    Higher ceiling than the single season NFL all purpose yards record bc that is what Cobb is shooting for over the next two weeks? We don't have a guy on the team or anyone we are recruiting including Timmons or Quick that are in Cobb's league. Cobb is currently one of the best football players on the planet. Thus a Pro Bowler this year.

    Yes. I believe that Whitlow has that kind of ability. What Cobb is doing this year is special, but he is also on one of the best NFL offenses in the league and he has the benefit of returning both kickoffs & punts. Whitlow would be a slot receiver solely, but can be an excellent one if he fully commits to it. Think of Wes Welker ... former Texas Tech great that is about to set his own NFL record.

    Then you are lying to yourself. Whitlow is faster. Cobb is stouter and much harder to tackle. If Cobb was that fast, he would not have been drafted so lowly (late second round).

  • Other than Dermonti Dawson Cobb may very well be the CATS best player to play in the NFL IMO. Cobb is so versatile that he makes himself very valuable to the Packers. Now I dont know all the great centers to play in the NFL but Dawson has to be 1 of the best if not the best to play in the NFL. Whitlow probably will never be in the same league with Cobb but he could be very valuable to the Cats at another position than QB. But who knows he might just win the job as QB although my $ is on Smith.

But Smith looks to be a good sized guy at around 6'2" and have really good hands, he might not be the stud WR that people really want like Quick, but I would like to see him sign a LOI on NSD for UK.

    I can't confirm this but alot of fans are reporting that Smith was one of the two recruits that the new staff said that they should look elsewhere.

    You're right ... Whitlow is a totally different player than Cobb. He is MUCH faster, but less shifty & no where near as stout. Cobb makes his money by using his head and intangibles on the field. I personally think that Whitlow has a higher ceiling than Cobb, but I don't think he would reach it on athletic ability alone. He must move to WR full time and commit to it in the film room & in his own head (which hasn't been an issue so far).

    You are much higher on Whitlow then I am, I don't think he will ever be the player that COBB is, but saying that, with him playing QB this past year, I believe Brown will give him an even tryout to win the job, and even if he doesn't win the starting job, 3 QBs are a must.

    UK needs to sign at least four WRs this class. Preferably five with at least two who can play right away.

    With our other needs, I don't think we have the numbers to get that many WRs.

    I was comparing them in terms of straight line speed only since thats what the post I was qouting was referring to. SPEED. Clearly Cobb wins in every category that goes into making a football player. At this point Whitlow is a QB. If he gets moved to WR then we can talk. But even then he'll be a different kind of player than Cobb because he'll be an outside WR not a slot WR.

    True but if he were to end up as the 3rd string QB he wouldnt be happy at that place on this team so I would think he could be very valuable playing some of the ways Cobb did when the QB thing didnt work out and to be honest it was the best thing that could have happened to Cobb.

  • Have to agree with folks who feel we have to get more WR (and thusly less of TE and possibly the bigger RB) to play in this new system.

    1. Robinson has to move to inside WR (I never liked Joker running him at outside WR spot at 5'8).
    2. Collins is a tweener...can play inside but is possibly big enough to play outside.

    After that...I have no idea what we have at WR.
    3. I'd put Legree at #3...his hands look good in short spurts but I don't know about his speed and shiftiness.
    4. Sweat is an academic issue...but on the field his running strength and speed is as close to Cobb as we'll have for a while. But his hands look poor to me and his route running may be as bad..
    5. The rest are very questionable and have no major HS credentials to give you hope they'll be adequate. Cunningham has no hands, Cobbins we've never seen.

    Put me down as we need at least an outside WR (Love would be ideal) and probably another WR (assuming SMith is out for sure) Hopefully UK can flip a very good commit to our side.

    WR and DE (maybe CB in Stoops Cover 3 as well) are the 2 spots Stoops and staff need kids at in a bad way.

  • I agree bigcat Randall single handedly carried the offense as a frosh he averaged over 5 ypc whitlow avg what 2.9 this year hes a good athlete but Cobb he is not.

    I agree with that as well. Mostly because it does some of the players a disservice. Randall Cobbs come around about once every 10 years or so. UK rarely if ever gets these guys. Who knows Stoops could change that.

    Until someone comes along of close talent I think each wide receiver, kick returner will have to live with being compared to Cobb. It's just like each successful QB over the last several years has been compared to Couch. It's going to happen no matter how right or wrong it is.

    I know I referenced Cobb as a comparison to Whitlow but only in terms of the way Whitlow may change positions and be able to carve out a place in the offense that would benefit both Whitlow and the Cats. I also said that Whitlow isnt in the same league as Cobb and that is for sure but that doesnt mean they both cant take a similar path although on different talent levels.

  • Cobb is not blazingly fast but he does have something that I think is even more important than blazing speed. He has great vision and makes players miss. It just seems he can always find the crease if there is one. The fact that he has amazing football IQ and is an outstanding leader also factors into the equation.

    I predict that someday Cobb will be an outstanding coach.

    Exactly! In fact, Cobb did break the all-time Green Bay Packers record for yards from scrimmage in a year today. He has over 2300 yards this year, breaking Ahman Greens record set in 1993. Admittedly, playing a 16 game schedule gives players of this generation an advantage but if you look at the Packers history it is near unbelievable that Cobb has done this in his second year. Lets not forget that he holds the all-time UK Touchdown record as well and did that in 3 seasons. Cobb never got credit for being as fast as he was while at UK. Not sure why. He's not the fastest on the field, but more than fast enough obviously. As for Whitlow, come on guys, he just finished his freshman year. Give him a chance to grow and learn. I think he has a great chance to help us turn this around, whether at QB or WR.

    Who is saying he wont help turn the program around whether he is at QB or at another position. I think he can be a difference maker but not to the level Randall Cobb was but that doesnt detract from what he may be able to add to the team. Most of what I have read on this thread is pro Cobb and pro Whitlow but not to the same degree.

  • Cobb ran a 4.46 which is pretty dang fast. I sure haven't seen him get caught from behind in the SEC or in the NFL.

    4.46 is blazing fast, even for the NFL that is breakaway speed. In the past recruiting services didn't really put much into verifying 40 times. That is when we saw alot of recruits listed with 4.4, 4.3 and even sub 4.3 times that weren't legitimate. I think that really hurt perception with 40 times.
