Life After Noel

Nerlens Noel is out so which Kentucky player will rise up to salvage the season? Veteran Julius Mays? Steadying force Kyle Wiltjer? Maybe a rookie? Maybe nobody can do it.

  • Archie has to stop thinking of Archie and start thinking of this team. Nobody can fill the void left by Noel but WCS can help if and only if he starts to fullfill his potential sooner rather than later. Harrow is lost at this point only playing when he's scoring and Alex has to be a force down low now I don't know why we don't play like the Wall, Cousins team. Put Alex in the post and make him play physical thats the way this team should go forward. Goodwin may have to play point guard and let Harrow play off the ball to get more shots because teams are daring Archie to beat them because he's a terrible shooter. This team can no longer depend on Noel blocking shots they have to guard and keep guy's in front of them or they will have to play a wicked zone. Cal is going to have to shake things up more now than ever and I know its late in the year but something has to get this teams attention because if not we will be in the NIT.

  • Somebody needs to show Alex tape of Jamal Mashburn. I think their personalities are similar and he could definitely be the leader we need. Also, show Archie that being an assist leader is just as important, if not more so, as being the leading scorer.

  • Archie just doesn't care about this team or the other players. I mean watch the last handful of games and he refuses to pass the ball to Kyle and so does Harrow. I don't know why but those two struggle and they will make a bad pass to keep the ball from Kyle they are jealous because Kyle is a better player than either of them. Ever since Kyle has been playing great just watch even when Alex, WCS and Noel have position and they act as if they are covered and what do they do force a drive and make a turnover or take a bad shot. This team has a very long way to go just don't know if this team has it mainly because Archie is a ball hog and three on one and he finds a way to be even more selfish than he already is its pathetic. I can't wait till he either starts playing team ball or he leaves just that simple.

  • PASS THE BALL TO KYLE!!!!!!!!! Our guards refuse to give up the ball to our best shooter. Kyle better start shooting if we are going to keep winning.
    Heart broken for Noel.

Kyle is our best perimeter shooter and doesnt get the ball often enough and the blame is on the guards for the most part. But the offense has to bet run so he gets open looks b/c he isnt a shooter that can create his own shot like say the Curry kid at Duke. But the team has to work towards setting him up and with our guards especially Archie they just dont put an emphasis on getting him a look.at a 3. Harrow was really making progress during the semester break but has seemed to disappear from the scene. I just think if Cal would bring Archie off the bench for a short time he might just change his mind set like it did with Kyle. I would like to see Polson start and sees what happens. The bench is very thin now that Nerlens is out and WCS will start. I think WCS will step up to the challenge as the only bigman that we have now and will improve noticeably. I dont know what to say about Alex, he really has me puzzled as to why he doesnt seem to have the energy for every minute he plays and the lack of toughness when going after a rebound and holding onto the ball. this team is in a bind right now and I dont know what the future holds for the rest of the season.

  • Can't understand the concern about the team.We still have Archie(the self proclaimed "I get up for the Big games guy) and Alex. With these two "Super Stars" UK will have little trouble making the NCAA.And don't count out Harrow or Wiltjer either. With Harrows leadership and Wiltjers shooting ,the sky is the limit.

Kyle and Mays are by far the best shooters on the team and they have the ball in their hands plenty during the game. The problem is that neither is very good at creating their own shot. More often than not when they get the ball their is a guy in their chest.

That means the other guards (Harrow, Goodwin, and Polson) have to beat their man off the dribble so that when the defense reacts to that they can kick the ball to those shooters on the perimeter. Unfortunately, one of those guys can't consistently beat his man through no fault of his own, another can beat his man consistently but then doesn't know what to do with the ball once he has beat his man, and the third knows what to do with the ball and can beat his man UNTIL the defense gets physical -- then he wilts.

Due to my blue-tinted glasses, I can usually convince myself that UK can beat anybody (even during the Gillispie years). But I'm afraid this team may have a hard time winning more than half of their remaining games.

  • Interesting point about WCS, Darrell. The increased playing time and the fact that the Cats NEED Cauley-Stein to play a bigger role could certainly help his draft status. But it could just as easily hurt it. To this point, his play has been limited such that NBA guys looked at a seven-footer with athleticism and a high motor who is just starting to learn to play the game.

With greater playing time and a team that needs more from him, his limitations may be exposed.

I don't think that will be the case. He offes the kind of raw potential that makes NBA guys salivate and I would be astounded if he is not gone in the first half of the first round.

And, by the way, I hope he starts to show the development that his potential suggests over the next three weeks.
