Kent State

  • ranked 25th in the AP poll. We are their only loss this season. Two teams that went in completely different directions after that game. Granted their schedule is quite weak, but I remember many people saying they were a bottom-middle of the road MAC team. Doesn't mean anything but found it surprising when I saw them listed on the poll.

I think it shows that with Smith at QB, this team actually had a decent shot to win **4-6 games (**maybe). It's been night and day when Smith was at QB compared to the other 3 (Newton, Whitlow, Towles)....

With Max Smith still walking upright, the UK offense:

325 YPG passing with a 6.6 yards per attempt rate.
The running backs averaged 6.2 YPC.
    31 ppg

    Without Max Smith:

112 YPG passing with a 4.3 yards per attempt rate.
    The RB averaged 4.3 YPC
    10 ppg

Even with Max, we still probably don't finish any better than 4-8 considering the defense we put on the field, but yes, any chance we had for even a break even season went down the tubes with his injury.

Yep good post. Shows how important it is to have an experienced solid backup QB in the fold. Newton just doesn't have it. He consistently got worse throughtout his career. Whitlow did the best he could. Really what it shows is that you need to be a defensive first football team. With a defensive minded squad you can stay in games and things don't have to be so fickle with injuries on the offensive side of the ball.

  • This means at 1-9, UK still has more wins against teams in the top 25 than Louisville who is 9-1.
