Lexington, KY- Where To Live?

  • I'm very close to securing a position in Lexington, Kentucky, but I begin with little knowledge of the city.

Currently, I reside in a lively, young area outside of Detroit. I'd like to find in a similar area in or near Lexington. I'm nearing 30-years-old and wish to stay in a young, educated area.

What areas should I consider? Please be as specific as possible, I've never been to Lexington and it appears to be an exciting area.

(Mods, please move this thread to the proper board)

  • Lexington isn't a huge city, only about 300k total population, so there aren't really too many "areas".

I would reccomend looking somewhere near downtown (either central or southside tend to be more what it sounds like you are looking for), Chevy Chase is a nice part of town as well.

  • Stay away from north of downtown.

  • If you're young and want to stay close to the action, there are plenty of places close to downtown that should be perfectly suitable.

Coming from an area with 4.5 million people, I find the modest population attractive. I enjoy less urban sprawl.

Lexington appears to have a consolidated center, I will begin exploring the central and south sides. The north is the shadier side of town?

    Lawre167

  • Yeah North is probably the "shaddy" part of time.

Aas someone already mentioned, the Chevy Chase (Chinoe RD) area is really nice.

The areas around downtown are great for a young man who wants to be close to the action. Get a good realtor and they will be able to pinpoint for you great condos and townhouses available around that area. Welcome to Lexington.

Totally agree with this. I lived a few blocks from downtown for 8 years until about 6 months ago and loved it. Now I'm out in the 'burbs and want to go back. lol

I'd recommend Karen Deprey as an agent. I've worked with her a few times and always had good experiences. Really knows the downtown area well.

As for specific neighborhoods, South Hill is a great place to live but has gotten pretty pricey over the last 5-10 years. Kenwick is an up-and-coming area near downtown you might check out. It's east of downtown, bordered (more or less) by Richmond Rd to the south, Walton Ave to the west and Henry Clay to the east. There are a few streets in the area which are still a little funky, but for the most part its a really nice area and very close to downtown.

Compared to what he may be used to, I don't know if anywhere in Lexington would be considered shady. cool

The whole Harrodsburg/Nicholasville/Tates Creek venue is true. Great areas to live. Not so good if you're looking to.get on the interstate to get away. Any of those roads listed, add 30 mins to your trip....each way.

Hamburg area on the East side is much better for interstate access. Many restaurants....many bars and clubs.

    Downtown YES!!!! Hamburg maybe.....Southside...NO!!!

  • Harrodsburg Road/Circle 4/Man O War area (Palomar/Stonewall/Beaumont) is a great spot. Two minutes from the airport, easy access to downtown, plenty of nice little restaurants.

As USMC said, it is a bit of a pain to get on the interstate, but generally only if you're trying to fight Circle 4 traffic at rush hour.

  • The Chevy Chase and Ashland Park areas are great. Very pedestrian friendly with local eateries, bars, and shopping. Can't go wrong there. Those areas which are adjacent to each other and are centrally located with great architecture. Older area with lots of charm.

As a resident of the "north" thank you for your fine remarks.

  • We lived in Firebrook off Harrodsburg rd. We loved the neighborhood there. I'm not sure what your looking for but I would almost guarantee Lex Vegas has it. Its really an awesome town.

  • I appreciate all your advice.

I'm excited to "return" to Kentucky. Though I've never lived in Kentucky, I absolutely love it. My grandparents moved the family up from Murray, KY in the 1940's and I've driven down to visit other family members 10+ times.

Detroit is and always will be my home (it's far more eclectic and exciting than nationally portrayed), but if I were to move to any other state in the Union it would be Kentucky.

Only bad in the Suburb areas. If you are Centrally located no problems at all. Harrodsburg Road, Nicholasville Road, and around Hamburg can be nightmares. Inside the circle in the Tates Creek Rd, Richmond Rd, and even closer to town and campus are not too congested most of the time. Obviously during rush hour there is traffic in most spots. Lexington is pretty easy to navigate.
