Kentucky falls to 8th in AP Poll

Oklahoma St, Indiana, Louisville, Duke, Florida, Ohio St, Syracuse, Colorado, UNC, Michigan That's 10 and I could probably name a couple more.

Oklahoma State? They have played 4 games, winning them all. Their offense has not measured up to Kentucky's, while their defense has been compatible with UK's. Therefore, they have not been playing better than UK has been playing. Nice try, but you can do better than that.

Colorado? They have also played 4 games, with offensive results less impressive than Oklahoma State's and defensive results that are not nearly as stingy and UK or Oklahoma State.

The rest of the teams you mention are playing better basketball than either of these two reaches, but none of them, save Indiana, in the early going have been as efficient as UK has been.

Oklahoma St has beaten a good Tennessee team and #6 NC State. Colorado has beaten Dayton, #16 Baylor, and a very experienced and good Murray St team. UK Barely squeeked by a bad Maryland team, got beat by Duke, and won against a nobody. By the end of the year UK would slaughter Colorado and win against Oklahoma St. But right now they are playing better than UK. I know because I've seen them all play. Who cares if UK has been more efficient? Does efficiency take into account opponent? Maybe UK does have a more efficient team than the ones I listed. But the teams I listed are playing better basketball. Which is understandable considering we're all freshmen.

  • By the way, I was being facetious with my last post. UK would beat most teams right now. Granted some of the better teams would beat us this early simply because we are so young and don't have everything put in. The good thing is we don't have to play another top 25 team until the end of the month. After that the end of the year. That's plenty of time to get the kinks worked out and be playing like a top 5 team.

As for the numbers Sleepy provided. It should be noted that Pomeroy has the Cats as the second most efficient team at this moment. If you look at his history the National Champion has come out of his top 5 nine times out of the last eleven years. The two anomalies featured college basketball's best player those years. Carmelo Anthony and Syracuse in '03 and Kemba Walker and UConn in '11. My point is looking at those numbers alone doesn't tell the whole picture. It does highlight teams weaknesses, but it is a far better predictor when looking at those numbers as a whole.

  • I would say that UK is top 10 right now.

But, does it really matter? This team isn't trying to go for best record.

This team is trying to win the NCAA at the end of the year. They are already playing better than i thought. I remember Coach Cal's first year when we gave up so many open looks, and this team is already better about closing out on these.

This team by end of the year will be fantastic. It's hard to tell where UK is at because
    1. currently numbers aren't very accurate because of small sample size, and
    2. most of the teams haven't played against this many good teams as UK has. Keep in mind also playing KY, teams are bit more motivated. Team like Maryland will play better against UK than against bad teams. They have the physical assets, so when they come to play it's a lot harder to win against.

  • No it doesn't matter at all. What truly matter in college basketball is which teams have enough talent to make a run at a National Title at the end of the year.

  • Oh and by the way we are without question one of those teams this year. Not sure there are but a handful. A couple will surprise but they won't take home the bacon. Coaching is a big factor as well but its usually the coaches with the most talent that can already coach anyway.

  • After watching them play last night if you still think they are a top 10 team right now I don't know what to tell ya.

  • Offensively, yes. On the defensive end, no. They have a ways to go on defense. If they can catch up to their offensive abilities then this team might be the best in the country.

That will only happen if they improve on that end. The good thing is that Cal almost always has his teams playing solid D. Give them a month and it will be exponentially better.

Nate, the stats I quoted were from the NCAA site and I was onlt trying to indicate how far we have to go before we deserve a top 5 to 10 ranking. I have no doubt we will get there but we arent there now. Unfortunatly you have to take a team as a whole when ranking them and you are right KYs defense has a ways to go but the offense does also because we really dont have a PG now although Goodwin is trying hard to fill that void. and with his offensive outburst lastnight I can only imagine how much better he may become if he gets to play his natural position.

  • I think Goodwin will be fine if he has to play the point. He will be more like Tyreke so he won't be dishing out a ton of assists, but that's not really what we need him to do. We just need him to make the right play. That will come with more practice and game experience under Cal.
