Kentayvus Hopkins

  • Any inside scoop on this kid?

Last year it looked like the flood gates opened up with interest after his UK combine test results, but it looks like the only offer he has is from WKU.

I have watched him play and to me he is as good or better than Timmons, and as fast or faster. Very shifty scat back how has some power as well. Just don't want this to be another Antonio Andrews.

    Heres his highlight film(s)

  • Is his only offer WKU? Any MAC offers at least?

  • I believe someone in the staff has already been to see him. But you do have to understand that RB is ONE position right now that we are stacked in. So if we take a RB(they have offered one), it will be have to be a great one who can catch passes out of the backfield. You can't take them all.

Timmons is faster than Hopkins..Ryan Timmons won the 100m dash in 2010 and 2011..not sure about the 2012 meet results. Timmons is a 10.8 type 100m runner...thats pretty darn fast.

You are talking track ... From what I understand Hopkins doesnt run much track. A friend of kine was telling me he ran last year at the request of UKs staff and pulled his hamstring in an early practice. Hopkins ran 4.41 40 at UKs junior camp, Timmons ran a 4.45.

JMO, but Kentayvus is the exact kind of kid the new staff needs to pull from instate talent...

A "KENTUCKY" kid that's not only athletically talented...But is also a dependable, accountable, determined, overachieving, workaholic, self-starter that's motivated to beat expectations on a daily basis.

We've lost a lot of games with that philosophy through the years. We need the quick's and Timmons, not the Hopkins'...

I couldn't agree more. We have got to elevate recruiting to grab the best players we can, whether they are from Kentucky or Alaska. Cal doesn't recruit Kentucky kids for the sake of recruiting instate kids. Why should Stoops ? 4 years from now, no one will forgive him for a poor record, just because he has a roster of " dependable, accountable, determined, overachieving, workaholic, self starters" from the state of Kentucky, who couldn't win in the SEC.

    70scat

  • You need elite players in this league to just contend. Stoops understands that and is taking steps to improve that with a little success next year we could see a huge jump in recruiting and i think this class finishes well.

    quagmire

  • I wasnt saying I wouldnt take Hopkins..re read my post and you'll see..I was merely stating Timmons is quicker..Hopkins has ran track..look up khsaa track ..Timmons is a 4.3 40 kid. Runs a 10.8 100m. But I agree..catcard you make good points...I think Uk should take more homebred kids. THese kids WANT to play here..its more than just a ride to them..its an honor. Just imagine if we had all the top in state kids on our roster...Lamar dawson, JOn Davis, Josh Green, ect ect..
Personally..I think Kentayvious Hopkins would fit well in Browns "air raid" offense..tall, rangy back with good speed and great hands..could easily motion out into the slot..at 6'1 190..bring his 4.4 speed to bear on a LB..or SS. This offense will catch the defense in a mismatch and play speed football..looking to get a fast reciever..be it a TE/RB..or a traditional wideout..matched up on a slower saftey or linebacker.I think a kid like Hopkins could be a weapon in this offense.

Great point. Stoops will always take a ky kid if he can help us..but he isnt going to take a kid just cuz hes from here either. We will get the best players we can sign regardless of where they come from..thats why in 3 or 4 years you will see tons of Fla,Ohio,Ga, ect..and mabye 3 to 4 Ky kids a year.on our rosters!

But if he is just a RB, with what we have coming back and the needs that we have all over, do you keep on stacking the depth on ONE position. Sometimes the stars doesn't line up for you, it isn't really anybody fault. Plus the former staff left the new staff with very little wiggle room with what they recruited earlier.

  • My focus was all on the intangibles Kentayvus has displayed being included in the equation w/ the talent/potential he has also shown as an athlete.
I made no distinction as to whether this staff would offer or not...( I would guess it'll probably be a Preferred or Gray-shirt opportunity due to the RB #'s you mention above. )

(At 6'1" 195lbs - 4.45...w/ multiple yrs worth of film on the kid...He's a player worth considering, even if it's as a LB/SS - positions he's also played.)

But that still doesn't change the fact that he's the KIND of INSTATE KID that Stoops, Brown & Co should target. Someone that's worked for yrs to wear the colors & wants nothing more than to represent the BBN. Someone that's shown the discipline & consistency in the process that Stoops spoke about in his opening pressers. And one has the athletic tools to help UK win, at some point in the next couple yrs.

JMO, But there has to be a place for a few of these kinds of kids in each recruiting class...Guys that bleed-blue & have the athletic potential to be a solid contributors down the line.

If Hopkins were a WR, LB or DE he'd probably be a little higher on the pecking order.. I think he's a solid HS player, but, more than likely, there's a reason no other SEC, B10, B12 teams have offered.. Players like him, Jonathan Jackson, the kid from Knox Central, the DL from OB Cath are all really strong Ky HS players, but, like I said, there's a reason most of those kids have Sun Belt, MAC and OVC offers..Nothing wrong with that, but, you really have to be the elite of the elite to play and compete in the SEC..

    bluecatntn

  • I'd love to get him as a redshirt earn your way to a scholly player. Like a JD Harmon. If everything Catcard is saying is true.

You may have seen it but every profile site on him that I have read lists him at 5'11", 185 lbs, with a 2 star rating. I think we need to get past recruiting players that we have to prepare for a position instead of one who excelled at it.

    UKlaw82

  • Well, LAW...247 has him at 6'1 - 185 - 4.45...Scout has him at 5'11" - 185...Rivals has him at 5'10" - 190. W/ most of there info being JR yr....So, Take your pick.

All I know is the kid ran a 4.41 at UK's camp this past summer...Had a phenomenal yr at Bourbon Co. (led them on another deep play-off run) & has shown himself to be a hell of a instate talent.

Besides you just saying it, can you provide any evidence that he ran a 4.41 at uk last year?

If you watch the video it says on the opening screen. I cant find combine results from the junior day, but i have heard from many different people involved with Hopkins that it was laser timed and that timmons had the same time at the combine.

There are many athletes with that size and speed not heavily recruited ... Chris Johnson, derrick locke, danny woodhead, randle cobb, ... Just to name a few.
