Josh Forest is the next Bud Dupree.

  • I know they have other players listed as his back up. I just think UK is trying to recruit 6-3 kids with speed to play that WIL LB spot. Speed kills in Minters Defense. Now that we have 2-3 kids in the rotation. Joker can take a chance on a WR or TE and move him to Defense.

I think that is what you see him trying to do with several of the DE/TE recruits. Let them try out offense, and if that doesn't work move them to Defensive End, or the other way around. Some of our starters did this, started out on offense and are immediate contributors on defense. Dupree, Caffey, Forrest, and Tiller I think is in the same mold.

  • I'm very anxious to see him this fall. He looked huge when we were at UK's camp recently. Has definitely put in some great work with Rock. Taking athletic WR types and building them into LBs is a nice tactic programs like Auburn and TCU have thrived with in recent years.

Yes I fully agree it's a great idea, however it's nice to get those kids who have been LB's there whole life that have that Avery Williamson or WKU MLB Andrew Jackson mind set... Yea I know what he said last year (Daa spose to be SEC) when we played WKU but there are alot of people who are already calling him the next great MLB, some have even compared him to Ray Lewis since he's a legit 260#er with great speed and instincts... His Highlight video is amazing... The job he done against us and LSU with 280# Dt's in front of him was unheard of. I really wish we could sign a MLB like Jackson or another like Avery. ILB, WR and OT are the three positions I think we are lacking in talent since kids like Woods, Jabari, Eatmon haven't done well thus far... I hope they can this year, we need all three to be on point in every game. GO CATS!!!

Jabari is a RS Freshman. I wouldn't lump him into that group. And to call Andrew Jackson the next Ray Lewis is tad premature IMO.

I agree...I like the staff that gets creative with positions for kids out of HS and moves them to optimal collegiate spot:

    - Jacob Tamme at WR and grooms him to TE.
    - Zipp Duncan at TE and grooms him to best OT I've seen at UK (I thought his last year better than Antonio Hall, Gary Williams)
    - Keenan Burton, Randall Cobb at QB to WR.
    - I like what I see in guys like Josh Forrest, Caffey, etc...the athletic guys are our best bet to convert into SEC legit players. It is not 100% as we've had guys like Anthony Kendrick, Nord-Eatmon, David Jones, Ridge WIlson, Gene McCaskill, etc..don't always pan out.

  • Players that have switched positions and started for UK in past 5-6 years?
-Chandler Burden -- DE to OT
-Keenan Burton -- QB to WR
-Randall Cobb -- QB to WR
-Zipp Duncan -- TE to OT
-David Jones -- WR to CB
-Matt Lentz -- QB to S
-Eric Scott -- TE to C
-Taiedo Smith -- WR to S
-Jacob Tamme -- WR to TE

I'm assuming that by Nord-Eatmon you are referring to Eatmon-Nared. I think it is a little premature to bail on a lineman before he starts his red-shirt sophomore year.

If you ain't claiming a spot at OT this year...you ain't playing down the road. If guys like Watson, Miller, West, Swindle, etc..establish themselves, it doesn't look good. Plan and simple, he didn't look good at all this spring.

I'm excited about that list of olinemen right there.

Yep they've got to be creative and innovative to compete in the SEC. Converting TE's to LB's and RB's to C or Safeties seems to be a way to really get our athleticism and speed up on the defensive side of the ball.

  • This should say something about our improvements in recruiting. We got the next Bud Dupree in the same class as Bud Dupree. That ain't bad at all.

  • I am suprised that there isnt more position switches than there is because most high school coaches have to play their players at positions that probally arent their best position for the next level for the good of the team. I have noticed two positions in particular that players seem to be put out of position in high school and they are QB and TE. The coaches put their best athlete at QB and their most athletic big man at TE. Both of these positions produce a lot of good candidates for switching to other positions at the college level. The problem is these kids are behind in the skills that they need at their new positions in college because of playing out of position in high school and must catch up before they can help their team at the college level.

That's why i really feel good about our WRs this year. We have some guys with exp and our young guys are guys that actually played WR throughout HS. I think that is huge.

We do have some good true WR's but I'm not sure what happened last year can be blamed on putting high school QB's at WR. Considering Cobb was the best WR we've ever had and he played QB in high school. We've had several others in that mold as well. Still hoping King can have a big year.

  • Great posts guys. I would imagine that HS coaches use players for the most part where they are playing the best position for them at that time in their football career. Especially at the larger high schools. Even still as another poster mentioned, many QBs, TE, and other positions need their best player even if its not his true position. In most instances the best players in their true positions get the highest rankings and go to the most desireable programs. Joker has evaluated and observed thousands of players during his coaching career and also has many coaches who also have years of evaluating experience who help critique and advise Joker as they sift through players. Many of the recruits that are offered by the middle tier programs are choices between a moderatley ranked player at his true position or a guy who shows excellent potential at an alternative position. In my opinion Joker has done well with these choices and I feel it makes him a much better coach. He doesn't have the luxury of recruits knocking on his door and yet he still seems to find players and mold them into good football players, several at new positions that they excel at.

  • I didnt say that athletic high school QBs couldnt become good WR, DBs and safetys. I do however believe it takes most of them a couple of years to grow into their new positions. A redshirt year is almost a given. Even Cobb didnt play a lot of WR his Freshman year, He was used mostly as a Wildcat QB.

Its not unusual though for even true really good WR's not to make of an impact at WR their freshman year. Especially in a pro style offense where timing is key.
