Jon Hood vs Kyle Kuric

  • It appears like most think we need another guard for this class. I was wondering what people think about John Hood's upcoming season. It seems to me like he could potentially be a similar player to Kyle Kuric in which case I think will be serviceable. This would make us okay at the guard position, especially if Goodwin can slide over and back up Harrow. Am I giving Hood to much credit by comparing him to Kuric?

  • I think Kuric is a better overall athlete. However, I think Hood could still be a factor because of the experience he has gotten in his first years at UK. In think he will be tentative at first because he will be coming off of that knee injury but I think later in conference play he will be able to come in and give 5-7 mins a game and then really be a 10 minute player for his senior season. Hopefully he can learn to zero in on that mid-range shot because he can make some nice moves off the dribble.

  • I look forward to seeing how Cal can develop Hood and Beckham for next year. One of them will be called upon.

  • That's not a bad comparison at all. Given opportunity, I really believe he'll be a very nice contributor before he's done at UK.

People forget that he was one of the top 35-40 prospects in the country out of high school.

Kuric isn't CLOSE to being the athlete that hood is. Hood was one of the top high jumpers in the nation as a senior. He hasn't proven to be the shooter that Kuric is nor the basketball iq, but he is a much better athlete.

I will disagree because of the sheer playing time I have seen from Kuric vs Hood; I cannot say that Hood is a better athlete when we really haven't seen him play that much since he was a frosh. I have seen Kuric play quite a bit and yes he is a better overall athlete right now. You may have a little bias on Hood and I think we will know for sure after Hood is done at UK, I would love to be wrong but only time will tell.

So you admit that you haven't seen hood. How does you not seeing him make him a worse athlete than Kuric? Color me
    Confused?

I have seen them both. Hood is a terrific athlete who needs to polish his basketball skills. Kuric is a solid athlete with very good b-ball skills. Why did Kuric look lost against us this year? Because he was 100% outmatched in terms of athletic ability. Hood needs experience and will likely get it next year because of our situation at the 2/3 spots.

Can you read? I have seem John quite a bit. Head to head with Anthony hickey, tushaun Edmonton and Scotty Hopson. He was in the same league as all of those guys.

John is a much better "athlete" than Kuric. Better b-ball player? Yet to be determined.

Now hold on; yes I can read, no need to try and insult someone on here. I disagree with you and you can either get over it or continue to try and convince me you are right. From what I have seen I don't see it but you do and that's fine, I couldn't care less about what you think about it.

John is a much better athlete than you are giving him credit for. If you are going off sheer playing time then that is the wrong way to go. Anyone who has ever touched a basketball can see how tentative Hood was out there in his very limited playing time. Kuric, on the other hand, is a staple in the UL lineup and can go out there and play free and has much more experience than John. I have seen both pretty extensively, as has hop, so if you haven't seen John other than on the floor at Rupp, then you should take what people who have into account, instead of getting all butt hurt.

You said I had not seen hood. In the post you quoted it clearly states that I had seen hood. That's why I had an issue. You either can't reaD, mis-read or tried to make something up. That's my issue. I think you are wrong. Give hood kuric's skill set and he is an all sec type player. John's issue has been developing his skills and getting game experience. Athletic ability, ie. quickness, leaping ability, speed etc.. Has never been an issue. I stand by that statement.

  • I will also add that I hope that John's injury hasn't affected his explosiveness. It's always a possibility with knee injuries. Jeff, have you had a chance to check in on that?

Maybe lateral quickness is a small issue (as it is with Kuric) defensively against the elite, but other than that I agree with you.

Ok nobody is butt hurt; you really think I care about what some random person online is saying about two players? I have seen John Hood play a few times outside of Rupp; I also saw Kuric play only at Louisville versus big time talent. I am entitled to my opinion and so are you; so who cares? You think you are right and I don't. Does it matter? No, but if you want to continue on and on about this then you have every right to. It seems like the only way you and hop will be happy if I bow down to you and say you are right. That won't happen; I really want to see Hood come back from injury and show his athleticism. I wish him the best of luck and I know what a knee injury can do. I was a collegiate football player at Morehead State and tore my MCL right before my junior season. Those are rough to come back from. I think you two are thinking that I believe that Hood is trash, but that is not the case. I was at the Kentucky Derby Festival game when Hood played and I was pumped when we came out! He is a solid player but from what I have seen I cannot whole heartedly say that his is superior in terms of athleticism compared to Kyle Kuric.

I wasn't aware I was going on and on by Ming one post (that somehow posted twice), but yea agree to disagree. I just thought you sounded butt hurt in your post, and sine you said you were basing your decision on playing time, I decided to add to the discussion. No need for anyone to 'right' here, we all just call it like we see it.

  • Kuric was nothing but a decent shooter. Hood is asked to be a complete player not just run to the corner. Hood just has to show Cal he can be a better overall player and he wil see the court.

I think Kuric was a pretty decent athlete. He atleast had leaping ability for sure (he dunked on a few people over te past couple years). His problem is he couldn't guard anyone with decent athleticism.

I agree though that Hood will have to be a more complete player to see the floor, and he will have to improve defensively to see meaningful minutes. That is why I hope his knee doesn't limit him.

    MossCat15

  • I think the comparison between the two is adequate and fairly even. I also give the athleticism edge to Hood but the bb IQ to Kuric. neither will ever be known for their defense and are nothing more than spot up shooters in college basketball though.

  • I don't think man have a clue how good Hood really is. Again, highly recruited athlete with offer to Duke compared to a walk on. Hood hasn't p,ayed because he is behind lottery picks not because he lacks talent.

  • Jon is up to about 225 and is going to be worked into a role similar to what Darius played, anywhere from the 2, 3 or 4 depending on matchups. He is expected to be fully cleared sometime in May. He's already dunking again.

You can't go off of playing time and here is why..... Pitino will play a player if all he can do is shoot because he will call plays that will put that player in position to just shoot and not do much else. Calipari on the other hand has stated that he needs you to be the whole package he needs you to do everything and if all you can do is just shoot you aren't playing much. So the coaches philosophies are different and the roster is different as well. Kuric never had a player like Eric Bledsoe or Doron Lamb and Darius Miller and MKG on the roster and because of that there were more playing time available for Kuric. If you go by your logic of saying one player is more athletic than another player because of the playing time he got then that would mean that Josh Harrellson was more athletic than Demarcus Cousins because last year during the final four run Harrellson played more minutes per game than Cousins did the season before.... So as you see you can't go off of that logic.

Also coaches would play a player more because he's got better basketball skills and that is different than athleticism. Angel Nunez who is behind Kuric by all accounts is way more athletic than Kuric but Kuric is the most basketball ready because of his basketball skills. I think this department where he is better than John Hood. There is a difference there.

Now I will agree with you there. I think Hood is asked to do WAY more in terms of driving, slashing, and making passes. And Kuric was a great leaper but his money was the corner 3pt shot. I just saw more of Kyle than John so I will have to wait and see what he can do this year. Plus now that he has been around superior talent for 3 years now I will have a better chance to see how he does.
