He's absolutely right about a couple of things.
1- If UK thinks they'll be back to having 65,000 fans in the stands for every home game, regardless of who they hire, they've lost their mind.
2- The fanbase finally caught on to the fact that the administration hasn't given the football progrom a fighting chance. As a result, MANY long standing fans that bought tickets no matter what have finally decided enough is enough.
For the first time in 50 years, UK is going to be forced to earn many of the fans back. If they don't make big investments and promote football like they should, many of the fans will stay home.

Is this our goal? We are doing great because look at our past? This is the same kind of self-defeating attitude that has kept UK in the SEC basement for 50 years.
It's time to set the bar a little higher. It's time someone at UK has the vision to take our football program to new heights. If we don't intend to compete for a SEC championship then why are we even playing football?

Vaught is exactly right.
A hire like Butch Jones, Sonny Dykes, or someone similar will not bring many fans back. While they may or may not be successful, they will have to win, compete, and do it often for fans to start coming back.
The difference between a Butch Jones and a Petrino hire can mean tens of millions of dollars over a 2-4 year period, when you consider 65000 fans to 35000 fans or less.
Another huge problem is that fans who are wanting Petrino will likely not back the new hire if UK did not at least try to sign him. Now, if Petrino turned UK down, I would understand that, and then I could find myself getting behind a different coach. However, if UK fails to try and hire Petrino, then I just see that as the same old lack of administrative support that there has been for 40+ years. I will expect nothing to change, and I won't bother to get season tickets again or attend any games.
If the UK administration is unwilling to put their full support into something, why should I put my full support into it?

It doesn't take a genius to know that Mitch offeded a lot of the football fanbase last year when he called them a "Microwave Society" for being down on Joker Phillips in what was obvious to many a failed experiment in the making. Ticket sales plummeted.
He took it a step further just a few week back when he went on the radio and declared the fans that aren't on board with Joker must have a "personal agenda" against him, essentially hinting that race was a factor in fan dissaprovement.
Since then, he has dodged the fans and the media to address the situation and lay out his vision for the program. That is an extremely poor decision and is portrayed as WEAK leadership.
Mitch has to accept part of the responsibility of UK football fans walking away for the first time in decades. He's partronized many of them, and has done nothing to try to woo them back.
He's probably a great man, but he's an absolute PR fiasco.
