With the implementation of the new ncaa rules, how would you approach the kicking game? Do you pooch kick the ball and pin a receiver back between the goal and the 25? Do you squib kick? How about punting for a kickoff ( since it is a free kick, I believe the rules allow you to choose)? Just curious what all you coaches think.
Depends who I would be playing. If I'm playing Kent St then I would try to pin them deep. If I'm kicking to a dangerous UF return man then I may boot it out of the end zone and not give him the opportunity.
I suppose the ideal thing would be to kick it as high as you can and have it land 1 yd deep in the end zone....in the corner if able. This requires a very good kicker. The height allows your coverage to close in and being 1 yd deep allows the kicker to hesitate and make the decision to bring it out or take a knee.
Personaly I wouldn't ever try to kick it barely into the endzone by the corner - too much risk of it going out of bounds and giving the other team really good field postion.
I kind of like just kicking it through the endzone as much as possible. Perhaps if a couple guys step up as really good special team players maybe I'd kick it a bit short of the goal line and try to pin the opponent deep.
There's nothing wrong with mixing it up a bit too, as long as our guys know the call before the ball is kicked.
