Kentucky out of NCAA Tourney field

Kentucky won't get a chance to defend its 2012 national championship banner in the NCAA Tournament. The Cats did not earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

  • Is a sad day in Lexington. The pieces just didn't fall this year. It started with Harrow "getting sick". Goodwin then put in at the PG position where he wasn't comfortable. They started getting acquired to this, then Harrow comes back. They just didn't gel. What a kick in the teeth though. I just hope next year is better for the Cats and BBN. Very disappointed. I thought this group would be fun to watch. I wish them all good luck in whatever their future holds for them.

  • Going to be a very boring march for me. Not really interested in the tourney if the cats aren't in it. No march madness flu for me this year!

  • Agreed UKaveman...but i will watch the Cats in the NIT regardless.

  • Calipari speaks, via Twitter:

I’m really disappointed we didn’t make the NCAA Tournament but we are going to use this time to make us better. We had our chances, but I’m not going to stop. It’s a great lesson for the future of our program & a humbling experience for me as a coach.

"Even now, I’m going to coach these guys, try to make them better & give everything I can to make sure we control our destiny in the future."

  • He adds: To the #BBN, you did your part all season long. You showed up in droves and helped us pull through key games. We didn’t do our part.

  • Personally, I didn't think UK deserved to be in the tournament until you consider the resumes of Middle Tennessee, LaSalle and St. Mary's.

The NCAA Selection Committee's criteria seems to change every year and usually only serves to justify its own picks after the fact.

That said, UK failed to make the tournament in one of the weakest college basketball years in a long time, a really down year in the SEC and one of the weakest bubbles in recent years. They still controlled their own destiny and the blood is still on their hands. Beat either Arkansas, Georgia or Vandy (none of which made the tourney) and they're in.

  • Beat any of those teams, true, but none of those games were close and UK didn't stand a chance in any of them. Very flat showings every time.

  • Chris,
How do you think Cal will use this seasons team and their difficulties for the future of the program from this point foward?

    chazwm

  • In no way do I think cal got complacent but I think he did get comfortable with his model for uk and it bit him this year. I think this will force him to challenge his assumptions and I don't think he will ever get caught short handed again.

    ukaveman

  • Well at least John Clay and the rest at the "Herald-Leader" are happy, and all those who trashed the SEC basketball teams by consistently writing how weak the league was this year.Funny thing though,Missouri gets in and UK does'nt.
Anyway,Cal made his bed with his one-and-done program, brought in some guys who did'nt buy in,and now must pay the price.
Sadest part of all,he may be stuck with these characters next year.

  • If they stay, they'll be coming off bench, which could be good news for UK as depth is sorely, sorely lacking.
