself but he might be intense on the field. I would take anything you hear with a grain of salt. But I would like to hear players saying after their four years that Joker and the staff prepared them for the next level.

  • Joker= "He's a good guy, he's easy to talk to." 3 Star recruits

Cal= "He gets people into the NBA" 5 Star recruits

  • Joker has only been a head coach now for 3 years. He's used to talking to recruits as an assistant trying to be like a buddy. To really recruit at a high level he needs to develop a little different approach. Who's to say whether or not he will at this point. Guys like Nick Saban have been head coaches for upteen years. Same for a guy like Cal. I believe that a guy can develop his skills. Joker is still a young coach. We'll see if he can develop into a great one. Its not impossible.

Agree 100% and hopefully the word gets out that Joker means what he says to recruits. Most coaches tell recruits what "they" want to hear.

  • The vast majority of his players love him. The admin supports him. The recruits really are enamored with him. Former players, like Jarmon, are in full support of him. A nice size portion of the fans aren't.

A win is a powerful thing. Put a few together and the fans will get behind him too.

I understand what you are trying to say, but there are way, way, way, way, way more things that differentiate Cal from Joker. It's not just Cal.......it's Cal + UK Basketball. If Joker was the HC of Bama he'd probably bring in all kinds of 4 and 5 star players.....The difference between Joker and Cal goes way beyond just sheer ability to recruit.

You are about right about if Joker was at Alabama, but the reason they're recruiting at an extremely high level is Nick Saban, his reputation of being in the NFL, past national titles, etc. But if Saban left and Joker somehow stepped in, he'd probably still be recruiting pretty good, not nearly as good, but pretty good. But I've talked to Joker before, he's an awesome guy. Saw him before the state football games in 2011, as he was headed to watch the games, so I believe the recruits are on the point with that. But I think it's just the kind of guy he is, I don't think his recruiting method would change any time soon.

  • Totally agree that Saban makes the recruiting extra special....as Cal does here at UK. Still UK in basketball and Bama in football sell themselves to a great degree. Funny isn't it. Makes you wonder just how Tubby and Billy G can bring in 3* recruits.......they should've easily brought in 4* players based off the UK name alone.

LMAO. Joker has to be here for 4 or more yrs to hear this stuff. He has to be here for the kids to say look at what he did to this player to get him ready for the next level aka Coach Cal.
People do not know much diff it is to be the head man over the asst man. He has had a huge curve to ride. in time with the better players he is getting he will be a winner either here or at another school down the road. go cats
