Kirby Smart (Bama fan here)

  • It was reported on WJOX, a radio station in Birmingham, that UK officials were in Tuscaloosa to check Kirby Smart's interest in the Kentucky job. Is there any chance that there is truth to this?

No inside info here, but I would expect UK to be interested in Kirby Smart. Fiery young defensive minded coach who has coached under the best and could recruit GA well. But I'd be very surprised if those rumors were accurate re UK reps being in Tuscaloosa today. Sounds a little far fetched. If UK reps were there today, I would think it may instead be to view facilities given hopes of a renovation of Commonwealth Stadium.

  • I heard this rumor earlier today on Twitter from the CJ Sports Guys (i believe)

  • Smart is my #1 choice. You offer him 2.5 million and if he says no you say 3 million and so on and so forth until he says yes.

Smart would be a hire everyone in BBN would get behind, and be excited about the future of our program.
I would Love Kirby Smart as our head Coach hes at the top of my list.

  • From what I gather there were UK reps on Bama's Campus, but they were evidently there to check into some used training equipment at a facility they're renovating. Apparently, they weren't there because of Smart or the coaching search. Would have been shocked if that story had had any legs. 1) I don't think Mitch's search is beyond the phone calls and feelers stage and 2) if UK were going to meet with a candidate, I don't think it would be on their current employer's home turf.

I do hope Smart is contacted and would love it if we hired him, but I can't see him risking his budding career on a meat grinder program like Uk.

  • I'm afraid Smart is going to have better opportunities. We've got to sell him on UK and sell him hard.

  • Honestly with the jobs that will be coming open, what do you all consider "better options?" Tennessee and Arkansas? Is that it? I don't think Auburn will be available. . . I don't think Smart is going to be Tennessee or Arkansas' number 1 choice.

Also, what happens if Dooley ends up 8-5? They have a real shot at that. UT has Vandy, UK, and an out of conference game left on their schedule. They could very easily win those three to get to 7-5 regular season and then head to Birmingham to play a Conference USA team. I'm not sure UT fires a coah with 8 wins and a $5 million buyout.

  • I don't believe that UK would send a delegation in UK gear to the Alabama football offices to talk to an Alabama assistant nor do I think Saban would allow it to take place like that. These contacts are done in private and usually through third parties. UK just opened a search and lots of good coaches are available. Making a public move like has been rumored here this early will alienate a lot of good prospects by making them see that Smart is the guy we want first. We can't afford to turn any good candidate off for any reason. I think this rumor is false. It is possible that UK spoke with Saban to get his advice in general but I don't feel we would do this in public.

Assuming UK "just opened a search" is foolish.

    ^^^what he said^^^

Don't think that because Joker was just fired that a decision hadn't been already made. If you paid attention, people on this board even pointed out that a move may be made during the open week. If Mitch knew at the beginning of October that he was not going to bring Joker back, he still would not have said anything before now. You have to let things play out. While we all might not agree with everything MB has done, you can't just rush decisions like this.

Dooley is toast, doesn't matter what happens from here on out, the decision has been made already.
