    Besides Miller, Billy G. signees Josh Harrellson and DeAndre Liggins both went in the second round of the 2011 draft and Patrick Patterson and Daniel Orton both were first-round picks in 2010. [/b]

  • Everyone gave him credit for that Dee Brown/Deron Williams class the Ilini had when Self was there but it's readily apparent to me that the guy just throws a really big net, tries to offer them young and then a couple actually pan out and people in the business laud him.

    *begin gratuitous ego stroking*I predicted that UK would hire him and I was the first off the bandwagon.*end gratuitous ego stroking* The guy may be a great assistant (the evidence supports that) but he's an absolute disaster as a head coach. I would hire him to wipe the counter at a Denny's.

  • HAHA. Billy G may have recruited some talented players, but he sure as heck didn't know how to develop them.

    ^This. Billy G threw a really big net and signed some very talented players. However he didn't know how to develop them at all. Would love to see what Jorts, Liggins or Miller could have done with 4 years under Coach Cal.

  • I don't know if Harrellson, Miller or Liggins would have developed under BCG, but they certainly would have been tougher. haha.

    Reading that list just made me throw up a little. The scary thing is, I remember being excited about each of those guys, except for Euton who I even said then was the worst UK commitment ever.

    It's funny. Euton was ranked in the top 25 of his class very early in his high school career. Just goes to show you how much developing (or lack thereof) factors in. Had a nice stroke especially for his size but had about the least amount of athleticism maybe I've ever seen from a D-I prospect.

    I think when Florida offered, Gillispie almost felt pressured into offering him. Couldn't lose a key in state recruit just weeks after he took the job.

    Euton was a great kid though. Feel for him.

    You know, as crazy as that looks all listed together, I think it's ok to have a few of those guys IF they're surrounded by studs. The big question is would Clyde have continued to get enough elite players to keep UK at its lofty standards. I'm not sure he could have.

  • I don't think the article was meant to prop up Billy G, moreso to disprove what Jay Bilas said about Cal doesn't deserve credit for coaching anyone up to get drafted.

    It would have been interesting to see Bledsoe, Orton, and Hood play for him. If Bledsoe would have committed which I've heard would have been very likely.

    They more or less quit on him during that home loss on Senior Night to Georgia.

    They did. He thought he could be a hard ass and create toughness and then his teams would make a run late and be as good as anybody but it just didn't work like that for him here.
