Last true freshman to make an impact

  • I am trying to come up with a quick list of true freshmen who can subjectively be considered to have made a major impact in the last 20 years. So far I've got Randall Cobb, Derek Smith, Antonio Hall, and DeWayne Robertson. Who am I missing?

  • Wow. Great topic. If just looking at the Brooks-Joker Era, Cobb is the biggest by far IMO. What other frosh have made big impacts since Brooks arrived? Sobering question if you're counting on freshmen to help you out.

I think Josh Clemons was well on his way to having an impact last season until his injury.

Yeah after that game against CMU I had the same hope...looked really promising until his injury

I guess that depends on what you deem to be 'major impact', but...

Wesley Woodyard was beginning to come into his own before getting injured late in the year. Keenan Burton had an impact his first season. Micah Johnson (29 tackles) and Braxton Kelley (who got injured after recording 44 tackles and starting first 7 games of career). Derrick Locke had huge impact after Rafael Little got hurt in 2007. Tim Masthay handled every punt as a true freshman. Corey Peters had strong freshman season. Garry Williams started 8 games as a true freshman on O-Line. Larry Warford too.

Those are just some guys off the top of my head who played significant roles for UK as true freshmen.

  • I think Derrick Locke stepped in quite well. If I remember correct it was after an injury to Little. I remember him running strong against LSU.

  • Trevathan played good as a freshman.

Yeah that was big. Similar to that Dupree played a big role in us beating UT last year. Which was monstrous.

  • Contrary to what was previously stated uk has had some success. Aaron miller was a freshman all American as was Braxton Kelly. Raph little, Derrick Locke and Clemons all contributed. Keenan burton and Michael Strickland were both very good on offense.

Not very sobering at all. Unless you have an agenda and ignore reality.

Was about to post the exact same thing. Ran tough in that game.

  • Mo Williams was a pretty good freshman running back. I believe he falls in the 20 year range.

Ahh, totally forgot about Aaron Miller. He was terrific as a frosh. As for Little, he barely played due to a knee injury. Tony Dixon got almost all of his carries. Locke was good as well. So was Keenan. I don't think we can say Clemons was an impact frosh since he really only played a couple of games. Still, most true frosh aren't in a position to be "impact players". Especially now with the depth that Joker has established.

Michael Strickland only had one catch all season, so I'm not sure I'd count him, but most of the rest of those for sure. Forgot about Aaron Miller. He was really good.

Didn't Miller have some back problems? Or am I thinking of Micah Jones?

Jones did. Aaron Miller, if I remember correctly, was very shy and got homesick and just kind of gave up football to return home. He tried to come back later but it didn't really work out.

Well, based on the other thread where you were talking about Bud Dupree being a returning starting, how do you feel about him being a true freshman who made a major impact?

I thought Strickland was gonna be really good too! The one catch was an awesome over the shoulder grab falling out of bounds on the sideline against Ole Miss at home. Whatever happened to him? If I remember correctly, he left after "violating team rules" which usually means failed a drug test on the collegiate level.

  • as far as true feshman playmakers though, they are few and far between. That's why I'm worried about this season. We are expecting too many true freshman and rs freshman to step up. You never know though, 1 randal Cobb can make all the difference in the world.

We had two Olinemen as freshman that were starters, were good, and then left. One was Aaron something from KY.....

The other was around the Hal Mumme era, or Guy Morris era. Name was Kip or something like that...from Colorado.

  • Jeffries, I agree with you. Matt and Chris...if this is all off the top of your heads, that pretty impressive in my book.
