Vaught is exactly right.
A hire like Butch Jones, Sonny Dykes, or someone similar will not bring many fans back. While they may or may not be successful, they will have to win, compete, and do it often for fans to start coming back.
The difference between a Butch Jones and a Petrino hire can mean tens of millions of dollars over a 2-4 year period, when you consider 65000 fans to 35000 fans or less.
Another huge problem is that fans who are wanting Petrino will likely not back the new hire if UK did not at least try to sign him. Now, if Petrino turned UK down, I would understand that, and then I could find myself getting behind a different coach. However, if UK fails to try and hire Petrino, then I just see that as the same old lack of administrative support that there has been for 40+ years. I will expect nothing to change, and I won't bother to get season tickets again or attend any games.
If the UK administration is unwilling to put their full support into something, why should I put my full support into it?

In ten years at UK, uk has went 22-58 in the SEC the last 10 years I think...The ten before Mitch got there, I think they got around 18-19 wins, may be off a tiny bit on that number...So basically under the great Reign of Mitch, we got 3-4 more SEC wins....took a step back the first 7 years in basketball when Mitch came on board...he was afraid of Tubby and hired Billy G...took Mike Pratt getting involved to get Cal...Cal has his OWN basketball AD.....
NOBODY in the BCS conference world gives a big crap about any other sports than football and Basketball...nobody...who cares about records in other sports, really, who does...nobody because the only REASON those other sports exist is because of football mainly and basketball...

Petrino left a top 10 team for Kragthorpe. It isn't Petrino's fault that Krags was a terrible coach and even worse at coach to player communication. Kragthorpe ruined the Louisville program, not Bobby Petrino.
One of the biggest bunch of BS that was often spewed when Krags began to struggle.

Interestingly, Kragthorpe improved the offense in 2007 after taking over from Petrino. UL averaged over 500 ypg in 2007, compared to 450ish under Petrino. It did this despite losing its leading rusher to the NFL draft.
It was a horrendous defense, led by a holdover defensive coordinator, that cost UL wins in 2007.

That and the fact that the stuff that Petrino put up with from POS players Krag did not. I agree Kragthorpe was not the best man for that job but, he did have a mess to clean up when Petrino left. There was a mass exodus at UL of players that were know to be issues in the locker room / off the field, etc.
All I'm saying is he is a man of poor character and thus recruits players that are of poor character and puts up with arrests / problems in the locker room, etc. Then, when he leaves, you start all over again. Ask UL and Arkansas who was a top ten team while he was there and nothing when he is gone...

I have a friend that played under Petrino. There were never any locker room problems you speak of. Also Petrino recruited some rough kids, but they feared and respected him, which in turn played their hearts out for the man. The issue was Jurich bringing in someone on the other end of the spectrum, Krags, who lacked discipline and therefore the players took advantage of his lackluster oversight of the program.
Basically just more crap being spewed to make Petrino look bad.

Might want to go do some research on, let's see, South Carolina, Arkansas, LSU, Ole Miss, Miss. State, Texas, USC, UCLA, Virginia, Miami, Florida State, North Carolina, Stanford, Georgia Tech, Arizona State, etc., etc. and see if those schools and their fan bases care about anything other than football and basketball (hint: baseball)

In respone to 1. Who said UK would have 65,000 fans in the seats no matter who they hired?
2. This UK administration with Barnhart has committed more football than any administration in history and the product on the field is as good as it's been outside the last two seasons in the last 50 years. With the potential bonding deal coming this winter we could see the upgrades we all know we need.
3. I agree to an extent but folks are ignoring that uk was in a modern day golden era just. 4 years ago for uk football standards. We've had a taste and now we expect more. That's a good thing. Mitch knows this. That's why he fired joker and is trying to get a big time coach to uk.

How can a person who sits by & allows a large funding source dry up be one of the best in the country? That non-revenue sports feed off that drying up source doesn't compute to being one of the best in the country. Skip the Directors/Presidents/Whatever Cup standings when in fact it's built on a house of cards nor reflects the full importance of football to the bottomline.

First of all I have read a ton of your post. But to say this about a man I know very well makes you look like an idiot to me. I don't care how others feel bro but this is so stupid of a post by you. Larry speaks the truth and holds little back in this story.
He is not putting the AD down for his past hires. Just his lack of letting the people (who pays his way the fans) know about what is going on and how it is being done by him.
And for this little fact for ya Larry and Mitch have a very good relationship. He like all of us want ans since we are the ones who pay the cash.
PERIOD.
