Last true freshman to make an impact

  • Chiuk said...

We had two Olinemen as freshman that were starters, were good, and then left. One was Aaron something from KY.....

The other was around the Hal Mumme era, or Guy Morris era. Name was Kip or something like that...from Colorado.

You're right, Kip Sixberry from CO. Played very well as a true freshman. Never finished out here. It was like he lost interest in football or something.

That's it! Kip Sixberry. Blast from the past but i'm 99.999% sure he started and did very well as a frosh. Thanks for the reminder.

Bluegrass Baron: Yes, Brad Pyatt was solid as well. Didn't he and Sixberry come from the same school?

Jeffries, I agree with you. Matt and Chris...if this is all off the top of your heads, that pretty impressive in my book.

Hahahaha. I remember weird stuff. But ask my wife if I can remember basic stuff and she might give you different answer. :)

Yea, I knew you were right about him starting as a freshman. He did make a major impact. So I then decided to look up the details.....

Sixberry started all 11 games in 1999 as a true freshman, earning some post-season honors. Started 9 games the following season as a Soph. Sat out the following year as academically ineligible, eventually just leaving....said he wasn't sure if he even wanted to play football anymore. Had NFL talent.

Kip was from Littleton, Co. and played HS at Denver Mullen

    Pyatt played at Arvada West.

  • Lonnell Dewalt had a pretty good single year between the blocked kicks and receiving.

  • The question was "who made an impact"? Just playing as a freshman only shows that you have "no depth" and is not a defination of an impact player.

Who as a freshman won a game with his skills either running, passing, kicking or making a game saving tackle on defense?

    That is an "impact" player.

  • Was pyatt the white receiver from Texas?

  • I think Keenan Burton...but lately...has to be Randall Cobb right? Kid came in and played qb and held up well..had Ut beat untill Wide Left Lonas (Seiber) shanked a couple gimme game winning FG's.
    Josh Clemons, Rafael Little, Locke...
    Bud Dupree played well late..
DB wise..Lindley, Burden Quentin McCord (LB)

So by your definition of "impact player" nobody on defense qualifies?

I would think that an OL or DL who starts all games as a freshman would be considered an "impact" player....as playing these positions is not easy feat.

Also, Kip Sixberry and Aaron Miller won numerous post-season awards. Kip Sixbery was First Team Freshman all-sec and First Team Freshman All-American by Sporting News. Same or Miller.

I would say that equals "impact" as a freshman.

Now, if the rules have been changed to only include "skill" impact players, then that would be different....but I'm not sure that's how the original post came across.

Good point. 3687 passing yards his freshman season with 19 TDS (21 Ints). Kind of hard to believe but he threw for almost 10,500 yards in his career and had 78 TDs.

    He was a redshirt freshman.

  • Lorenzen played with no fear. I think he also brought a lot of UK basketball fans over to the football side. Come to think of it I was about 19 when he was here and I was at UK and he brought me to UK football.

  • To contribute immediately you have to be 1a Physically Mature and 1b Mentally Mature. To make an IMPACT you have to be exceptionally mature in both.

We hardly see freshman WR contribute much mainly beacuse of the intricacies of them needing to read the defensive coverage. So I doubt any of the true frosh contribute much there.

RB has been proven time and time again that if you're physically mature enough you can make waves. We have 2 beastly RB's coming in in Mobley and Taylor. Taylor was an ALABAMA recruit, that says volumes about his potential, Mobley has been singled out by Joker as the type of mauler that can carry the rock every down.

OL/DL are spots where we will see some of these freshman contribute but I don't think any will make large impats in the stat books, but they will be able to spell the starters that can make the impacts this year.

To find the kids that are going to make the biggest impact unexpectadly you need to look at the RS Freshman and True Sophmores.
Darrian Miller and Bud Dupree have already held their own, they will take another step in development and leadership.

Along with the other true freshman that played last year.
    Max Smith
    Demarco Robinson
    Clemons

Then add in Colins, Cobbins, and Cunningham and you've got a crop of kids that have has a year to learn the system and mature.

Outside of RB the biggest impact will com from these RS Freshman IMO

Welcome thumbsup Feel free to post more often!

Lorenzen was so much fun to watch as a freshman. Was a total gunslinger. A lot of ups and downs though. Still think that team would have been better served with Dusty Bonner starting and easing Lorenzen into things.

The over the head pass to Derek Homer was unreal! Was there for the game at home against Georgia where he passed for I believe 528 yards.

Went to high school and played basketball with Keenan at Manual. Was sophomore at UK when he made that touchdown catch against Louisville in the opener. I was hyped.

and caffey is expected to possibly start at Corner.

Whoever said Lonnell Dewalt on up some was spot on. Dewalt would have been something special if he hadn't had a crappy attitutde towards school.
He was such a kick blocking machine fulmer ran a 4th down play instead of kicking a field goal.
Didn't he set the SEC single season record in blocked kicks?

  • I just don't agree because a kid plays as a freshman he is an "impact" player. But to each his own.

I do know this. When UK can never play a freshman they will be better than they are now.
