Juco WR

  • Looks like Javess Blue is going to visit UK next month. ESPN ranks him as a 4 star WR, and right outside the top 10 overall Juco players, sitting behind Za'Darius Smith in their rankings.

Does anyone know more information about this kid, was being recruited by Texas Tech and Miss St is all I know, and what does BBN think about a kid like this?

  • I think we are in pretty good shape in the WR dept. right now, the way it stands. There are some other areas of concern. But I not the coaching staff and we don't know what is really going on behind the scene with the other recruits and players we have now.

I think Smith, the other WR besides Yancey, might flip to a different school, that is something I read somewhere but can't remember exactly.

    Couldn't disagree more.

We need guys who can play now.

    1. Robinson
    2. Collins
3 Sweat - May flunk out
    4. Legree
    5. Rashad cunningham
    6. Bookie Cobbins

Only 2 of those guys are "proven" in collins and robinson. I'm not sure how good robinson can be with is lack of size. Legree and cunningham have some talent but I'm not sure what they can do.

So IMO we definetly need a juco WR and at least two frosh wr's.

We'll be playing some 5 wr sets.

    hoptownukfan

  • We aren't even close to being "in pretty good shape" at WR. We need some guys who can go up and get the ball. Collins and Robinson are shify kids but with Sweat more than likely leaving we need a kid with the ability to handle the spread O. I'd say WR is one of the biggest positions we need to fill on offense, more so than RB.

Could you imagine Locke in a system like this. I can only think he would have flourished.

Being said on other sites that Sweat will be fine. Yancy was interviewed and said that he and Brown had a great talk. Blue was originally committed to TT.

  • Stoops and Brown will upgrade the WR position. I look for Ryan Timmons, Marquez Valdes, and 1 of Ra'Shad Sample, Javess Blue, and the other TTU wr verbal..Lauderdale?
I really like Valdes..6'3 200 with 4.4 speed. Attacks the ball in the air well.

Agree with hoptown .. 2 slightly proven (Collins & Robinson) .. 2 glimpses (Sweat & Legree) .. 2 nothing yet (Cunningham & Cobbins). Whitlow may move to WR in spring, but would be in the wait and see category.

We need at least 3 and likely 4 WR in this years class to run this Air Raid. And we will have immediate playing time in this system to sell out on the recruiting trail.

    geeforCATS

  • To run a spread like Brown's you need (at a minimum) 8 and preferrably 10 WR's who can contribute. There are questions about Sweat's eligibility and who even knows about Bookie?

I dont know if you know these things but here goes. He is being recruited by 6 or 7 schools and has offers from Miss St., WVU and Texas Tech. he has just taken his official visit to TT on Dec. 7th. He is about 6'1 and 195 lbs. I think this guy would be a good catch for the Stoops staff. If you already know this stuff sorry about that but otherwise I hope this is a little help.

He was just quoted that he is fully committed to UK after talking to Coach Brown so I guess he is in. I have heard the same thing that you heard on Smith though.

I think if it doesnt work out for Whitlow at QB then moving him into a situation like Randall Cobb was in might be a good thing although I dont believe he is in the same league with Cobb.

I had known some but not all info so thank you with the information. I think someone has said he has really good speed and can be a deep threat.

He looks like a guy the staff would like top keep, but if he did flip I think the staff could land someone to fill his spot withequal or greater talent. But Smith looks to be a good sized guy at around 6'2" and have really good hands, he might not be the stud WR that people really want like Quick, but I would like to see him sign a LOI on NSD for UK.

You're right ... Whitlow is a totally different player than Cobb. He is MUCH faster, but less shifty & no where near as stout. Cobb makes his money by using his head and intangibles on the field. I personally think that Whitlow has a higher ceiling than Cobb, but I don't think he would reach it on athletic ability alone. He must move to WR full time and commit to it in the film room & in his own head (which hasn't been an issue so far).

    Cats Den

  • Sweat making it academically would be huge. We all know how good he can be. Legree is a guy that proved he has the hands and we know he has good enough size and has some special leaping ability. He'll be a year older and stronger. It depends on how hard he works and how bad he wants it. Its up to him but if he progresses like he should based on what we saw this year then we should be able to count on him next year to do some things.

We still need that 1 really big WR IMO. We've got a couple speedsters in Collings and Robinson and then we've got a couple mid size type guys one with speed in Sweat and the other a possession type of guy in Legree. We just need that one 6'4-6'6 beast, maybe one more complimentary guy and then a couple guys like Timmons and Thomas who we can get the ball to in space.

He also has experience at being a punt returner and a pretty good one at that and that adds to his value to the team.

Higher ceiling than the single season NFL all purpose yards record bc that is what Cobb is shooting for over the next two weeks? We don't have a guy on the team or anyone we are recruiting including Timmons or Quick that are in Cobb's league. Cobb is currently one of the best football players on the planet. Thus a Pro Bowler this year.

  • Jalen isn't nearly as fast as randle. Set the pipe down and come up for air

    hoptownukfan

  • we need as many playmakers as we can get at that position. The wide receiver will be taking a beating in this system. We will need backups for the back up.

Compare them both as freshman and I don't think its that far off if we're talking about straight line 40 speed.

    tWhit

  • UK needs to sign at least four WRs this class. Preferably five with at least two who can play right away.

I think tWhitt it spot on. Randle was fast but what made him special was his "quickness" if that makes since. (cutting ability, field vision, etc). To be quite honest it helped that Randall was also just a smart guy who studied the game and had the heart of a lion.

Whitlow is also special in his own way. Good speed, a real baller. I see great things for him if he keeps improving.

  • Football speed-randle is amazing. Jalen is a nice athlete hit he isn't randle Cobb

We definitely could use all the help we can get in the WR department. We have alot of potential out there, but nothing proven. With the type of offense we are running, I think the more WR's we have with experience the better.

We have a very good chance of having at least one WR with a 1,000 receiving yards next year, and I really have no idea who that might be.

Oh yeah, and Whitlow is clearly not as fast as Randall. Thats obvious to any UK fan who has watched them both play. That isn't a knock on Whitlow, I'm glad we have him and he is a great athlete but he is a differen't type of player than Randall is.
